Now for a new season as the finals start, Kinglake to beat Seville & Emerald to beat Yarra Junction, Olinda to freshen up, & Gallichio to kick his ton!

If it could come to fruition the structure of having regionalised divisions would be perfect. It has been a success in the MPNFL and certainly evened out over a short period of time and probably ensured the survival of a number of clubs such as Hastings, Dromana and Sorrento who are all now having successful periods.

Perhaps also the idea of Bonnie Doon and possibly Swanpool entering the league may be a consideration as it could facilitate the idea of creating a new divisional structure based on geographical locations.

I do like Lakers comments though. Our league certainly cares about the member clubs and does not place a primary focus on the top division of football unlike in other leagues where money rules and the teams that cannot match it struggle to survive. We are in a good state in the YVMDFL and should certainly be appreciative of what we have - a flourishing football and netball competition that allows community participation both on and off field.

I would like to know what someone from South Belgrave thought about their move to the EFL - they are still travelling reasonably big distances (eg. Templestowe, Canterbury and Surrey Park) and have nothing in common with these clubs, there are no local derbies and possibly less family involvement due to not having netball which was quite successful at South. Moving may have benefits but also has negatives too.
Trying to follow this from Peru (with a Peruvian keyboard, too!), so have some idea of the travel problems! We are edging ever closer to regionalising the comp. with new and distant clubs joining us, so we have to plan carefully.
Good reasons, as pointed out by Lakers and LFG. The YVMDFL has a long history of caring for its clubs and this is unmatched in my experiences with three country and two metro leagues. But times are changing and we have to change with it.
Regionalising has pros and cons. We will lose some strong rivalries built up since the 60´s, weaker clubs will find it hard to compete against power clubs, and the southern region may well be a stronger division based on recent history. However, it will revamp local rivalries, reduce travel and make it a little easier to coax kids out in the morning derbies. All of these are necessary elements for clubs to survive. Maybe it also offers a chance for imaginative finals with the winners of each region playing for the league ´championship´. I´m sure that will promote some interest!
We need to protect the clubs we have and offer a viable option for other clubs to join us. Regionalising the league has been discussed before and considering it again as times change only makes sense.

thought you had been a bit quiet monnie hawk
the only problem i see going to zones is that at least when you drop back to second division it gives you a chance to become competitive again. Also and i think i am correct all the sides in second division have played in least 1 final series in the last 4 years with belgrave and thorton playing in G Fs in recent years. i think in first division this year will be the first time in about 5 years that the final 5 won't be the same. having said that if it does become a zoned competition then its really up to all the clubs somehow to become competitive against the stronger first division clubs. One thing is for sure though if it does change to areas then it is highly unlikely to go back to a division 1 and 2 system. So the whole is going to be travel vs competiveness. If it does ever come to a club vote on this it should make for an interesting meeting

ive said it before if any other teams are gonna come in changes need to be made. it would probably take a couple of years to sort itself out but would eventually rival mpnfl that has 3 divisions but no promotions.

Mountain District
Upwey, Belgrave, Olinda, Belgrave, Emerald, Gembrook, Monbulk, Silvan

Yarra Valley
Warburton, Yarra Junction, Powelltown, Seville, Wandin, Mt Evelyn, Woori Yallock

Great Divide
Thornton, Alex, Bonnie Doon, Yea, Kinglake, Yarra Glen, Healsville

This way would keep all the big rivalry games that bring the big crowds and the draw could be worked so that the longest trips only play each other twice. maybe the valley could entice coldstream in to make 8 and the mountain district could entice sth belgrave back for geographical reasons.
We cant be serious about this concept, this would do more harm than good. You would have woori winning the flag in YV comp.Healseville in the GD and monbulk and upwey alternating the honours each year.If i was from powelltown i would rather travel to bonnie doon where they would have a chance of winning than traveling 20 min down the road to woori to be beaten by 60 goals. And i cant see how it would bring back all the big rivalry games, i only see us losing all the big rivalry healsville-monbulk,woori -upwey,yarra junction-emerald,healsville-woori.
We all know that the 2nd divvy comp. isnt ideal but we have to remeber we are playing in a country comp. and traveling long distances is all part of the deal.

