This tells you all you need to know. Rory hit fairways off the tee but was shithouse in approach shots and putting.

Bryson had much more even spread across all.

Not sure it tells us anything much? Anytime you lose by one shot, you will be 0.25 SG behind the winner. Rory's approach number is very close to his season avg(0.436) and his putting was well above(0.302). 0.64 SG: putting is well inside the Top 10 of rankings. Bryson's putting was ridiculous.

It says exactly what my eye test saw;
  • Elite driving
  • Poor approach play - and remember Rory is hitting his approaches from a better spot than anyone else in the field. He is just not sharp enough with his wedges.
  • Elite short game
  • Putting not sharp enough

golf is a game of halving your losses. Especially in the US Open

The narrative will be that Rory choked, but Bryson 100% won this.
I think its a bit of both to be honest, Bryson earned that 3 shot lead by playing good US OPEN golf and deserved the victory but goodness gracious me, the two 3 footers that Rory missed that didn't have much break in them was unbelievable, I know the greens are quick in US OPENS but like it or not Rory choked and gave Bryson the opportunity that he needed and Bryson sealed the deal with THAT bunker shot under so much pressure, a picture tells a thousand words and footage of Rory watching Bryson's bunker shot and final putt said it all, I could be wrong here but 10 years ago the old Rory wouldn't have missed those putts.

Tells you everything as a direct comparison between those in contention.

Rory was elite off the tee but was much lower hitting into greens and putting compared to Bryson.

Just shows you Bryson brought a pretty complete game to the event. Very deserving winner.

Rory wouldn't miss those putts in a normal PGA event.

BUT Last 3 holes on the final days of a Major whilst leading? After not winning one for 10+ years?

Shows you how much of a mental game golf is. Rory has BIG demons in his head in majors now.

You used shithouse to describe Rory's approaches and putting. 0.64 and 0.41 are very solid numbers. He lost by one FFS.

What a choke by Rory. Jesus. Hot and then misses two short putts in the last three holes. Infuriating. Bryson's bunker shot trying to win the US Open is special though. Amazing.

as a parallel to Bryson, he was shithouse in those 2 areas.

Bryson was shithouse at hitting fairways in comparison to Rory.

Riiiight, so now it's relative? Anytime an SG number is in the positive, I would say it is by definition, not shithouse.

i dont care what your definition is?

it was always relative. have your own opinion.

Dunno why your jumping down others throats

That's the point of BF innit?

Edit: sorry, didn't see the jumping down throat comment. Not sure that applies to a post which was(respectfully, I believe) disagreeing with your interpretation of SG numbers?

I was comparing a stark difference between rory and bryson in key stats in the tournament. Rory was terrible (yes shithouse) in comparison in approach shots and putting compared to Bryson. Where was Bryson was terrible in fairways found compared to rory.

if you disagree good? I dont care? Stop quoting me saying things like "riiiiiiiiiiight".

Over a 4 round tournament, those Strokes Gained differences are tiny. Using words like "terrible" and "shithouse" is plain silly. So yes, I disagree.

Try telling that to any casual fan, having seen BDC driving bombs his whole career.
The improvement Bryson has made is incredible in the approach/close shots.
What’s even more insightful is watching him on YouTube and actually commentating on what he’s looking for, how he’s doing it as well as what swings he will take.
His putting is as better as his driving lately.
Don’t think should be attributed to ‘LIV Golf’. He has actually put in a lot of work over the years whereas DJ and Koepka has stagnated

LIV has just him more time to do it properly, putting out the content he does on a PGA schedule would be very hard.

That putt on16 that missed left. Have a look at his feet, he was aiming right where he hit it.

Even 18, his feet are way open.

What is everyones opinion on Pinehurst? Created great drama. Certainly has an aura about the place. I thought it wasn't as penalising tee-to-green as I thought it would be. Unless a ball go stuck behind the shrubs, more often than not a player would still have a relatively open shot at the green. I would have liked to have seen wayward drives punished more severely.

Obviously the greens are ridiculously penalising.
