Just wondering what you Dees thought about the idea of media superstar Garry Lyon coming back home to coach Melbourne now that Daniher's goose appears cooked.

He's seems to think he knows a lot about football. Surely in his mind he is the perfect candidate for the job.

Would you want this former Dees great as your next coach?

They have 10 rounds to find someone. Apparently, according to "The Back Page" segment on SEN "The Age" leading story tomorrow is that Neale Daniher's about to fall on his sword at the end of the year by mutual agreeemenrt.

I'm truly surprised at the negative response.

Gazza is a legend at Melbourne and seems to think he knows footy better than most as he is more than willing to sink the boot into all and sundry.

Surely now's the time for him to put up or shut up and lodge his application to coach his beloved Dees?

If he doesn't get the job now, I'd vouch he'll never coach at the senior level and where would that leave his credibility as far as criticising others?

Come on Gazza...

Many teams have fallen to that line of thought - just because he was a champion player for the club doesn't mean he is capable of coaching the club. Anyway, he sucks up to Eddie too much. Better off down at Collingwood.

Stupid thread, Gary has made it clear the only team he wants to coach is the Camberwell under 12's. The pressure of coaching isn't something he is interested in.

And since when did you need to have coached to be able to criticise others, you don't even need to have played the game, if you have a solid argument and have the ability to express it you can be a very good commentator.

Ridiculous thread.

If Garry Lyon wanted to coach an AFL club, he would have gathered some experienced since he retired in 1999. Instead, he chose not to. Now he is a top media personality on good money, building his profile up and making a good career for himself.

David Schwarz was a club champion who is also in the media, but no one ever mentions him as a coach. So why suggest Lyon for?

Why would he take a massive pay cut to coach Melbourne.

He struggled to get the All-Australian team to win the Interantional Rules games, how is he going to go with a struggling list.

Nah, a champion player doesn't make a champion/good coach, which also scares me about Voss.

Arghhh what's with the Connolly and Lyon drumming?? They were good MFC players but they have moved on; Connolly still Coaching Freo & Lyon kissing Eddie's A**, also he tried at coaching the international side and failed miserably.. We want someone without a history at the club; new, fresh & young not old cobwebs coming back. Michael Voss, O'Donnell, Longmire will do

Garry Lyon: I am out of touch

29 June 2007 Herald-Sun

MELBOURNE great Garry Lyon is out of the race to replace Neale Daniher, admitting he's been away from cutting-edge AFL tactics for too long.

Lyon said last night it would be unfair on any playing group to learn in a hurry on the job.
"I think I've been out of footy too long to contemplate it," Lyon told the Herald Sun.
"The longer you're out if it, the harder it is to get back in. I don't think I've got enough experience or qualifications."
Lyon's admission comes despite his taste of senior coaching as boss of Australia's international rules team in 2003-04.
The former Melbourne skipper, who retired in 1999, said the new Dees coach owed it to his players to be "100 per cent up to speed" entering the job.
"It wouldn't be fair to the group if you were having to learn very much on the job," Lyon said. "I'm not a candidate at all. I've never said I was in and Melbourne have never said they were going to talk to me."
