OK guys, here is the situation. Big Will is a free agent at the end of the season and can walk if he wants. Would you trade him and possibly get some value for him, or lose him for whatever the AFL deem fair compensation which given past history for us means getting bent over. Discuss.

If push comes to shove and he does draw genuine interest then the club would have to look to trading him to a club of his choice. We would likely get SFA for compensation from the AFL.

There's a lot to consider, such as whether a club light in the ruck department will want to overpay for him and how Will feels about his position at the club. I can't imagine him to be too happy to play the back up ruck role like the latter stages of the Eade years, and being his age and at his prime, he's going to need some sort of guarantee as to his gametime. He'll be weary of the fact that in a couple of years time Cordy/Rough might be the preferred combo and he'll be left on the outer again.

I can't see him wanting to leave though, apart from if he doesn't get a game with us.

Wouldn't be surprised if Collingwood had a look at him too. They have plenty of young rucks, but once Jolly goes (maybe this year, maybe next), Cameron Wood will be their most experienced.

Let us all have a reality check here, Minson is head and shoulders ahead of Roughead, Cordy or Campbell in terms of the No. 1 rucking position and this point in time and you would not choose to trade him. He's basically been rucking 3/4 of every game this year, with extremely consistent effort and output at the contest. Toughead and Cordy could not handle that sort of load nor provide that intense contest Will provides. If possible you would have him signed up for at least another two to three years before the end of the season.

Campbell first of all has to get on the list, then has to force one of the three talls out of the side. Given Austin's strong performances, you would think he would have the front running for a permanent list position (rookie upgrade) given the age and unreliability (due to injury) of other key defenders. Lake, Hargrave and Morris are all around the 30 to 31 year old mark, Williams has a potted history of injuries. JJ would then probably be next in line given he fills our other void, which is genuine speed across the ground and footskills.

I'm a bit lost with Jarrad Grant. A lot of patience has been shown, he just doesn't look like he can take the next step, or maybe he needs to be tried in a different position. I always get the feeling with Grant he has a problem with fitness. He's got good acceleration on the lead and is very clever when he gets the ball, but he doesn't appear to have good endurance to burn off opponents or get involved enough in the game. Whether that's because he doesn't work hard enough or just physiologically doesn't have that type of body I don't know. But something needs to change quickly or he'll be shown the door very soon. I reckon he's playing for his spot on the list for 2013 in the last 11 weeks this year. He needs to lift.

All good points Nicko, but you and some others are missing the question, If Minno chooses to leave, and he can walk if he wants, would you seek to try and trade him out and control the compensation, or lose him and wait on the AFL compensation which means we could get screwed over yet again.

Fixed that for you, Mitcha ;)

Gold Coast will be under a fair amount of pressure to perform in their third year. I think we might be able to trade Minson for a top 20 pick. Josh Fraser is not really cutting it and Will would be a good foil for Zach Smith.
