Sounds good in theory, but what happens if one team has a bad run of wet games?
yeh, maybe. but the positives are that this will ensure teams dont chuck it in in the 3rd qtr when getting flogged - try to minimise percentage loss whenever in a losing situation.

Calling it a wildcard weekend doesn't deflect from the fact that you're actually creating a ten team finals series.

50% of teams making finals should be the max and 8/18 is a nice ratio. Even 8/16 always felt a bit high, though the financial reasons were obvious. It'll be the same when we inevitably move to 10/20.

8/20 would be better. No increases.

The fact that its 18 teams is a lot.

8 teams make finals, 10 teams dont. Its gonna be common for teams to spend 6-8 years in a row outside the top 8.

Pass. Effectively its a top 10 redesigned finals system disguised as an American buzzword "wildcard round". Mind you it makes sense over there due to the conference system.

Over here it's just idiocy. 10/18 teams shouldn't make finals. Cheapens the whole thing.

In the nfl, even with the wild card system you only see 14/32 teams play play-offs (this used to be just 12/32).

10/18 is far too many teams. No thank you.

NFL has a horrible play off system.

NBA playoffs is system is better but still flawed. Top 8.

1st vs 8th ,
2nd vs 7th,
3rd vs 6th,
4th vs 5th

A top 8 with 15 teams in the eastern conference and Western conference.

So.... 7 teams in each conference miss out on finals. Strangely there has been sides that have spent 10-15 years in a row not making playoffs

Had we had a Wildcard weekend, this week would've seen

GWS (7th) vs Adelaide Crows (10th) - Giants Stadium
Sydney Swans (8th) vs Western Bulldogs (9th) - SCG

Two matches in Sydney with the top 6 getting a week off. What are your thoughts on a wildcard weekend? Personally I'm not a fan of it.
Hell no, making the finals should mean something. AFL is a professional sport and it would be farcical if teams in the bottom half could make finals.

What's next, participation medals?

The AFL should grant a wildcard to the team outside finals who they think has the best case to be there, then let them choose one opponent in the bottom half of the top 8 for a challenge match. If they win, they take 8th spot and replace the team they beat in the finals.

This year the obvious team to give the wildcard to is Adelaide and their challenge is clearly going to be against Sydney. Who doesn't want to see that game played this week?

That would create an appropriate sense of drama and interest without just being a 10 team finals.

The downside would be that last year Carlton probably get the wildcard which detracts from the excitement of the loss to Collingwood etc. But even then, heartbreak + another hope = interest and something to keep things ticking along as a standalone game while everyone else gets a rest.

No, having a top 8 is enough without recognizing 9th and 10th also.

Just seems like a pointless additional 2 more games.

Its all about the $$$$

Whilst I don't hate extra footy, the idea is stupid and rewards mediocrity and dishonesty. Tough if you don't make it. 2017 and 2020 hurts like hell because we didn't make it but it's supposed to hurt like hell to make you get better.

State of Origin weekend is a way better idea. Gets eyes on the future of the competition.
