Why is such a big deal made of the ANZAC game?

A bit of a ridiculous question when you consider there has only ever been 13 H&A crowds over 90K

Collingwood v Essendon on ANZAC have 6 of them.

There are only two 90k+ H&A crowds that didn’t occur on a public holiday

R1 2018 when 90,152 went to see Tigers v Carlton for Richmond to show their first flag in almost 40 years

R20 2000 when 91,571 went to see ESS v Carl on Friday in a 1 v 2 clash

People have some ridiculous notion that it is ANZAC Day that creates the massive event...play Coll v ESS/Carl/Rich on a public holiday early in the season and you will get 85K+

Put North v Saints on ANZAC day and you get 40-50k max. And all of a sudden it isn’t the big ‘blockbuster’ anymore.

And to be fair, I couldn’t give a shit about ‘blockbusters’ but the AFL has put commercial interests ahead of competition integrity, and the result is a fixture designed to maximise attendance and TV $$$.
You pretty much made my point for me, it is the fact it is the only game played on a public holiday that gets bums on seats. It has nothing to do with the teams playing those 30k neutrals that have nothing better to do will turn up so as long as you have 1 of Collingwood, Richmond, Essendon, Hawthorn, Carlton you can play them against a North, Dogs, Saint, Dees and you will get 80k+ everytime.

How many H/A games between Essendon and Collingwood have you got 90k outside of Anzac day?

2018, round 16 - 69,868
2017, round 16 - 63,537
2015, round 23 - 40.270
2014, round 17 - 58,996
2013, round 19 - 69,821
2012, round 23 - 56,491
2011, round 19 - 73,163
2010, round 20 - 59,277
2009, round 14 - 77,699
2008, round 17 - 64,785

They still pull a decent crowd, but the ANZAC Day element seems to result in at least an extra 20k in supporters compared to their regular game later in the season. Many variables at play.

It’s because it is an event on the AFL calendar, many neutrals attend Anzac Day game that don’t attend the return game later in the year. I know many that have gone from Perth for today’s game and all of them are looking forward to the pre match ceremony more than the game itself.
Don't tell the precious Pies and Bombers fans, It is all about them.

So why don’t Easter Monday and Queen’s Birthday pull similar crowds if it’s all about the public holiday and nothing better to do?

To be fair the AFL machine doesn’t market those games like they do Anzac Day, the Anzac Day game has become an event Day like the GF. Very commercialised and many corporate packages sold for it. Those other days are just marketed as a normal home and away game.

Easter is a 4 day weekend for most people, a chance to go away/visit family. Queens Birthday is also another long weekend, a chance to go away. I don't know about you but I have work tomorrow and I had work yesterday and if Avengers End Game wasn't sold out everywhere i'd probably be watching that.

FWIW though, last monday anzac day game 85,082 vs last queens birthday game 83,518.

Is it a big deal? Game of Thrones round got massive hype on Foxtel...

I'm not big on ANZAC day or ANZAC day footy. Too much reverence for ANZAC can have the effect of obscuring the reality of war through mytholigising. If pressed for a position I'm probably against it.

Why it's big and why the Dons and Pies have made it their own is obvious. Draws big crowds and makes the AFL and media companies money. It also gives the AFL an opportunity to "transcend" sport. Still, it does do some good by raising money for the RSL and respecting those who've had the misfortune of serving in war is a good thing.

Personally, I've had more of an issue with the broadening of ANZAC day to ANZAC round. That has seemed even more opportunistic.

I am sure the mods who gave you a day off to think about the way you act would be happy to hear it.
I noticed you didn't put the posts up that i was quoting, is that because you know i was right?

The mods gave me the day off because i what i said to you, not because they didn't believe it.

I just hope you invite us all to your wedding. Now piss off.

Good for you, i bet there are many who would also say that, but who cares, we will still pull a massive crowd.
This.

There's going to be 100,000 people at the G in a little over two hours, not one of whom will give a **** what the other 16 clubs are thinking. Watch it, don't watch it, who cares.

Great Post que gopies to come in with useless facts and figures about the Pies drawing power.....including Roy Morgan figures.

Pies and Bombers fans harping on how great they are at drawing a crowd, you get 60k to your non-anzac day games no better then a Geelong vs Hawthorn game. They and a number of other clubs could easily get the 90k crowds as well when 30k of the crowd is just there because of the day not the teams playing.

As for it being the 2nd biggest game of the year, you have half the workforce at home for a day and most of us get bored by around lunchtime looking for something to watch on TV. I could not name 1 Anzac day medalist or even who won any of them.

It’s an interesting point.
Finals are easy to remember, Grand Finals more so. Norm Smith medallist’s etc.
Yet it’s really difficult to remember an Anzac Day game. People know about Zaharakis ‘09 and the drawn game in ‘95. That to me says the game isn’t actually interesting.
Let’s compare that to Geelong v Hawthorn. So so many more games people remember.

I love watching Essendon v Collingwood on Anzac Day only because the players treat it like actual warfare and when they get interviewed afterwards they talk about how they were in the trenches with their teammates out on the field for a couple of hours.
