Can anyone top the Umpires votes from Richmond vs Brisbane game this year:
3 votes Black 16 possies (6 kicks 10 h/b) 1 mark 4 tackles 1 clearance
2 votes Patfull 12 possies (11 kicks 1 h/b) 8 marks 3 tackles 3 goals
1 vote Tambling 10 possies (8 kicks 2 h/b) 4 marks 3 tackles 2 goals

Now I realise this game was a very poor game but there were some players that did more than enough to warrant votes ahead of these 3 players:

Lappin - 28 possies (18 kick 10h/b) 5 marks 5 tackles 7 clearances
Drummond - 30 possies (25 kicks 5 h/b) 13 marks 23 rebound 50's
Notting - 27 possies (19 kicks 8 h/b) 13 marks 4 tackles 3 clearances
Foley - 26 possies (12 kicks 14 h/b) 5 marks 6 tackles 3 clearance 8 contested possies
K.Johnson - 22 possies (16 kicks 6 h/b) 11 marks 7 tackles 5 clearances
only way i can explain that is that the players were total c***s to the umpires that day and they picked out the only 3 guys that didn't gob off

Reckon I found the bloke hardest done by in Browlow Medal history Barry Mitchell: http://stats.rleague.com/afl/stats/players/B/Barry_Mitchell.html

How a bloke can get 40+ disposals in 3 games and not get 1 vote in any of them is beyond me. Let alone another few games where he had 35+ and didn't poll.

The reverse aswell. Hird's game against The Eagles in 2004 where he picked up 34 touches, 3 goals including the match winner, and 15 touches in the last quarter. Heaps of marks and heaps of clearances and he didn't pick up one vote. Probably the best non-polling game ever.

you're not very old are you?

Is it possible umpires sometimes mistake a player for another in the heat of the game?

I think the umpires should be allowed to see stats before giving votes, just so they can maybe say, hey, that guy I thought was always in the thick of it actually didn't get so much of it.

Journos see stats before giving their votes, why not umpires?

Hell yeah

Even as this yrs count was read out last night i was looking at Peter Burgoyne's votes....i swear the umps musta been mistaking him for Shaun in a cpl of games. Shaun seemed to be racking up votes when i can recall him doing sweet FA...but Peter was in great form earlier in the yr.

I reckon a lot of umps go by the number of times they see a players number. If you're running away from the ump you;re always in with a chance at some pts. Its why KP fwds and backmen dont poll so well i reckon :D

Every year we hear the same complaints. How did this player get a vote? Why didn't that player get a vote? The umpires don't know what they're doing, etc, etc.

None of that matters. It is an UMPIRES' award. They can give their votes to anyone they wish. Every year I complain about the same thing ... Why do we attach such prestige to an umpires' award? It's ridiculous.

I think you have to factor in players mouthin off at the umpire or bitching about every little decision.

Even if you play the game of your life if your being a idiot to the umpire you not going to be getting the votes because of your attitude.

i.e its the fairest and best not just the best.

This is the problem with the precious little umps, power goes straight to their big heads

Not taking the ump's side but they do not have access to stats when they are making their decision. Someone like Black who only had 16 touches, the umps may have felt like he had a greater influence than the stats show.

Anyway until we start seeing full backs/forwards polling votes it's just a midfielders award...

Spot on. The North vs Port game, round 3. Peter Burgoyne absolutely killed us, 28 disposals, 2 goals. Burgoyne similar stats (27 d, 2g) 3 votes S. Burgoyne, P. Burgoyne nothing. WTF:confused:

Libba, R2 1997 v Sydney, 2 votes

2 kicks, 1 mark, 1 handpass

:eek::eek::eek:

No wonder he won a Brownlow.

The infamous game in which Libba blanketed Paul Kelly, who refused to shake his hand after the match. Libba not only took Kelly out of the game, but kicked two late goals to put the Dogs in front and secure an unikely win. Having been there to see it, Libba didn't have a lot of stats, but he sure had more than three!

Paul Hasleby vs Kangaroos round 8, 2006.

7 disposals, including 0 in the final term. 2 votes.

Laughable.

In the early 90's I ran a DT comp similar to the current one with some mates and I can remember:
P. Matera - 3 votes for 12 possies and no goals (I think) Umps loved him.
A. Fletcher - 44 possies and no votes - dominated the game.

In Round 8 there were some suspect votes given, Bassett got the 3 for Adelaide with 14 possies and a goal, Griffin got 1 with 10 possies and 2 goals and in the Sydney Port Adelaide game Buchanan got 3 for 15 possessions and 1 goal and Pearce got 2 for 11 possies and a goal.
