I can't believe the lack of respect for other countries law and order from Australians, do people realize they are defending criminals?? Just because they are Aussie doesn't give them a free get out of jail card, literally!!

They weren't asking for a get out of jail free card, they were asking to be kept in jail for life.

I don't support the death penalty but no one can pretend that they weren't aware of the potential consequences to their actions. They have been painted as martyrs by the Australian media when the reality is that this wasn't their first drug smuggling trip and it wasn't intended to be their last. They were thugs and bullies who were behind death threats to their fellow smugglers and schemes to bring approx. 144kg of heroin into this country on more than one occasion.

I feel for their families. If it were my brother I don't think I'd cope. But that is where my sympathy ends. Don't think that I'm not aware of the political ramifications this may have, I very much am, but...

Been on fire lately, mate

It hasn't run its course at all.
When taking life is acceptable in any part of what we call 'our world' we're a long way behind where we should be and showcases us as being, not quite the civilized lot we think we are.

I heard this years ago and still think it to be one of the better sayings.........for me:

"If someone did something to my family, I'd want to kill them............but I wouldn't want to live in a world where I was allowed to."

I think it should apply to nations as much as it does to individuals.
I completely agree with you. Shouldn't exist at all, but it does in some places, including one of our closest allies, the US. Everything should be done to eradicate it as a form of punishment as it's pretty well proven not to particularly work that well as a prevention method.

I just find it hard to feel sorry for people who got caught on their 3rd time exporting drugs to Australia, who were also coordinating others who got caught in other asian countries around the same time as they got caught. Obviously knew what they were in for when things went bad. On top of that, Chan sent threats to those people in jail overseas from his own jail cell telling them to keep quiet. Hardly remorseful.

I feel extremely sorry for the people their actions have hurt, and also their families that have been put through all this

Yeah, I went through a time that I convinced myself that Capital Punishment was O.K. but now feel a little silly for doing so.

As long as we find need for such a process we can't really call ourselves civilized. I know the action comes first but the reaction is just as bad. One day...
To 99% of people capital punishment would scare the crap out of enough to not even consider doing anything that bad. Unfortunately it's not those people that it is targeted at. If someone is going to risk death to perform certain actions, then nothing will stop them from attempting it.

You are in somebody else's country breaking the law... They are criminals and they knew the consequences!

100% correct.
Like Mebby I feel for there families, but they knew the risks associated with what they were doing.

Many laws, both here and overseas do not deserve any respect whatsoever.
Women aren't allowed to drive in Saudi Arabia. You think that deserves respect?
Just because it doesn't fit your way of living does not mean it's wrong no matter what it is... If the criminal rate is down, then obviously the laws are serving there purpose!! Laws weren't made for respect or to be admired, they're to protect people!!

Laws are to protect people. Really? All laws?

What about the laws and human rights in North Korea..............as an extreme example. Are they in place to protect people or to protect the government?
Are we still talking about criminal law here?

Unfortunately hark-man, I deal with the type of people who do deserve the death penalty, everyday , so I'm a lot less tolerant than most.
We have to abide by the laws of their country, just as they have to here.
I'm very sure they knew the ramifications of their actions, before they went ahead, but they still went and did it. And destroyed the lives of 7 others in the process.
So to reply to your question, yes I am ok with the death penalty.

There's a reason so many countries don't have capital punishment anymore, it's inhumane and sets society back. Criminal in this country or another the value of a life isn't respected and there's just too many issues in the world where the Australian government can have a direct impact that I'd like them to carry this merciful intent to.

Hey look, we have asylum seekers! Let's start there...

That's your prerogative but it just leaves a really bad taste in my mouth.

I don't see it as humane which in turn makes it a blight on humanity in my eyes.

Some people subscribe to the eye for an eye theory but I just feel it's all a little too 'dark ages'............for my liking at least.

Ask Martin Bryant's victims families, all 35 dead and the 23 injured.

Dogs like that deserve a lead shot, quick and swift.

No doubt there are people who deserve to die, but I don't see how we are bettered as a society by killing them, rather than leaving them in jail for the rest of their lives.

We should be aiming to be better.

Yeah, rehabilitation is the key.

Pretty sure Julian Knight, Milat, Birnie, Denyer, Bunting and all those f*****g idiots have another chance and be given a chance to be let loose in society.

They shouldn't (and won't) be let free, but that doesn't mean we should kill them.

And the thing about capital punishment is, it isn't only the deserving who are executed, but the innocent, the mentally ******ed, or (like in this instance) political victims.

I was too young, but what was our government's reaction to Van Tuong Nguyen's execution and in the lead-up to it? Was it similar to this? If not, it comes off as if we believed we could bully Indonesia into submission.

It was quite similar, but not as big.
A big difference with the Bali case, is how much that the two men had clearly reformed, the level of corruption in the trial process, and that they were executed for political reasons by a weak president. It is unlikely that SBY would have had them killed.
