Choking is a nasty word. It may have have happened today, it certainly happened to Van de velde and Norman- but only in 96. In most of his close losses, shark was completely snakebit. Mize, Tway, Zinger all spanked him with massive bombs

Didn’t he put it in the grandstand at the masters on the eighteenth hole from the middle of the fairway when a chance to either win or get in a playoff iirc

Its a tough watch this

It will be interesting to see how he bounces back at the Open. Travelers Championships first up this weekend.

Rumour was he's withdrawing from the travellers

Rory’s career absolutely eclipses Greg’s. Faldo a better comparison

2 more majors is it. And yes that counts for sure and counts the most. But hardly eclipsed. Rory is still over 55 world wide wins away from Norman. Rory also has not been number 1 for a long period like Norman.
Both will end up HOF and that’s where they will both belong.
Who is the better Golfer, even I would say Rory, but not much in it as of today.

We have been through this before. Greg’s world wide wins include crap tournaments. And the OWGR was a load of shit invented by his management company.

Which tournaments are crap tournaments? And now you’re saying the world rankings were wrong? Oh cmon man yiu are now just taking the piss

Feels like a bit of a flat year for Aussie golf in terms of success. Nobody has really fired a shot in the majors, Jason Day the only guy in the top 50 or so on the US tour, no individual wins for the lads on LIV and absolutely nothing doing in Europe or on the Korn Ferry.

Just a flat year? Nothing to worry about?

The Traralgon Classic is a standout - along with a lot of Skins and other exhibition type events which are included in his "international victories". Not to mention the Aussie state Opens and PGA events. They didn't hold a candle to a Euro or PGAT field.

As for the rankings, Greg held it for the famed 331 weeks. Let's take the 89-90 period. Faldo goes back to back at Augusta, wins an Open, was the Euro Tour player of the year both years as well as PGA player of the year in 1990. During those years, Greg won no majors and had 3 wins on the PGA Tour - yet he somehow held onto the #1 ranking until Sept 1990 then snagged in back in October - presumably due to the weight put on PGA Tour victories as well as racking up a few wins on the Aussie tour and elsewhere. And doing lots of contending without winning.

Who do you reckon was the best player in the world over those years? To make this clear, in 1990, Faldo was voted by his peers as best player on the PGA Tour and by journos on the Euro Tour as the best player on that tour. So were they wrong or was the ranking system a bit NQR?

Rory's career eclipses Normans in majors, PGA Tour wins and Euro Tour wins. It's not even a discussion.

There might be a bit to worry about. Adam Scott is clearly in decline. Has been given sponsors' exemptions into most of the signature events but it still only lingering about.

Min Woo and Cam Davis might find themselves locked out of those events next year if they don't get a wriggle on. Min Woo especially doesn't seem to have come on this year like he/we would have been expecting. That being said, he could easily turn things around.

Doesn't seem to be many others coming through? The new structure makes it bloody hard for the lesser lights to break into the big events. Take this current three week stretch. If you weren't in the Signature events and didn't make the US Open, you have three weeks off. That is pretty ordinary at the peak of the golf season.

The Aussie opens and masters stack up no problem. State opens agree 100%
As for your question re Faldo in 1990? I got no idea why he was not ranked the highest? Maybe he was well back in the rankings? Maybe the rankings were as dodgy as they currently are?
Mcilroy goes and bullies the Europe tour 3-4 times per year. Good for him.

So we agree the OWGR likely isn't a great indicator of career achievement?

As for Rory bullying the Euro Tour 3-4 times a year? He has only won 2 tournaments in the last 8 years against Euro Tour fields. You'll need to do better than that.

More worryingly who on earth is coming through in the next generation? Not seeing much in the way of standout young players. We hardly have anyone young on the DP World Tour for instance.

Although in the complete absence of a local tour it's probably hard to get a line.

Yes. The Aussie Tour really missed the boat by not jumping into bed with the Euro Tour. Like South Africa did.

No we agree the rankings system might not be what it should be, yiu only have to look at the mess we have today where it is so far from correct you could call it corrupt.

And speaking of the Aussie Tour, still no news on the Australian Open. Due to start in a bit over 5 months and it's still

Venue to be announced soon....
From what i've read on social media it's got a lot to do with them hosting men, women and all abilities in the one tournament.

Most ridiculous and avoidable problem ffs. Men and women deserve to play their own national opens, combining them cheapens the tournament for everyone involved.

Couldn’t agree more, just makes the whole tournament a joke.
Separate them and let them shine in their own.

Can't remember if it was Mark Allen or someone else saying that Golf Australia would be happy to split out the tournaments, but the ISPS Handa sponsorship money is contingent upon them all playing together? The whole thing sounds like a basket case.

I don’t think anyone will come close to choking as Greg Norman .

Shit I forgot about that French bloke at the open
Adam Scott had a lead big enough to win the Melbourne Cup early in the last round in 2012 in the Open Championship, I know because I was on him for four figures, then he comes out several months later and wins the Masters, golf is a funny game!
