Disappointing R1 draw from the WFNL for D2 with 6 of the 7 games having a D2 team from 2023 playing a D3 team.

Anyway, trying to be positive as I'm looking forward to watching some local footy, the off season seems to have gone forever.

Nth Foots by 55 over Heights
Sunny by a horrible margin over Nth Sunny
Brookers by 85 over Tarneit
Newport by 90 over the Rams (welcome)
Albion by 80 over Albanvale
Suns by 65 over Lavo
Wvale by 70 over West.

Hoping R2 is a bit closer, might venture out to Rockbank to see where the Rams sit.

Scores show a massive gulf between teams. Could be a very long season for a couple of clubs

Never forget that Albion were too piss weak to go up to make it an even div 1.

Parkside pushed the runners up all day, and Albion had the opportunity to do the same. Got beat with last kick of a grand final, there's not much in it. But they'd rather beat North Sunshine by 300 points.

Not sure that will make much difference. People will always move towards the more successful clubs in some way and clubbies are just an extension of this. The weaker clubs need a place/division that suits them. If that means a division with 5 teams would that really matter?

In many debates about the abolishing of div 3 it was more than obvious quite a fee clubs would not exist if they were combined into div 2 and the top div 2 clubs would have 6 to 8 totally uncompetitive games.

It has happened whilst adding the RAMS a div 3 level club so next season there will be a 10 team div 1 and likely 8 team div 2 with Aussie rules getting weaker again.

The worst part is last season was one of the most even and competetive seasons accross all 3 divisions ever

23 clubs is a bloody difficult number to manage in divisions - once again a lot of this has come down to the AFL taking over the sport but offering zero leadership. The issue is largely due to a couple of clubs leaving the competition and being allowed to - the shortage of clubs in the WRFL is now affecting many many more.

There is nobody running things, it wasn't that long ago that Heidelberg decided the NFL was a dead duck and took it upon themselves to move to the EFNL - however there were officials running footy who had power and blocked it, saying you are a northern club who should play in your area and stick around as the league is rebuilt. Fast forward 15 years and the NFNL is in a very good spot, with the league and Heidelberg saved from themselves and silly short-term and self-absorbed decisions.

The WRFL now has big problems because of clubs leaving, the EFNL is ridiculously big and has spent years trying to poach clubs from everywhere, the old YVMDFL was wrecked in favour of the ridiculous OEFL which is uncompetitive and has clubs leaving every year, the MPNFL is constantly trying to poach clubs from the SFNL which also has to battle the VAFA. Berwick, one of the biggest junior clubs in Melbourne, is now in the unbelievable situation of being short on senior footballers because they moved miles out of their area into the EFNL and apparently the locals want to play locally.

Clubs and leagues are self absorbed and will tear everything apart with stupid decisions that harm the game more widely, there needs to be a body to set structures in place to ensure competitiveness and max participation for all.

Interesting article in the Leader about a petition to split the divisions.

The context was there is a fear that some clubs won’t last the season due to having no basis of success each week.

This year? Too late?

Even if 2 divisions was the right call, the lack of thought put into the draw was unforgivable. Round 1 saw 6 of the 7 games match a 2023 D2 team against 2023 D3 teams, including the bottom D3 team away to the team that played finals in D2.

What did the WFNL think would happen? Did they think the old D3 teams would suddenly find 100+ decent footballers so they could compete? At least have the draw have the D3 teams play each other twice and the D2 teams once, the best team will still win the flag, the stronger teams would appreciate sterner opposition week to week as would the weaker teams appreciate playing others closer to their level.

If too late to split this year, at least consider a redraw closer to my suggestion.

The WFNL quickly need at least 3 more senior teams for all to survive.

The draw is rubbish

I think north sunshine play Sunshine, Albion and Newport in the first 3-4 weeks

They managed to get 50 players this year, unreal effort for them… they’ll be lucky to have two sides in a few weeks

Essendon league created a Div 3 part way through a season about 8-9 years ago. Was put in place before the season started. 10/8/5 or 9/8/6 would work for 23 teams. From the outside Nth Sun look to be putting effort into building junior and women’s components of the club to increase overall club numbers.

WRFL did the same when Div 3 first formed.

The WRFL created D3 midway through 2014, so there is precedence in this comp but that was decided upon prior to the season too, not during the season.

I think they wanted a premier division with ten teams at all costs

Should have kept it at 8-8-7, it was the most even year last year (besides north sunshine)

There is still time to split the divisions and they should 100% go down this path

Focus on participation and giving everyone the chance to win. That’s how the league will grow
