Why Shannon?

Back to his disgusting, hopeless usual self today sadly. Just not good enough. Laughable at times, you just knew when he got it he was going to do something incredibly stupid.

As others have said surely Djerk, Hogan or Gamble (don't give a stuff if he's a different type of player) are worth a crack over him. Just get him the #### out!

This kind of attitude from a Geelong 'supporter' really disappoints me.

We win, albeit in somewhat ugly fashion, by seven goals, so what do we do? Come up with another 'let's bag Byrnesy' thread. How original.

Yes, we all know he isn't the greatest kick in the side. But sheezus christ, who are we comparing him to here? There has to be better kicks in the team and lesser ones. Shannon would prob be the first to admit he's in the poorer half, but I think he's got other assets. Some nuffies on this board wouldn't agree.

How many blokes in our side can a teammate simply kick the ball out in front of and know with confidence their teammate will get their first? There's probly two, maybe three, blokes - Wojo, Byrnesy and Varcoe.

Speed, esp in this age of footy, is crucial.

It wasn't so long back the Cats seemed reluctant to play Varcoe and Byrnesy in the same team. Now they're doing it, and to good effect.

His work ethic - esp to get himself to where he is from a rookie list - has been huge.

Yes, that's only one thing and you have to earn your spot, but he works his butt off when he's out there both ways.

It's easy to sit in the grandstand eating a pie, and then come home and slam a bloke from your keyboard.

Honestly, people ... I urge you to have a closer look at the whole game, appreciate watching our team play and stop writing such negative sh*te before typing unGeelong-like dribble.

Sometimes I wonder if these fringe players like Shannon aren't under instruction to give the ball to Gary, Joel, Joel or jimmy etc.
Seems to me at times their hessitant to be the playmakers when they should get on with it.
This could be part of the problem why they look lost sometimes.

Great post Mate :thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:

I used to be quick to jump on shagga's back.... but some of the shit he cops around here is uncalled for.

How does a Gamble remain motivated?

He's an AFL listed player, not a 10 year old kid. I bet Shannon was told his whole life he's too short and will never make it but every time he is dropped he earns his way back by dominating the VFL. Gamble played well in a few pre season games but not so in the season proper.

Although i'm not saying we should play Shannon over Gamble. I just don't buy into the 'motivation' and 'confidence' issues when a professional footballer gets dropped or isn't playing in the seniors.

This thread is hilarious. A lot of the team under performed yesterday and you're laying into one of the usual whipping boys after yet another win. I bet half of you open the next Blake thread and defend him. God help Varcoe if he has one bad game as the knives are going to be out quicker than it takes for the final siren to blow.

Fact is Byrnes has played well in the previous two games and calling for his head after one bad game is poor. Being at the match yesterday, there were a lot of times when indecision caused us to go backwards or they tried to be too cute and turned the ball over. It wasn't just Byrnes who suffered from it. A lot of our more skillful and senior players did it too.

Exactly. Byrnes wasn't the only player who had a bad game yesterday.

As was said earlier, even if another player is a bit better, it's better for the team to reward those who put in the work - means that everyone knows what is expected.

hmmmmm.... yeh cus you can always just have a team full of gary ablett's.......

FFS did we loose a game ?????

Little Shagz is a passenger plain and simple. The last 2 games that everybody is raving about he was average meaning he didn't completely stuff up every possie he got and put his teammates under pressure. lol Just executing the basics and getting through the game without looking like an utter dill is cause for celebration among some of our supporters. :D Ridiculous doesn't even to describe it, we beat the dees in spite of the shagster. We're so good that we can play 21 against 22 and still come out the victors. Shagga been on the field had nothing to with it.

Yesterday his true colours came out again, it is inevitable with this kid. As far as I can see there's no upside to playing him again. He's not gonna get any better in fact he seems to regressing and getting worse.