The Thornton Eildon vote count was held yesterday with the best and fairest to be decided winners as follow

Seniors
1st - Brandon Kapakoulakis
2nd - Rhys Chapman

Reserves
1st - Andy Reddan
2nd - Jack Savage

A Grade Netball
Kathy Brown

B Grade Netball
Lisa Carlton

Congratulations to all the winners on a good effort for the year.
It was particularly good to see the young guys figure with the winner of senior and 1st and 2nd in reserves b&f's still eligible for Under 18's this year if we had a side so a good effort by those guys in their first full year of senior footy.

This concept was voted on by the clubs 2 years ago, a unanimous vote to leave the div 1 and div 2 structure, even South Belgrave did not vote for it

I am a South player/supporter localfootyguru.

Every side we played in our first year (2008) was within 25km of our home ground, 5 of them within 16km.

Templestowe came into Div 4 this year and are longest road trip at 30 odd km from South Belgrave. Thats a lot better than some of the trips we were faced with in YVMDFL. No doubt the Netball would be welcome back but overall our crowds are very strong.

There was no doubt we were losing existing players and recruits because of the travel in YVMDFL.

Grounds and Facilities are very good in the EFL also.

The YVMDFL is a great competition and South left behind some great rivalries but there is no doubt our club made the right decision.

l admired South for having the guts to make the decision to go to the EFL.l am sure it was'nt taken lightly.l heard that they appointed a well respected clubman to head it up and it was done with a lot homework and professionalism.2 other clubs from 2nd division touted the idea to go the following year but did not push on with the idea. One had trouble convincing the members and there main argument for staying was the rivalry concept. To me this is not a valid reason to stay in a competition when your club is struggling to survive.Success and failure runs a very fineline. To me survival and traditions of a football club and providing a good sound club for locals to play at is more important than the dreams of some supporters who refuse to move with the times.l will cop a bit of flack over some comments and have done over the years but time and the success of South Belgrave has proved me right.Clubs need vision and the right people at the helm to make the hard decisions.Although some spectators noses will be out of joint, once they see the club is doing the right thing they always come back.

Fair Enough Captiger & Tigersman I will listen & hear your points. You both sound like you have greater wisdom from the internal mechanics at Sth. Maybe my belief in the divisional structure on location is wrong, I am happy to learn.
I believe no system is perfect. But we must look what is best for the long term survival of footy in our broader area. It is easy as clubs or individuals to think for their own personal needs when discussing these topics. I didnt give a rats tossbag about the travel (most 1st divi clubs dont), but it is clearly an issue.
So how do we come up with a better footy league for all of us to compete in? We need to stop thinking about the now & plan for the future. Some lateral vision is needed & not something from 1999 as the landscape has dramtically changed, WE NEED TO THINK HOW IT WILL BE IN 5 YRS TIME.
When Sth rejected the proposal were they only thinking for themselves? What proposals or structural changes did they come up with to allow them to stay in the YV?
Its easy to find the problems, lets come up with some descent solutions that allow clubs to prosper & reinvent themselves in our league instead of in another.

Pretty sure South put the option of geographical on the table a number of times & were on most occassions told to stop complaining - mainly by the non travelling Divi 1 clubs of the time. It is amazing how all of a sudden people are suggesting it again now, and some of it is coming from Divi 1 clubs - maybe the travel factor that the Divi 2 clubs were banging on about really was & is an issue . Why is it often the case that people don't want to fix things until it is captain obvious it is broken, rather than be pro active in the 1st place?

And until ALL clubs decide to make the decision based on what is best for local football & the league rather than themselves and the club they are associated with, you will never get the best possible option because there is too much emotion involved

Sometimes as much as you love what you have, it can hold you back, and in order to prosper you need a change. Maybe that should be the thinking of some clubs - better to be alive in a different league in 5/10 years time , than to not exist at all

I believe that Silvan couldn't expect any thing higher than div,4.

Not much point now that all the money seems to have dried up

There is a regular comment that the Divvy 1 clubs voted this down, at the meeting where this was put to a vote. ALL bar 1 club voted to keep the existing structure with South abstaining.

I would imagine that some of the stronger clubs would think of moving leagues if there was a change, winning by 40 goals plus would not help them build their club, it would in fact pull them down.

I see the comment that the only way foward is to change, good changes bring you foward, bad changes can ruin you.

