I'd be absolutely shocked & gobsmacked to see him leave, truth is it's all speculation and no one knows, but it's more likely he stays than goes.

When an interstate player tells their rebuilding club that they're putting off re-signing, and then they buy a home in their home state?

That could mean nothing, sure. Not sure I'd be gobsmacked if it doesn't, though.

If nothing else, the putting off of contract talks would open the door for a rival club to have a real crack. I remember we dropped the ball with lever by not locking him away and it allowed the dees to offer well over what we were prepared to and we lost him. If our 1st is a teens pick, i'd be handing it over for will if he wants out back to Adelaide AND he has shown this year his body is right and he has played well as a midfielder

It could mean far too many things.

I’d be gobsmacked if it did because of how close he is with the group and how happy he is, it’s not like he hasn’t got friends family etc all in Melbourne, he has ties with the club family wise.

he has ties with the club family wise.

To be fair, Robert Day played for ten years with West Adelaide, played 12 games for SA and is still a board member in his 70s.

He played 38 games for Hawthorn.

The Days (Robert and Ian) are remembered as greats of SA footy. I think the two years in the VFL would have been an interesting footnote to his career, if it wasn't for the curious coincidence of his grandson getting drafted.

Not sure exactly but he’d have family in Melbourne, and most of his friends he’s made and likely speaks to often are in Melbourne.

Obviously he has family and friends in SA too but I just don’t see a “home sick” or anything like that from him, the buying of a house makes sense financially, and putting off his contract makes sense because he’d be getting significantly less if he signed up for us at the start of the year and not mid way or end of year.

His family & close friends live in Adelaide.

He played 38 games for Hawthorn including the 1971 premiership.

Will Day should take into account that Adelaide had an opportunity to draft him in 2019 but snubbed him for some non-entity.

lol mcasey was said to be the best kpp.in the draft.
And if they hadnt have taken Mcasey they would’ve taken Kossie Pickett.. not Will Day.

What a complete balls up that was from the dicks running the club at the time..

As far as Will is concerned.. I doubt he’d give 2 shits that Adelaide didnt pick him with pick 6 in 2019..

The only reason Will wont stay at the Hawks is because he wants to come home to be around friends and family..

Money wont factor as both the hawks and the crows have oodles of cap space..

crows have oodles of space already and then will have sloanes $800k a season contract, seedsmans $600k a season and mcaseys contract (which is said to be overly generous) all coming off their books at season end..

So.. unless the hawks try lowball him for some reason.. or the crows just offer him something way over the top that the hawks simply cant justify matching.. it will come down to where Will wishes to live for the next three or so years.

Very early spitballing here. just saw Max Laughton's season ladder prediction that had Adelaide finishing with pick 7 (12th place finish)

Gut feel is pick 7 on its own is too much should there be a chance for Day to return to Adelaide unless he has a massive season. Would feel like he is a lower teens pick in the first round so maybe pick 7 with a 2nd or F2 coming back is about the mark?

What's Doedee up to? 😉

Bit early to argue value but right now he probably sits where you have him, loads of potential but been a HB thus far so value remains around his draft position. If he gets an uninterrupted run at as a tall mid though... It's all potential at this stage so to early to get into it 😉.

I've said this on the Crows board as well - if Day shows growth and development as a mid this year, as well as glimpses of potential stardom, then I'd offer him really big bucks

Of course, Day might not have a bar of it and want to stay at the Hawks no matter what, but it's worth a try. If he works out in the midfield, Day is exactly the player we lack. Being from SA could be a help, too (see: Rankine choosing a lesser offer from the Crows over the Bombers)

Doedee is a free agent.
Restricted FA... but yes, unlikely we would match & accept compensation if he chose to leave... & not likely to be used in any trade for Day.... but in theory any compo pick may be used.

We can match a bid so a trade it would be if that happened
Doubt we would though.

If the Hawks were genuinely interested in Doedee & he wanted to go there, then the Hawks may be able to ensure his contract is structured to allow for favourable FA compo that is used as part of any Day trade.
