What happened last night once again exposed a certain xenophobia of our country in regards to foreign policy.

Have yet to hear the US condemn.

Unfortunately, our government is a bit picky when it comes to opposition of the death penalty, however if the US was going to execute an Australian citizen, I think you would find a similar level of opposition, especially if it was for a non violent crime (which the US doesn't do).

What about the other couple of Australians currently on death row overseas? We don't hear boo about them.

Some Australians died, a royal baby is on the way, there was a fire somewhere, Tredders will give a sports report, and someone will point to a map and tell us the future.

That is a very fat 48 minutes.

Media circus of bull crap
Let's talk about Nepal not people who knowingly broke a countries law knowing what would happen to them
I hate Australian media

Anybody else know Peter Gardner's name? Currently on death row in China for attempting to smuggle up to 60kg of ice with someone else. She got let off, he's going to be executed. No mainstream media attention = no celebrity video or candlelight vigil.

Who's heard much about these people? I sure haven't.

I had heard of the one in Vietnam. Gardner's case is still on trial but it seems pretty open and shut if you read the charges.
It seems that people have happily jumped on the Bali 2 bandwagon because it was dressed up so nicely for them (look! One can paint and the other one has found religion!) but they're not actually that interested in anyone else on death row.

Was reading China has a 99% conviction rate once it reaches the courts. He's done for if true.

Most of you come up with arguments that attempt to distract people from the main argument. Harks put it simply. Are you in favour of capital punishment or are you against it? I believe we have a toad and a stig who would be quite happy to be members of a firing squad. As for the others there's a lot of chest thumping but not much else.

I remember the last execution in Victoria. Ronald Ryan was put to death for killing a prison officer when he escaped from Pentridge with Peter Walker. There is plenty of forensic evidence to suggest it was impossible for Ryan to have shot the prison officer. The Victorian Premier Henry Bolte was determined to carry out the sentence and wouldn't listen to reason. The outcry was enormous but the execution went ahead. That was February 1967. People finally got it. No matter the crime executing people resolves nothing. The State has to set a better example than barbarism.

I get quite emotional when I think of the poor buggers being put to death. On Wednesday morning at around 3.30am when the news came through I was blown away by despair. I must admit I'm still wondering how normal people can display no compassion at a time like this.

Chest beating? I don't see any chest beating.

I do not support the death penalty but I will not participate in candlelight vigils for convicted heroin traffickers.

And be fair to the Toad. Because of his job he's a lot closer to this than any of the rest of us, so I can understand his position here.

Who is chest thumping? I've said that i am against the death penalty and do not support it at all. It is not a valid deterrant and way too many innocent people lose half their lives on death row or are put to death wrongly.

Doesn't mean i have to show empathy towards people who made crazy decisions knowing what the consequences were.

I'm dead against it.

Arguments for:

1. People knew what they were getting into..................................(A life sentence is no less a deterrent than a death sentence)
2. We should respect the laws of the land.....................................(That doesn't go into the bigger moral question)
3. Let's eradicate all the low-lifes and scumbags off the earth........(By doing what they have done under the guise of justice?)

Arguments against and there are many but the one that really sticks for me:

1. We cannot pretend to be civilized nor humane society when taking anothers life is the answer to a problem.
No doubt that there are people that may not deserve to be drawing breath but it shouldn't be our call to deny them to do so.
It's primitive and does in no way serve to making this world a better place.

Burning witches at the stake was also O.K. not so long ago and now it's seen to be barbaric. How is this any different?
History will not see this act as being a particularly forward thinking one. For that I have no doubt.
I'm dead against it also Hark. That said, my stance against the penalty does not therefore mean i have to mourn the loss of the 2 Australians who did something stupid not just once, but 3 times and would have continued to do so if not caught.

The main reason i'm so against it is mainly due to the very numerous amounts of cases where innocent people have lost their lives (not just through death) due to incorrect convictions that stuck them on death row. Imagine what it would feel like being put away for decades knowing you've done no wrong. That's the highest injustice in my books. There are many monsters out there who it wouldn't change my life if they ceased to exist, but my major thoughts are with how flawed of a punishment system it is.

For myself I sit in a certain grey area with the death penalty. As a rule I don't believe in it, but there are crimes where I believe it could come into play. For example, Ariel Castro the death penalty should have well and truly come into play. For what he put those girls through is completely unimaginable.

That's fair enough too. Everyone has their own opinion on these subjects and i won't take that away from anyone. It's important to value everyones position on subjects like this, unless those opinions are ranted down our throats in an aggressive manner. My opinions are my own, right or wrong.

I think I'm anti death penalty and then I think of monsters like Ariel Castro and I start to question my own beliefs.

I think we're both on the same page here. Only the death penalty for the most heinous of crimes. Castro case is the perfect example of this.
