Where the **** is Cartwright coming from?

He was Bradman young cricketer of the year and averages 45 in FC cricket.

Has a fantastic technique, could very well be a mainstay #5 or #6 for a long time in the test team. Especially considering the majority of his cricket will be in Australia, and over half of his away tours will be in England and South Africa.

Looked way more settled than Renshaws first outing and his technique reminded me a lot of Brad Haddin (who had a fantastic technique but just about the worst temperament going around). May even settle at 4, with Smith at 3 and Handscomb at 5

Surprised re your Haddin comment. A very pure ball hitter but always thought he played way too late against fast bowling. Maybe it was just me

Khaled Mahmud was worse than Mashud but granted, you need a keeper.

One of my mates went to that top end series way back when, and despite his Islamic leanings apparently Mashud got on the cans with him and was a ripping bloke

I can't remember his name, some English bowler during the low point of the 90s...not for his bowling, but his batting.

I remember this guy holding his bat like a metre in front of him and half-hiding behind it when he was facing up. Pretty much openly admitting he was scared.

Tuffers...

GO Aussies.

Dion Ebrahim, now there's a spud.

David Bruce who played 4th grade cricket in Western Australia. Poor bastard batted at 11, never got a bowl and fielded from fine leg to fine leg. Good club man though.
I've met a few David Bruce's in my time. They're what keep club cricket afloat.

My favourite cricketers at club level are the guys that, if you're at a club long enough, you see develop from the very bottom into good players just through hard work.

When I joined my current club (I'm from Bathurst so the standard is reasonable) I went straight into first grade. We had a player who was in presidents cup, the equivalent of a development grade where you have to have 4 players under 16 and the rest are usually parents, washed up has been players or the guys just not good enough to go up.

I got chucked straight into ones (probably wasn't quite up to it at that stage but we were a bit weak) and used to face the good bowlers in the nets but when I wanted to work on something specifically I'd go into one of the others to face this pres Cup bowler who was average but could at least stand the seam up and hit the same spot over and over.

One year at a time this bloke was just slowly getting better, first to arrive at training, last to leave etc, and just put in every time he trained. Within a few years he was opening in seconds, took about 30 wickets for the year and was involved in about half a dozen last wicket stands of 50+ - a real Gillespie type.

Earned himself a spot in ones as second change bowler, took 15 or so, became first change bowler the year after, took another 15 or so, and earned a shot with the new ball a season later. Took about 25 that year, took 30 the next, earned a start in the district rep team. A year after that, he made the Mitchell Council team.

The downside is he decided to then turn his hand to leggies and he's shit - but in keeping with the narrative he's now an automatic choice to open or bat 3 when it's green and doing a bit.

They're the sort of players I absolutely love.

I'd be a bit of a David Bruce if I played club cricket.

Nah I'd be like one of those lower middle order guys in T20 who isn't really there for their batting or bowling, just filling a spot because someone spent all the salary cap on openers and strike bowlers so it becomes like AFL Dream Team getting 11 bodies. Bat at 6 or 7 maybe but often get pushed down the order because the #8 is a better late hitter, then be the 6th or 7th bowling option who gets an over here and there of dibbly dobbly medium pace.

No 11, leg spinner here. Took more catches than made runs one season.

Was a down wind opening bowler, atrocious fielder, hidden at fine leg.

You wanna No 11 batsman???

I made 3 ducks in a day.

Opened the batting in the U/16s, gone in the first over.....then made a pair in Senior Turf, all done by 4.30pm.

Faced 5 deliveries all up.

A true badge of honour.

Lol geez you blokes know how to make a man feel better about himself.

Last season I went:

0 in first grade
87 in about 15 overs in thirds
0 in first grade
31 out of 73 in thirds
2 in first grade
47 not out in thirds in about 7 overs
0 in firsts
35 and 1-12 off 8 in thirds
Finally get a game in seconds where I wanted to be:
2 in 10 overs

Without a doubt, the worst bowler I have ever seen is Trent Lawford. Also, there was a bloke who played a game for the Redbacks (debuted with Travis Head) who was a leggie, Cameron Williams aka. the bloke from Cricket superstar. He could not land one and from memory went at around 10 an over.
Lawford's debut was probably worse. It still makes me laugh now, truly atrocious bowling. I think he struggled to bowl a legal delivery that day, which is pretty hard when you're bowling about 110 ks off a short run-up.

Yes! I'm sure there have been worse spinners statistically, but Giles made a career out of bowling outside leg to right-handers. If there was a player who truly embodied the real spirit of England cricket (mediocrity, dullness, and lack of endeavour), it would have to be Giles. The period from 2005 to now is an aberration, of course.
