Worst Personal Injury

I was watching the skeleton during the winter olympics one year and decided to take my skateboard to the top of the cul-de-sac and pretend I was one of them. I didn't know how to stop and faceplanted a kerb while doing about 30kph. Broken jaw, concussion, severe grazing on my face, arms and chest (I wasn't wearing a shirt :p) & fractured nose :thumbsu:

Worst footy injury so far was a torn calf last year.

Stunted growth during my infant years, meant I never was that 6'6" monster that my mind always tells me I'm meant to be.

Seriously though, broken bone in foot followed by severe hamstring strain, combined put an end to my more serious basketball days.
Yeh, when I was younger I got a sore wrist playing tennis. That pretty much ruined my chances of becoming #1 in the world.

Begs the question really.. can you play footy without getting injured? Seems quite inevitable.

Can anyone think of an AFL player who's racked up at least say 150 games without having had a serious injury? Even a concussion is something I would consider quite serious.

Brett Deledio comes to mind

No serious injuries. Elbow to the face last year, needed 4 stitches under the eye, too bad it was before the formal and not after.

Collapsed disc in my spinal cord from a preseason game getting crunched after taking a grab sliding on the ground. Havent been able to play sport ever since. Done ACL and that but the back is the worst thing u can do, affects everything in your daily life. Pretty much every day get tingles through the hamstrings, if u run for 10mins your left foot goes completely numb. Hurts just doing the dishes.

Have had both knees reconstructed from nearly identical injuries on opposite knees (ACL, MCL & Meniscus), injured the second one 6 months after coming back from the first one. Still have some meniscus problems that I need a scope to clean out...
Other than that, broken hand, broken collarbone, shin splints and a whole lot of muscle tears and strains.

I can still make it to the pros... right?

Not aloud to play Football anymore, not big enough and would struggle with my back and shoulder so only doing Fencing (Foil Blade)

2 x Broken Ribs (Fencing)
2 x Stress fractures to vertebra in back and one to a disk (Combination of Fencing, Football and Tennis)
1 x Broken Jaw (Football)
1 x Fractured Kneecap (Fencing)
1 x Torn Infraspinatus Muscle in Shoulder (Fencing)
1 x Heavily Stretched Labrum (Can't hold shoulder socket in place any more, currently in physio getting it fixed) (Fencing)
2 x Torn Hamstring (Fencing)
1 x Torn Quad (Fencing)
2 x Broken Finger (Fencing)

Full tear of my MCL and partial tear of my ACL... in an air-guitar injury.

RAH didn't help me much and 3 or 4 years later, I can walk and run decently enough, but with pain. When the weather is cold, it's a bad time. Or if I leave it straight without moving for over 20 minutes.

But it was fun seeing "Air Guitar Injury" on my medical report.

Not sure what the prize is for worst personal injury but I've had guys almost vomit as I tell the story...

As an old ruck I prided myself on my hardness and ability to withstand pain. I played I the 80's and 90's when there was no circle or rules limiting how ruckmen jumped and whether they dug knees and legs into each other. At times it was brutal and you always knew against some blokes you were in for a tough afternoon.

Well one bloke dug the knee in (it actually wasn't in the ruck but behind play) into my groin. I went down like a sack of spuds and nothing could get me up. Eventually I was dragged over the boundary line and our trainer gave me an ice pack to put down my shorts. Down it went and I can tell you I was in a hell of a lot of pain. Was seeing stars. After a few minutes I pulled the ice pack out and it was covered in blood!! Blood wouldn't stop flowing for some time.

To cut a long story short, the prick split my prick!

I won't go into further detail but to this day if I come across tht arseh*le on the street, I will deck him without saying a word. I do not condone violence and have not thrown a punch in anger since my teens. But I will deck him!

Oh and my ole fella is fine. Thanks for your concern. I was actually quite a hit with the ladies after that as my teammates would tell the story for many years.

Cheers

Wow fencing sounds hardcore

I was suspended for a week and my job for the game I missed was to prepare the oranges at half time. I cut my index finger doing it, it got infected and I missed 6 more games.

2008...still cringe when I drive past the ground. I had a pretty good run though, only the usual shoulder injuries and concussions up to then. I was 30 so something was telling me to stop. Glad I did as all the other smaller injuries (like the shoulders) give me more hassle when trying to sleep etc. I played to a high level for a while so it took its toll!
That's why players get my utmost respect, they will pay for their moments of glory and deserve to enjoy them.

I hear you. my hip gives me a lot of trouble with sleeping. I can't lie on my left side for more than about 2 minutes...

Ha ha, everybody's a comedian.

Let me spell it out for you then. It was a timing thing rather than severity.

It was bad tear took some 6 months before I could do light running without pain, that was straight after a similar period with the broken bone in the foot. At the time I had just cracked the team in the starting 10 in 'pre-season' practice games for the local SBL team I was training with. I was never going to be a star, that's as high as I was ever going to get, but still, l missed the season and the try-outs the following season and was too lazy/lacked motivation to go again. Just played social stuff from then on.

In terms of severity I've been relatively lucky, many minor things. Strains (especially in the ankles), a few dislocated fingers, a fractured bone in my thumb which took a while to heal but didn't impact me too much. Probably the worse was a a relatively minor, but still no fun, fractured patella done when a cricket ball hit me right on the cap as I was one knee down to take it behind the wicket, the way I had put knee down had exposed it from the top of the pad and bamb.

I'm obviously either very soft or very lucky. Broken finger, subluxated jaw and bleeding voice box after copping an elbow, torn calf and a couple of nasty corkies pretty much sums up my injury catalogue. Some of the posts here read like the next installment of Saw.

Having surgery at the end of the year for a ruptured ACL and destroyed Meniscus.

I can walk right now, which is good. The day to day acts are okay, just no pivots and quick turns and twists. Sometimes it pulls up sore, but I'm only 23 and never remember my knee being this way.

Happened playing soccer actually, my leg got caught between one persons legs and he kind of ran in a different direction quickly with acceleration and my leg was pulled out of place from everywhere. Swelled to the size of a grapefruit straight away and somehow managed to walk because I just thought I had a jarred knee.

Once I found out it was an ACL and meniscus tear I was in more pain than I thought, and less invincible too.

My mind plays tricks on me, I'll always be wary of sport now. I probably stick to tennis and drop contact sport like Soccer and AFL. The risk outweighs the reward for me.

The thing is, this thread will attract a disproportionate amount of posters with horror stories.