It is not broke so just leave it

I was in attendance at the meeting that was called (as a result of a proposal by Gembrook) to discuss the restructure of the divisions. After a long discussion a vote was taken and all clubs (both first and second division) with the exception of South Belgrave voted to retain the existing system.

Football Wrap 15th August
1st Division Round 17

Warburton Millgrove 18.14.122 defeated Alexandra 11.7.73. Both teams playing for pride as neither will take part in finals. Alex has had one of their toughest ever seasons and unfortunately hasn’t broken through for a win this season. Warby wasn’t about to let Alex get their first win here as Scott Muir (6 goals) and Vincent Muccitelli (6 goals) were too strong for Alex’s defense. Warby ran away in the last quarter kicking 7 goals to 2 to win comfortably at the final siren. Warby’s best: Michael Walker, Grant Newing and Daniel Hewitt. Alexandra’s best: Chris Mullins, James Kidd and Tyson Biffon.

Upwey Tecoma 13.14.92 defeated Gembrook Cockatoo 8.14.62. Gembrook’s form has been good of late and even though they lost this game they certainly took it up to the flag favorites. Upwey had the better start to the day and held a 4 goal lead at the first change. Upwey could only stretch that lead by 1 more goal by the end of the day. Upwey wasn’t at its best but that would be taking a little bit away from Gembrook as they were very gallant in defeat. Upwey’s best: Andrew McQualter, Christopher Hayes and Liam Burke. Gembrook’s best: Nathan Leversha, Shannon Richardson and Craig Clarke.

Woori Yallock 11.11.77 defeated Healesville 10.13.73. A fantastic spectacle put on by these 2 sides that will feature in finals in a big way. Healesville has found some good form at the right end of the season and even though they walked off without the 4 points they will know they can go with the best when it comes to finals. Good teams win close games and thats what Woori Yallock is. The last quarter was intense as scores were level at the last change. There was only 3 goals kicked in the final term but it was Woori who kicked 2 of the 3 to win in an absolute thriller. Woori Yallock’s best: Patrick Sharp, Richard Schroth and Joel Williamson. Healesville’s best: Daniel Johnson, Beau Wilkinson and Luke Barclay.

Monbulk 23.25.163 defeated Silvan 10.4.64. Having a look at the final scores it’s hard to believe that Silvan was only 2 points down at half time. Monbulk was exceptional in the 2nd half booting 8 goals in the 3rd quarter and then another 8 goals in the last. Silvan had no answers as Monbulk shared the ball magnificently and ended the day with 14 separate goal scorers, the best of them being Michael Hughson with 5. Monbulk’s best: Chris Mitchell, Adam Gee and Dean Cleven. Silvan’s best: Steve McGrady, Daniel Norman and Sam Coen.

Mount Evelyn 26.20.176 defeated Wandin 3.8.26. Wandin had won their last 2 games and would have gone into this game with some confidence as Mount Evelyn had dropped their last 3. Wandin’s confidence was shattered early and they didn’t recover as Mount Evelyn went about destroying them. Mount Evelyn’s Christopher Murphy was superb down forward with 8 goals as Christopher Tesoriero had a field day picking up possessions at will with a best on ground performance. Mount Evelyn’s best: Steven Teseriero, Christopher Murphy and Michael Noonan.

2nd Division Round 18

Belgrave 8.16.64 defeated Emerald 8.15.63. Nobody in their right mind would have tipped bottom of the ladder Belgrave to beat Emerald who have shown some good form of late. Right from the start you could see Belgrave had come to play. At 3 quarter time Belgrave held a 23 point lead and Emerald had a challenge on their hands. Emerald was never going to lie down and did hit back in the final quarter, Belgrave could only manage 2 behinds in the final term as Emerald had every chance to steal the game but kicked an inaccurate 3.6 to go down by the smallest of margins. Even though Belgrave ended the season at the wrong end of the ladder they showed great character to finish the season off with a great hard fought win. Belgrave’s best: Nathaniel Fage, Darren Sidebottom and Brett Thompson. Emerald’s best: Thomas Williams, Steven Cusworth and Matthew Steer.

