Women's football licences to be announced today- who gets in???

Holy shit. You'd rather women that want to play football not have a pathway to help them do that, so that YOU can enjoy watching them in other sports.

If they want to play football they can. Nobody is stopping them. In fact have at it. Enjoy the game.

I don't however care if there's no pathway for them in football, just as much as I don't care there's no pathway for men in netball to end up being paid for playing in a league.

Just because it's not there doesn't mean it needs to be.

What does that sound like when you read it back? Is this thing about people or just about consumer gratification?

It's about a sport, a product, entertainment.

Do you think when all those Carlton fans turned away from going to games/taking out memberships etc people cared about the product/the entertainment or the players feelings?

Put out a garbage product and people won't buy memberships.

Im more surprised that geelong did not get a license.

Being a regional footy hub and geelong people would get behind it imo.
Never stood a chance once Carlton got on their knees like a pornstar.

Don't argue with misogynistic idiots.
Who, Quiv?

Barking up the wrong tree, his point is valid, the Lions can't even look after a men's team. That said they were guaranteed once GC didn't nominate.

Fair call.

People profess to pine for the old, simpler days of footy of the 70s and 80s. I am too young to remember but I am almost certain that club finances were the furthest thing from the minds of the average punter back then.

And look at the shit we landed in because of the financial practices of those times and the fans ignorance to such things.

We're still not in the clear by any means. Still a long way to go before a lot of our fans feel they can trust the club fully again to run it the right way.

Interested to see how recruitment will be done.
Will they raid other sports or stick with their own states for now?

My team isn't in it yet I'll be going for another side for now.

Not sure who to go for out of Melbourne or Freo.

I'm going for Melbourne, personally (mostly because of the Viney factor)

You're calling me a nonce and you're the one who loves watching ten year olds play? Maybe you don't know what that word means.
oh i do know what it means(and i know it has more than one meaning)...cant help it if you have no street cred and dont know what im saying...

Just what Collingwood need more marketing and sponsorship opportunities.

I would have gone with non aligned clubs, but I can see why the AFL went the other way. Doing so brings greater marketing, sponsorship and more importantly profile, supporters and existing rivalries. Netball went down a similar path with their recent expansion with sides being drawn from the AFL and NRL.

Carlton, Collingwood and Richmond bring that in greater numbers than St Kilda. With Melbourne and Western Bulldogs rightly or wrongly all but guaranteed sides 2 of Carl/Coll/Rich were always going to fill the remaining Victoria spots for the above reason. I sense St Kilda knew this hence their push to increase the comp to 10 teams.

GWS - WTF? Already costing a fortune to keep them afloat.

So you don't want women's footy played in NSW?

Swans weren't interested, didn't even put a bid in. We stepped up to the plate and bid. We've been involved with the Auburn Giants Women's team since day dot (they were one of the very first teams to adopt the Giants name and colours). There's a new junior girls comp just started. My son's club, Penrith, now has a girls team. You gave the Dogs a tick for groundwork, but just a WTF for us.

But you know, typical VFL myopic small mindedness even with this new competition expanding the range of options for young girls across the country. How dare they even think about playing this sport in NSW. They don't deserve a team.

Just pathetic.

Yeah we knew the AFL was a corrupt piece of shit full of nepotism and beholden to the old boys club.

If they weren't going to create a geographic spread then they should have just gone with the 6 which was what they were advised.

But no couldn't leave Collingwood and Carlton out.

Not really. Saints deserved one before us and the Dogs are from a similar region. Carlton just shouldn't have one. Don't deserve one.

Why is that?
We were one of the first clubs to publicly throw our support behind the womens league.

Same geographical location as Collingwood, only what 3kms apart?

St.Kilda have that whole peninsula on the Eastern side of Melbourne. You've been picked as a traditional power club, albeit a quickly fading power. Fitzpatrick isn't commissioner and I doubt you get a license.

They women play pretty well. It would be good if they kind of tied it more into the AFL season, with the womens team playing before the real game. Good entertainment

Pretty sad how people are writing it off already and not going to pay much attention to it. They aren't destroying the main games, so whats the issue?

It's about developing women's footy not clubs. Obviously the AFL deemed the profile of Carlton and Collingwood to be more beneficial than the geographic difference St Kilda offers at this stage.

We also put facilities in place for a women's side during the last redevelopment of the Holden Centre; no doubt a similar build in the move back to Moorabbin will help St Kilda in the future.
