Why is Hodge rated so highly?

You are an idiot. Without Hodge, Hawthorn couldn't have won a premiership.

Why rate him so highly? Despite the fact he had busted ribs, he was the most dominant player on the only day it counted. What the hell did Tom Harley do for you that day aside from cry and pretend to be hurt?

Not entirely relevant but in 34 years of barracking for the Hawks, I rate Hodge in the top 4 in terms of sheer pleasure in watching him play alongside in no particular order Leigh Matthews, Buddy and Darren Jarman. He is an absolute natural in the way he plays which is one of many reasons I love watching Hodge. Harley is just a little more exciting to watch than grass growing

Comes down to personal preference really - having watched just as many years as "hawks to fly", for me its dipper, campbell brown and hodge. All hard nuts who put it out there every single time.

Valid point and the list could go on with Knights, Hall, Crimmins, Ayres, Buckenara and so on but I find Hodge a pure footballer that does something everytime he gets the ball. He is not an excitement machine like Buddy but I just love the way he plays. Must admit I am getting a similar deal of excitement watching Rioli play as he rarely loses a contest and always does something creative. To be able to watch Buddy, Cyril and Hodge play together for at least the next 6-8 years will be one of life's pleasures.
