Pretty sure he played in the match in Albany. Wont be a starter rnd1 might work his way into the team by about Anzac day. I reckon he may be a surprise debut. But don't pick him up at the start of the year in DT. lol

Promising but a long way from a certain starter. He has to get over Rusling who starts in the side at this point (if he’s fit) as well as beat Reid to the call up.

We should endeavour to sort the wheat from the chaff in regards to tall forwards this year, whether it be in the 1's or 2's we decide from, and package one of them to get another decent young ruck next trade period so we can jettison Bryan...

Well Bryan certainly has a lot to prove this year anyway. :)

Can't get that image of him scattering Swans like snooker balls while taking that diving chest mark out of my mind - in the elim final I think.

I don't know whether it's a fitness or a concentration thing but he just seems to go missing far too often.

Played in Albany and went alright from all reports. Been developing nicely having missed almost all of last year due to knee reco.

A good solid year in the VFL ahead for the lad who definitely has a heap of talent.

We might have all wheat.

Good problem to have!

Tall forwards are a difficult commodity to come across... Bulldogs haven't had a decent one in years and some sides also struggle for good KP defenders so I reckon we would either experiment with how successful a 4 pronged big man forward line pans out because most sides would really have their hands full in the air then, possibly we could try to turn one into a key defender, Ben Reid looks most likely to be able to do that to me, or Thoolen, but both need a lot more strength, or one of them should command a decent price on the trade table as well at the end of the year to get a good inside mid or an experienced and capable ruck, who can assume the no 1 spot, someone like Steven King perhaps.

Buys some time for Wood to develop and allows Fraser to play second fiddle, might be a lot more valuable than a surplus of key forwards.

We should just have a main CHF (Cloke), a backup for him/understudy (Dawes), a FF (Rusling), a backup/understudy (Reid) and don't count Rocca because he isn't a long term proposition anymore really.

If Reid or Dawes usurps Rusling at FF going forward we should shop Rusling, a lot of clubs would lick their lips and buy high on him I reckon, particularly if he has an injury free and solid '08.

What we should really do is decide how good Reid and/or Dawes will be and if think that is better than Rusling then sell before the world finds that out. This is what Sheedy managed to do time and again and get great deals that helped keep Essendon up in spite of late draft picks.

No rush in giving away our quality. While I agree Rusling may be bait for the next year or three, Brown Reid and Dawes are far from proven and will need more than one season to establish themselves. Everybody is a commodity, and if for example there is a quality midfielder available, then one of our young tall forwards may be on the market. thats just the way it goes.

Your theory about dumping a player "before everybody else finds out" is a very dated theory. These days very few clubs are stupid enough to be sold lemons - Freo and Richmond two notable exceptions of course!!!

Everybody gets what they paid for, and unless there is unscrupulous withheld information a-la Jonathon Hay, generally players trade at the correct market price. So trading Rusling "before they find out" whatever that means, is a nonsense theory.

Not really, Rusling will never be that bad, he has all the tools to be successful and is on his way there already, it may not be him, it may be Reid, Dawes or Brown but it's kind of like Brisbane's ruck scenario with their surplus and there is no point having 3 blokes filling 1 spot on the field no matter how good they all are, if they can't be all in the same side may as well offload one for something you do need like they did by trading Wood and getting Johnstone for it.

It's a handy way to improve if done well... we don't care that Wood was Brisbane's 4th ruckman because he automatically becomes at least our 2nd. Same will go with another club in their key forward department.

Rusling is a tough one. It’s a ruthless game and you win flags by drafting and trading your list to be the best.

There are question marks over Rusling but lots of clubs would pay a good price for him. Are the question marks warranted?
Do we have better in the shed?

People are paid to make these assessments. Depth is great but if we end up excess tall forwards then we have a valuable trade commodity and we'd be better off taking the price. The only urgency comes if one isn’t going to be top end and we can sell before others realise. Clubs pay for potential.
