Parks who utterly annoys me beat Garcia in the final (typical Garcia missing a zillion break points to lose). Credit to Parks winning her first WTA event though
Yeah Parks annoys me too. Didn’t really enjoy the final, even though it was a pretty decent standard. Just didn’t feel like there were too many quality rallies unlike the Thailand final. Garcia couldn’t get a handle on Parks’ serve, and honestly, she hit some massive second serves. Paid off this time but it’s a risky strategy, not going to work every time. The serve was the difference in the match.

Kostyuk continues her fine start to the year, defeating Cîrstea in 3 who had chances in the third.

Ostapenko beat Collins, taking the third 7-5. Kontaveit beat Zhang despite looking like retirement was on the cards early after having her blood pressure taken. Mertens obliterated Trevisan who has no business being ranked where she is.

Tonight the feature matches are Badosa back from injury against Samsonova. Also Pliskova vs Muguruza and Andreescu who hopefully has recovered from her injury scare, up against Putintseva.

In Linz, Kenin went down to Niemeier in what, from all reports, was a high quality encounter. Was hoping Kenin could get up but she went down 6-4 in the third.

Here’s the draw:

Lys and Noskova both in action tonight, of course both at 9:00. Hoping they both get wins.

There was actually a decent handshake between the 2 as well.

Bit of a shock considering the players.

I thought Collins was going to get defuaulted halfway through her and the ump are not exchanging Xmas cards lol

Lys wins!! Took the first but was down 5-1 in the second but she steadied, found her best tennis and ended up winning 7-6. Moves to a new career high with the win. Onwards and upwards!

Meanwhile Noskova is out, loses to indoor specialist van Uytvanck. Obviously Linda has a huge future, but her body language is a concern, sometimes she has a very defeatist demeanour. Something to work on. Her last two losses have been rather forgettable. Youth!

Badosa and Muguruza both out of Abu Dhabi also.

Been a lot of tennis for your girl in the last month. especially for someone so young still.

You can add Andreescu who should never ever have played, is out too. Either Bianca was telling porky pies 3 days ago (retired shoulder injury in semi final) OR she is still injured. I believe the latter, no wonder Putineva beat her.

Noskova looked very tired from the bits I saw, needs a couple of weeks off now.

Agree with both you and LP1, she needs a rest. Adelaide was exhausting, then flying to Melbourne only to lose, went through qualifying in Lyon, then won 2 MD matches. Now Linz. And she’s only 18! She’s got to be careful. She needs to work on her speed and quickness. She’ll never be the quickest but on indoor courts her lack of speed can work against her.

Ok got a bit of viewing to get through tonight. Starting with Kudermetova vs Mertens, then Kostyuk vs Bencic before going to Linz to watch Potapova vs Niemeier. That’s not even factoring in any of the ATP matches I’m interested in.

Thoughts on the crowds of matches you’ve seen? Abu Dhabi pretty lousy, at most 20% full, Linz has been decent but obviously much smaller stadium. Makes you appreciate the crowds we get in Australia and although I get stuck in for their behaviour, at least they rock up. The crowds for the 4th match on stadium court has been woeful like you could actually count the people without too much effort.

There’s a heaps good viewing tonight Rybakina vs Pliskova too

Delightful! That’ll be a cracker match. I honestly don’t see Rybakina having a letdown after the AO. I think she’s too focussed, and I just remember that run early 2020 where she just kept playing and kept winning despite everyone expecting her to collapse.

Currently watching Kudermetova and this is as good as I’ve seen her this year, up 5-1. No doubt she’ll make it complicated as she always does.

If it’s the match from last night yep. Eva is also on tonight

Kuders is so inconsistent. That first set the ball striking was elite and really, as good as anyone on tour. FH was amazing. But then she goes missing. Signs already in the second she’s gone off.

Yesss! Lys at midnight I think. I want to watch but I guess the sensible decision is sleep and watch tomorrow.

Yeah I watched it live. Was waiting for Bencic vs Kostuk

Finished this one, just the one to go before I’m content with where I’m at. Bencic was awesome, very good match indeed. Her ball striking really is top 3 or 4 on tour. I think she’s got a slam in her soon. If she didn’t run into Sabalenka at AO, who knows. Starting Niemeier now, hope it’s a good match.

Won’t spoil it but it’s a good match. Kostuk wasn’t bad either

Kostyuk was excellent. Her defensive skills are actually top tier right now I’d say. She is such a good mover and gets most everything back and actually gets it back with something on it. She must’ve worked really hard in the off season because she looks a much more complete player. Her mind will probably determine how far she goes. I thought she was miles off making any major impact but honestly, she’s not far off it.

She’s probably half a year really competing at the pointy ends of slams

Parks played great in the final in Lyon, she has got a great serve and wasn't overawed by the occasion.
Both Badosa and Mugs withdrew from Abu Dhabi tournament. Mugs for personal reasons.
I have no idea why Rybakina is playing this week.
Currently oncourt Teichman is 4-0 up against Kasatkina. Teichman playing some great tennis.
Its been windy for the past couple of days and rather cool at 21 degrees.
Samsonova beat Krejcokova in straight sets
I know I should post this in general tennis news but read that Svitolina will start playing again in April. We'll see.

Parks suffered from the curse of a tournament winner losing first round in their following tournament - This is a curse for non top 10 players in both tours.
