Hodge is primarily in the backline because Hawthorn has a suspect defence but also because he can struggle with midfield tags and doesn't have enough endurance to spend long periods in the midfield.

OK...it's Trade Week & you're in charge down at Skilled Stadium. If the Hawks offered Hodge straight up for Harley, would you you make the deal?

Lonestar, given our history...for us to offer that trade it's pretty likely Hodgey is either dead or missing a couple of limbs.

I'm sorry, but Hodge is a megastar.
I find Harley HIGHLY overrated. But then again, I only really see him when you guys play us, so I usually see him get beaten.
Hodge can play anywhere on the ground champ.

Harley averages 5 marks in total a game... really punishing. Harley has never been good, he is the most overrated player in the competition. It is laughable that he has made AA 2 years running. He may be a good captain but so was Richie Vandenberg.
Harley is terrible under pressure, I have to admit though he was unbelievable in the prelim... but every dog has his day!
Why do you feel qualified to comment? How many Geelong games did you watch this year?

If Hodge was such a good player he would have stayed in the midfield, but because he isn't anywhere near the standards of Ablett & Judd, he had to go back in defence and play the 'loose man' role.

Your right, our forward's were crap on GF day and they are our weakest link. Crap, your forwards have been your weakest link all year. That's why you have such a spread of goal kickers to make up for their shortcomings.
To the OP your opinion on Hodge is irrelevant. He does the job that is given to him each week by the coach whether that be going forward, playing in the midfield or in defence - the problem with Harley - he is limited in his capabilities. To compare the two is laughable.

Hodge cant be traded - It's just not physically possible to get anything that is equal to Lord Hodge's value.
This is just a poor topic in general.

This thread actually made me laugh.
There is a couple of things here though that come up a bit on bigfooty.
Firstly just because a player plays in a role doesn't mean it his best position, it just means that is where the team need him. Hodge is an outstanding player. He has a great ability to win the ball at ground level and win clearances look at his final v adeliade last year for evidence of how good he can be in the middle.
Secondly just because two players get the same opponents doesn't make them comparable.
Hodge is a true footballers footballer. His attack on the ball, courage, kicking are all second to non. He simply gets the job done regardless of where or how. He plays in the backline because that is where the Hawks need him not because that's his best possie

It's so true. It's a weak competition at the moment, there are a dozen teams rebuilding (various stages - including Hawthorn) and it appears Geelong will only capitalise on 1 season. Port Adelaide and Essendon at least had stiff competition from the majority of the league when they underachieved.

Hodge led the comp for intercepted kicks when he was in the backline. Also Hodge isn't even a defender, just a defensive midfielder.
