You probably weren’t alive in the good old days when the VFL scheduled six games at the same time on a Saturday afternoon. If you wanted to know progressive scores at other grounds you had to decipher the alphabet letters on the scoreboard

I've got this novel solution if you have Foxtel.

Watch one of the games live. If you don't want to know the score of the other game, put a tea towel over the right hand top of screen which will show the other game's live score.

Then at 10:15pm, watch the other game and fast forward all the adds and stoppages. Then you're done at midnight on a non work night.

It's that easy...

I don’t own a tea towel. My Saturday is ruined

Every Game in 2026 onwards to start at 2:10pm on a Saturday. Bring Back the Suburban Grounds I say!
How did you handle this back in the day? A weekend without football sounds dull, and I’m grateful to have grown up in an era where games are spread across the entire weekend. Even if some dead rubber matches no longer have a second game running alongside them, the addition of Thursday night footy more than makes up for it. That said, I can appreciate the nostalgia it holds for you.

*And if Kelli Underwood is commentating then pause the Kayo stream for a couple seconds to sync up to whatever radio station you prefer.

Personally, It was far before my time, but I just like the idea of having multiple channels/radio stations to switch over to and live score updates like in FIFA.

Very early season night games are alright, don't want night games much later in Lonny (or Canberra) though. 26 forecast in Lonny for Saturday (9 degrees early Sunday morning so could be cool by game's end).

Not that it seems to matter in rugby and league with night games in Canberra.
I mean, it does affect the league and union in Canberra, they have tiny crowds. Dunno about league but the excuse from my union mates is the weather and the stadium.

Lower crowds, sure, but it doesn't prevent games from being scheduled in night conditions much colder than Launceston reaches was the point.
I mean you can schedule a game in Svalbard, but if no one attends, what’s the point. GIO has garbage crowd numbers, open stadium in cold weather is a factor.

I was at the G round 5 1989, the Pies had a win over Melbourne and Craig Kelly kicked 3 ir 4.

Squinting up at the scoreboard there was clearly an error, Hawthorn vs Geelong said 9 goals to 17? They ironed it out by the end, 30 odd goals each.

Except that's what happened. Bizarre game.

My mother is a nervous as hell Cats fan.

if I'm ever over at my folks' house during a double-header, she'll religiously watch the other game with a book propped up (if the score is in the bottom right) or a towel hanging down (if it's top right).

Then get us to peek every 15 minutes.....
