Modern Classic Endures Off-Season Mess Around
West Coast Eagles

Away, 2012

Puma

8/10

Lions132.jpg

Like they’ve been doing throughout their quarter-century of existence, the West Coast Eagles have again spent this off-season finicking with an instantly recognisable jumper. Yet despite the minor changes that never fail to periodically occur, this is still basically the same garb worn in three successful grand final campaigns. Triumphant connotations notwithstanding, it’s a striking kit which probably deserves more exposure—the royal blue design has rarely made an official appearance within the WA border during the last fifteen years.

Relegated to away matches again in 2012, in one regard the colour scheme and wing design contradicts the branding of the West Coast Eagles, especially since everything else about the club hints that navy is their blue of choice. On the other hand, it could be considered as the one saving grace of the Eagles’ on-field apparel—supporters seem to like it more so than the home and clash options, and keeping the jumper around in a secondary capacity at least shows some effort to appease them. Some of the modifications for this year’s version, however, may not be met so warmly.

The streamlined Eagle head has been reduced to little more than a beak and a triangular eye, the yellow wings seem to be getting slimmer each year, and neither the SGIO logo or newly acquired Bank of Western Australian label seem quite right. There’s merit in suggesting the stylised Bankwest oblong looks odd purely because it has replaced the familiar logo of long-time sponsor Hungry Jack’s, but the SGIO lettering on the back can receive no such exemption—placed inside a clunky, oversized white box, the tip of the wing design has been needlessly cut short. More frustrating than its awkward appearance is that the obvious solution to this problem has been inconceivably overlooked. That is, the design would benefit from having the logo placed inside a neat, white oval in the same vein as the Eagles’ home jumper.

For all the questionable changes made, there seems to be just as many modifications that feel right. The white outline on the wings has been ditched. Likewise, the border around the bird head has been traded for the thicker, more harmonious navy blue outline which, over time, may make up for the strange decision to slice up the Eagle image. With that said, none of the adapted details truly make or break the jumper. Rather it is the gleaming palette that still beguiles the eye from afar and the prominent symbolism that demands attention. From then on, as spectators hone in for a closer look, they may feel a little underwhelmed by the execution of some elements, but not detrimentally so. After all, this is a special kind of football jumper, and Hungry Jack’s is shit anyway.

That's the royal jumper I've got at home. I rather that template then the one we have now.

Without going through the 228 pages of this thread - what is the preferred versions of the jumpers/guernseys? (i.e. eagle logo on front, etc.)

Majority want royal home gold away with current eagle head. However if navy home is needed then we are happy to compromise to get what we want later down the track. Returning the wings is goal number 1.

Wasn't the royal blue used as the away previously to ensure it was used for Grand Finals? Or was that just urban myth?

Think that's a myth considering we were the home team in one of the 05/06 grand finals. We wore it more for traditions sake.

Correct, that's the answer Gary gave us. He said that we played away in '05 even when we were the "home" team thus we wore the wings.

This however bugs me because the home fans should get to see the players in the premiership jumper. They obviously know the importance of that jumper to the fans, yet won't make it the home and dominant jumper.

As time goes on, I am becoming less finicky with how the wings look. I think getting them back and ousting the tripanel and clash is good enough... for now.

I'd like them a big bigger and maybe sgio can piss off with the stupidly big box on the back of the away and make it an oval like it is on the home jumper. But besides that I like them the way they are.

I think whoever plays in the Friday night prelim final is considered the home team for the GF. In both cases that was Sydney.

(I could be wrong)

With 3 jumpers (navy royal gold) there's no reason we can't just have them on rotation. Each jumper gets worn 7 or 8 times per season, regardless of home or away. Easy.
