Women's football licences to be announced today- who gets in???

Because the AFL is an old boys club and would prefer Carlton and Collingwood.
I'm talking when the startup happened 3 years ago. If St Kilda are such pioneers then they would have been involved in the early games.

I'm a bit surprised they even linked each team to AFL clubs. Whilst I don't really want Melbourne's hard work going to waste I would've thought the best way to get the competition some breathing room could've been to start stand alone clubs especially outside Victoria.

I'm not sure what the end goal is for a women's AFL competition.

If there wasn't the AFL as we know it and you were merging all the mens state leagues to create a national super league you'd probably have 10-12 clubs. 4-6 in Victoria, 2 WA, 2 SA, 1 NSW, 1 QLD with Tassie and NT either as standalone options/expansion options or represented by Victorian (Tas) or SA (NT) clubs.

This women's comp seems like a bit of a copy of the highly successful women's big bash league. Which is fine. But T20 cricket is the popular short form, short series domestic version of cricket. There's still an option for women to play at an ever high standard throughout the year in the national team.

How the league transitions from it's 8 week showcase season to a full 16-22 (I'd recommend max 18) round comp will almost be a biggest test than how this competition goes.

6 games a year. Your 1st 100 game player will reach the goal in 2033.

Yeah, didn't realise the season would be so short to begin with. Someone else mentioned maybe a lower threshold to start with. But who knows, a bit of success, a growing and stronger league, more teams added - over time there will probably be a longer season.

Also father daughter - all those players who've reached the 100 game mark at the men's level, but who have only had girls - they too can now follow in dad's footsteps.;)

It's all good.

Put it this way, I'll be filthy if Daisy plays another 5 years on top of the exhibition games and she doesn't qualify

err

Do you know where Moorabbin is?

Do you know where the Trevor Barker Oval is?

You know the two ovals that the Saints have committed to as training and playing bases for many years to come.

Do you know that the Saints have been supporting the women's club development in the bayside area for many years and that this is why it is the strongest zone for female footballers in Oz?

15km S/E of the CBD

Hampton or Sandringham oval. It is named after Barker because he coached Sandy to 2 premierships before he passed away, nothing to do with the Saints.

Yeah right, just like all the other ovals the Saints have 'committed' to in the past.

Source please?

The proof will be in how many people watch it the AFL always politically correct will tell you how good it is but if you don't like it don't watch it simple .In my area of country Victoria we have had a team in the state league for a few years and when they show the "highlights " on the local news its that bad its embarrassing ive coached U12 and U14 lads that would beat them that's no exaggeration but hey with a big cash injection and proper training who knows what can be achieved .

His point is that Sandy/ Saints seconds play over the fence from Port Phillip Bay.
Whether it is St Kilda, Moorabbin or Seaford, the fact is St Kilda Football Club has had their base within a few kilometers of the bay for over 100 years and you seem to think they shouldn't have any claims to this bayside region.

Some cluba definitely see a financial benefit to it, clubs don't seem to have issues getting sponsors for their women's teams and if it can help bring fans to the game overall it's a good investment.
Also as mentioned, the AFL isn't a for profit organisation and this will be good for the game overall

You actually think a club will make money from this??

Mate it will a drain on AFL funds it won't make a dollar

Why is it so hard for men to grasp that it's not about their entertainment, but about creating a pathway for young women to live their sporting dream and showcase their talent?

Because some men cant see women as actually people. In their eyes we are only here for their pleasure.

Richmond and my husband's (WCE) team missing out means I get to pick. Which is a little scary. I am thinking Brisbane since I live in QLD.

If they want to play football they can. Nobody is stopping them. In fact have at it. Enjoy the game.

I don't however care if there's no pathway for them in football, just as much as I don't care there's no pathway for men in netball to end up being paid for playing in a league.

Just because it's not there doesn't mean it needs to be.

Doesn't mean there doesn't need to be either. Why get caught up in the notion of girl sports vs boy sports?

It's about a sport, a product, entertainment.

Do you think when all those Carlton fans turned away from going to games/taking out memberships etc people cared about the product/the entertainment or the players feelings?

Put out a garbage product and people won't buy memberships.

I'd say they turned away because they weren't competitive, weren't putting in the effort and the club made a series of horrendous blunders.

What I don't understand is the AFL are going to expand to 10+ teams in 2018 so why not start the comp out at that number?
For any team joining the comp after it has been established is going to struggle mightily as all the best talent will have already been divided between the first 8 sides.

Same geographical location as Collingwood, only what 3kms apart?

St.Kilda have that whole peninsula on the Eastern side of Melbourne. You've been picked as a traditional power club, albeit a quickly fading power. Fitzpatrick isn't commissioner and I doubt you get a license.

What a load of whinging rubbish people are coming out with.

For a start our proximity to Collingwood is used as a reason to shitcan our selection, yet it is accepted that Collingwood should have got a licence? Why not the reverse?

Carlton have the facilities ready to go, we hosted women's clinics, we got a female mascot, we added a women's football ambassador, and we got the former Equal Opportunity Commissioner, now Sex Discrimination Commissioner on to our board to drive our bid. If anything turned things our way, it was her.

Perhaps people suggesting that Fitzpatrick gave a wink and a nod to Carlton can outline anything else he has done for us to see if there is any pattern there?

May I enquire if you appreciate the purpose of professional sport?

Though being a Richmond supporter I can forgive your obvious misunderstanding!

Yawn. You've been an off-field rabble this whole century yet you're going to run a women's side. Give me a break. :tearsofjoy:

You don't deserve it, just more silver spoon treatment

Carlton and Collingwood shouldn't have got teams. They have not done anything of merit to jump on this bandwagon early. They got an opportunity due to the clout they have. It also clouds the popularity of the women's comp. If they it was all the smaller Vic clubs, then it Wold give a clearer indication of how popular the women's comp is.

Come off it. With the exception of Melbourne and the Dogs, Carlton have done as much if not more than any other club to advance this competition and the involvement of women in football.

Nothing to do with silver spoon treatment - the Pies, on the other hand...

I'm more baffled by the fact these players will be getting paid to play a very average standard of football and the rate of pay will not match their ability.

I'd say they turned away because they weren't competitive, weren't putting in the effort and the club made a series of horrendous blunders.

And the standard of football they were playing was woeful.
