Women's football licences to be announced today- who gets in???

I feel the inclusion of Collingwood and Carlton was to have a viable blockbuster game to bring in a crowd. Melbourne and the dogs were always going to be in it and including more smaller teams would've hurt the crowd figures for an inaugural season.

I like that we have a womens league now but IMO having them become a part of existing teams is a bad idea. At least have one neutral club that supporters of teams that didn't get a team can follow.

Gotta love the offended at us getting a license. How dare we strive to change for the better with embracing diversity and equality and actually put forward a good and well presented bid.

Yes because the AFL have such a great track record of basing decisions on merit rather than self interest. Why would anyone ever question their motives?

"Goodness" won the day according to Eddie.

"I don't think we need to crank it up. This is good. Goodness always wins out. We don't need to make this look like it's the AFL grand final for men in the first instance. Take the first steps ... Today we have an opportunity to offer women the chance to play what we believe to be the greatest games of all. This is going to build ... and I just think we have to hasten slowly and celebrate what it is."

Think the interesting one is SA/NT. The plan is to play half the home games in Darwin in a Row then half in Adelaide. Cant see that woŕking very well. Club has to have realistic identity.
Also us with NSW and TAS players with the latter apparently getting no home games.
I get this is about $ but it seems to me there is a real risk of people not tuning in a all. It would then become a bottomless pit for money with the AFL comitted.
nb. I do believe NT, SA and Tas should be represented but wonder if it wouldn't be better to start with a larger comp and avoid the problems. Get the beancounters probably want to start as small as possible.

Surely the opending game should be Melbourne vs Footscray they're the ones that pioneered this.

Typical Eddie making it all about promoting the 2 "big" clubs exactly why they should have been told to **** off.

Not to mention the conflict of interest of holding a professional netball licence as well, but Eddie is good about conflicts of interest the VIS are absolutely loving their home at the Holden Centre.

Story in the Age that Daisy Pearce said if she can't play for Melbourne she might not play.

Welcome to professional footy. You go were you told or don't play.
Yeah because Jeremy Howe, Adam Treloar and James Aish didn't pick their team right?

You're better than that JD. I think.
lol, better than what? :)

I'm simply saying it's reasonable that people would question the AFL's motives. There's plenty of examples where they put self-interest ahead of the interests of the game. Eddie sprouting his usual bullshit doesn't help change that perception.

As for Carlton getting a licence, I'm not critical of that. I'd prefer regional teams aligned with AFL clubs but they didn't go that way. In fact there's lots of aspects to the AFL's approach that doesn't make sense to me (but that's hardly new).

No point getting upset and jealous at the clubs who had successful bids. They just put forward a better case, that's all. Whether it be from their female viewership, general fan viewership/following, facilities, willingness to put time, effort and funds towards their woman's side or how organised they already are. Who knows. They were lucky enough and earned the right to be the foundation sides so good for them.

If you're upset/jealous that your club missed out then get upset at your club and perhaps ask the question why they failed in their bid. Eventually every side will have a woman's side. It needs to be well run, well supported and the quality needs to remain at a particular level to see the expansion.

Oh please.

Being a shill for the AFL won't convince anyone.

There's zero chance the women's league will have 18 teams any time soon in a national comp. I know it, the AFL knows it and more importantly the clubs who got licences know it.

Yeh like Melbourne, GWS and Brisbane? right?
It's completely understandable that some people would prefer to stay at the club they've been at for 3 years, and if not, then they have other things that they can pursue in life. In her case, she has an off field career that is preferable to playing at another club.

I have no idea why another club would pursue her as a marquee player, aside from the fact that she is a good footballer, she is very strongly associated with the Melbourne brand. It wouldn't make sense for her to be at another club.

If you don't like the examples of AFL players listed above, how about Chad Wingard who told GWS he would leave ASAP to return to Adelaide and consequently dropped down to Port at pick 6.
AFL players are dictating where they go more and more (and with large sums of money involved), why should the women be treated like cattle for 25k or less?

Is anyone genuinely excited about this? Do you see a future for women's football?

And are we allowed to criticize these women like we do the men?
Of course there's a future for Women's football.

Melbourne and the Dogs cant seriously have expected to keep all the best talent just because they played in the exhibition matches in those jumpers, and they shouldnt get any further a headstart because of it. All teams should start on the same terms and rules.
If all teams were starting to invest in womens football today then youd be right. But that's not the case, the Dees and Dogs have invested four years of time resources and energy into getting this to where it is today and should see some level of reward for effort. Not suggesting what that should be but both clubs have invested in developing players where other clubs are just now waking up to the opportunities. Id be very surprised if Carlton hadn't been invited to get onboard earlier, they chose not to so why should they have an easy ride to building a team?

5 more have provisional licences with the possibility of joining a year later and 5 didn't apply.

I can see the AFL like the idea of tapping into the membership and latent support in the communities of existing clubs. I'm not sure they are limiting their memberships this way as it isn't as though memberships were going to outstrip AFL clubs by having standalone teams.

Also if women in the community like the concept and there has been nothing around this big before, I don't think they are going to refuse to support it because their favourite AFL team is not in it.

I am.

I'm excited as a football fan, who gets the chance to see for-points footy during February and March right when we're all craving a fix of it.

I'm excited as a person with a sister who grew up on footy but wouldn't have been able to play beyond an amateur level, as there is now a semi-pro structure in place.

I'm excited for my best mate, whose one-year-old daughter will now grow up with a world where professional football is accessible for both men and women, and she'll have the same opportunity as any male to play AFL.

As for the criticism...well, some anachronisms are going to go by the wayside. Tackling/kicking/hitting like a girl...well, I expect that some of the ladies will hit harder than some of the blokes! But despite that, footy is footy. You can criticise a player for being soft, whether they're man, woman or part-leprechaun. I don't think the view of many of the actions on the footy field changes because the gender of the player changes. If I saw Lucy Hodge snipe Charlise Wingard into a behind post, I'd be just as outraged as the male equivalent.

This isn't about tribal allegiance ... yet.

The Dees and Dogs will get their nominated marquee players especially as those players would want to stay. They shouldn't get bonus players as a reward for holding exhibition games over the past couple of years and supporting the concept, because it is not in the best interests of a new competition to create a talent disparity from the outset and make the other clubs develop players to catch up.

The AFL will want the competition to be as even as possible initially to create a contest. In time, no doubt teams will develop talent better and faster than others and you will get that disparity as you do in the AFL but hopefully the product has caught on.

Can see Freo rising fast as it doesn't look like the AFL will compel players to move states for a pittance so only the ones that are just happy to get on a list will leave while the better players will stay home. That will be a test but with only 4 Vic teams at this stage, they have a large talent pool to call on themselves.

I was thinking about the player-moving factor, and I think there'll be more players than anyone expects nominate to be drafted to anywhere. As a 28-year-old you might have your life set up, but a 19-year-old doesn't have the same restrictions. What's more, if you aren't a top-10 talent in the state, you risk not playing at all, which will mean you may have to nominate to be drafted anywhere just to get a chance.

As for the marquees, well, all I want is to see Daisy captaining Melbourne next year. I expect that she'll be one of the two marquees by Melbourne, and the Dees have certainly committed to her.