Interesting to see how a three-page thread pops up within hours of a poor game... Where was the thread of praise following his good games? Oh wait I forgot that you keyboard heroes wait for him to execute a poor move just so you can pounce all over him on here.

By the way randyzany, if I were you I'd think twice before calling myself a "supporter". You're not doing much supporting now, are you?

Forgive me for demanding the very best out of the club eliiiiza. The stronger our side is the better our chances to reclaim the Premiership Cup. :thumbsu:

But I swear that I'll change my tune and claim that Shan is a highly esteemed player and in our Top 10 if another club shows serious interest in him during the trading period. :D :thumbsu:

This thread would be absolutely hilarious if it wasn't so sad.

He plays three good games, including arguably his best ever the previous week, puts in one poor one and there's "another" thread started about him and all the usual suspects come stampeding in like lemmings with their usual BS.

Why do you bother Eliiiiza, hell why do I bother come to think of it? :(

If accumulated stats mean anything at all, he kicks Varcoes' arse.
And you'all think he's great! So why bag him and not the others.

eliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiza, do you mean this thread?

Honestly, if you can't handle criticism don't read the board the week after he plays a bad game.
That was nearly three weeks ago. He played what was one of his best games for the club last week - where was it then?

Never said I couldn't handle it, I've kept my mouth shut for a while now but this is way too much.

You want a thread for every time he plays a good game? Start one if you like!

Who in GFC has not played thier best game before? so they should as AFL level players and I agree that Shannon has played couple of good games(reletively better game if you know what I mean). but my question was not about that and was not about winning or losing games as well.
MY QUESTION WAS WHY SHANNON ahead of other players who are more consistent in thier form??? That's it!!!

So far, I could hear that

1. he is a hardworker, and team play than Gamble
: hope he was not ... so he puts his team mates under pressure whenever he gets the ball? - not convincing
2. his pace is better than other players
: so his tackles have been so effective? - not convincing either (when people say that he played better today means normally he takcled more effectively) - from what I've seen his chasing has not been effective at all.

* even though these arguemnts are accepted, how would you get over his other problems?
1. poor disposals
2. goal kicking (I know all players are generally in GFC bad but he is worse than others)
3. limited foot skill
4. tackling team mates ^^;;

No-one was complaining back in late september '07.

Sitting at the MCG on sunday had be fairly disappointed. Not at the players. But at our supporters. After all the players have done for us over the past three years, we still manage to get a majority who are not happy. Maybe they will never be.

Leave the poor kid alone, he's getting himself back into the best team in a long time, consistantly. Maybe.. just maybe.. he is doing something right..

I'd probably rather Bomber Thompson do selections over most of you.

This kind of attitude

yeah?

and this is PROFESSIONAL f**en sport we're talkin about here, albeit with byrnes' name placed alongside.

this aint the under ten's down at diamo where yer give the trier harder a game in the firsts every now and then.

i CANNOT name another player who fills me with such trepidation as shanshan. he might try hard but he, as the downhill skier comment suggests, aint gonna help the team outta a pickle when the goin gets tough.

Opinions are the lifeblood of forums. Without a contest of viewpoints forums wither. Most of the criticism is for the right reasons – i.e a feeling for the club. That said, the hammering of Shannon has gone over the top.

I can't believe we still have people on this forum defending this guy. Every time he grabs the ball I cringe because I know most of the time he's going to try and get around a tackler and then causes a turn-over! He has no right foot and can't kick straight. I think bring back Djerk. The guy has shown he can play and he couldn't do any worse than this guy.

Leave him alone?? Sheesh.. this is the big league folks! No room for pretenders and try hards. You've either got it or you don't. Took the club forever to finally get rid of Kingsley and I'm hoping they don't but looks like they're taking their time in getting rid of this guy too!

As a Demon supporter I thought Shannon was Ok. He is very quick and looks like he can run a fair bit. He should have kicked a couple but heck most of the others were in the same boat.

I would seriously love to have him over at the Demons.
