Re: www.footyjumpers.com

Again, not a dig at the town or the club, but the naming.

Fremantle is a port town - it is the main port of Perth - but it has its own name. It isn't "Port Perth".

Port Melbourne used to have its own name: Sandridge. It got renamed "Port Melbourne" and it's rather lazy to have done so.

Think if other cities had named their ports that way. Port San Francisco, Port New York, Port Vancouver, Port Liverpool etc.

Not quite the same though with the rest of ther world.
We have suburbs, and nominate those suburbs as where we're from.
I grew up in the suburb of Essendon for example. (total size 6 km2)
Over here in BC, as it is in the rest of North America, it's named basically on the local government area.
In Australia, I would have grown up in Moonee Valley according to North American nomenclature. Moonee Valley is 44km2 in total size
To live in Vancouver means to live anywhere in an area from Stanley Park in the north east to UBC in the east, and all the way to Boundary Rd in the west. All up Vancouver is almost 120 km2
So to say they don't have a Port Vancouver is accurate, but they don't have anything else either. There are areas called Kitsilano, Collingwood and Kerrisdale, but you'd need to be a Real Estate Agent to have ever heard of them. Same goes for every North American city.
Melbourne is about twice the size of Vancouver, with 31 local councils.
Vancouver, at half the size, has 9. And you only nominate to live in the city name, no suburbs.
So you live in Vancouver, or Richmond, or Burnaby etc.

And on the topic of real estate agents, suburbs were named Port to improve the real estate value of the properties within them.
To name something Port (Port Adelaide, Port Melbourne etc) told prospective owners and renters there was gainful employment within walking distance.
What is a Sandgate? What is there? Where is Sandgate? Dunno.
Where is Port Melbourne, must be down near the water.

It's nothing a like. Fremantle is a city, it has nothing to do with Perth - it is the main port of Western Australia, it is NOT the main port of Perth - as it is not a part of Perth.

Can't really comment much on Port Adelaide, as i haven't been there - but apparently it is a suburb. Just as Richmond is a suburb. Port Adelaide came from the suburb of Port Adelaide - what do you want them to call themselves?

They didn't just make something up and add Port in front of their name to make a football team that isn't Adelaide.

This is pretty unique to Australia, where clubs have been born from suburbs not just the main city vs main city, due to the distance between main cities. Richmond, Carlton, etc are suburbs of Melbourne. Port Adelaide is a suburb of Adelaide. Exactly the same and nothing like Greater Western, or Western, or West Coast.

Compare it to English football, in london we have Chelsea, Arsenal, West Ham, Millwall, etc if the district of Chelsea was actually called Port Chelsea, they would be called Port Chelsea - that is what Port Adelaide is like, not a made up area of Adelaide.

Can't disagree with any of this. :thumbsu:

Re: www.footyjumpers.com

InCase, you've nailed exactly what I was trying to say :thumbsu:. It simply is the name of the place, as it has been since European settlement, and it would be stupider for them to have ever really created a different name for the club. As I said, now the club could just as easily be called the Alberton Football Club, but upon formation this is not where they were established. Port Adelaide is a large area and still applies to Alberton anyway. From a marketing perspective now, it probably works better anyway. Port Adelaide is a larger area than Alberton and therefore will attract more members on a 'location basis'
Anyway, I'm no geographer or historian and tbh don't really know that much about the Port Adelaide district myself. My mum grew up there but since then, her whole family has moved from there. I live about an hour away South and have no real reason to ever really visit the area.

Re: www.footyjumpers.com

Noarlunga? Willunga?

Don't really wanna go too offtopic but I live in Happy Valley :)
Speaking of Noarlunga though, get around there on Sunday to see the mighty Wineflies PUMP the Emus in the SFL A grade prelim!!!

Re: www.footyjumpers.com

That's a dozen or so miles south of downtown.

According to Google maps, its 23km from the city of Adelaide and a 51 minute drive from the Port ;) Regardless, its a fair way from the port meaning I rarely ever visit the place. Probably only once or twice a year, usually when the club has something on. Don't know heaps about the area anyway :)

I've never been to Bury (at least not while I've been conscious), even though it's only about an hours drive away.

Sounds like something from an Aussie horror movie.

Re: www.footyjumpers.com

I assume its in Victoria. Sorry I don't know too much about Victorian geography  Haven't been to Melbourne since the 07 GF (only for a day anyway) and was really too young to actually pay attention to the locations of things when I went before this.

I'm sure that was fun for you.

Re: www.footyjumpers.com

Haha I actually have never heard of Bury  Once again, can't really say I've ever really bothered to study British maps. Hate soccer and couldn't give a rats arse about the EPL which may have something to do with this
And yes, I would've liked to have walked out the MCG at that GF too. Was worth it for the experience and the atmosphere but otherwise was an absolute nightmare of a day. All I can say is that we were still the 2nd best team all year and on the day I don't really think anyone would've got much closer to Geelong. They were simply awesome!

Anyway, we're getting ridiculously off-topic, I think we should all probably move on ;)

Re: www.footyjumpers.com

Only Grand Final I've ever turned off :D

Only GF I've ever sung the Geelong team song after for 2 hours straight :D
Was at my cousins place at the time and we were both singing the song. At Woodcroft (Southern suburbs for all the non-SA people).