Kinglake 24.23.167 defeated Thornton Eildon 8.10.58. Kinglake continue to impress with their finishes to games. Last week it was 12 goals in the quarter against Yarra Glen, this week it was 11 goals in the last quarter over Thornton. Thornton held a 10 point lead at quarter time but that was as good as it got for them as Kinglake booted 20 goals to 3 after quarter time to finish Thornton’s season on a sour note. Kinglake’s Brent Gallichio continued his excellent form in front of the big sticks adding another 8 goals to his tally. Kinglake’s best: James Walker, Adam Butterworth and Mathew Thomas. Thornton’s best: Rhys Chapman, Zackary Carden and Chris Maher.

Olinda Ferny Creek 21.17.143 defeated Yarra Junction 8.7.55. Even though it was a big margin at the end of the game the scoreboard did flatter Olinda a little bit. Yarra Junction was in this game somewhat at 3 quarter time trailing by 34 points. Olinda showed in the last quarter why they are the flag favorites as they found some of their best form to finish the game in style with a 9 goal to 1 final term. Olinda will now have a weeks rest after finishing the season on top and will do their homework on the Kinglake v Seville game next week. Olinda will play the winner of that match for the right to play off in the Grand Final. Olinda’s best: Michael Scott, George Azzam and Andrew Evans. Yarra Junction’s best: Brad Charman, Hugh Wadsworth and Darcy Kiernan.

Powelltown 18.10.118 defeated Yea 17.15.117. Another 1 point game, this time with a come from behind victory in the last quarter. Powelltown held a 13 point lead at the half and looked the slightly better side. Yea came out after the half and played one of their best quarters booting 7.6 to 3.4 to regain the lead and went into the final quarter with a 13 point lead. Powelltown clawed their way back into the game slowly and finished the day with a 5.2 quarter to Yea’s 2 goals in one of the most exciting quarters of the year. Powelltown finish the season with 5 wins and showed some good signs. They will be looking forward to a more rewarding 2010. Powelltown’s best: Bobby Walker, Brian Muller and Michael White. Yea’s best: Jake Connell, Andrew Hunter and Daniel Evans.

Yarra Glen 12.12.84 defeated Seville 10.13.73. Seville’s late season form hasn’t been great and they would have been looking forward to getting back on the winners list before finals against Yarra Glen. Yarra Glen had other ideas as they stayed within striking distance all day. Seville held a slight lead for most of the game and went into the last quarter with a 15 point lead. Yarra Glen’s last quarters have been their downfall this season but it was to be their saviour in this game. The Thunder was superb in the last quarter kicking 4.4 and holding Seville to just 2 behinds to record a great come from behind win. Yarra Glen would be disappointed with their season but they are a very capable side at their best and they should be a big improver in 2010. Seville plays Kinglake next week in their 1st final and it will be interesting to see how they bounce back from this defeat. Yarra Glen’s best: Stephen Roberts, Peter Moate and David Watt.

How come Silvan are so keen to fly the coop now that they are being beaten most weeks. They were happy to sprout their worth when it was them doing the beating every week. Now we are hearing they want to leave the league and go to the EFL also going around is they have asked to be put back to 2nd div. Every club for the last two or three years has had to put up with being beaten by Silvan nearly every week so i think they should suck it up and just come out next year in div 1 and have a crack at it. No point sooking now!

Under 18’s Football Wrap 15 August 2009

Warburton Millgrove (D1) 14.10.94 defeated Alexandra (D1) 9.10.64. An even 4 quarter performance by Warby as they held off a determined Alexandra. Alex battled hard but Warby had just that little bit more structure to their game which gave them a 5 goal victory. Warby’s best: Matthew Wappett, Shawn Andueza and Luke James. Alexandra’s best: Stephen Steiner, Matthew Steiner and Zachary Vincent.

Belgrave (D2) 7.21.63 defeated Emerald (D2) 7.4.46. This wasn’t a pretty game but the conditions certainly didn’t help. Belgrave should have had this game wrapped up well before they did but their inaccuracy kept Emerald in the game. Belgrave was so inaccurate that they had kicked 1 less goal than Emerald at 3 quarter time but still lead the game by 7 points (4.16 to 5.3). Belgrave was a little better in the last quarter scoring 3.5 to 2.1 to finish the season with what could only be called an ugly win. Belgrave’s best: Peter Gough, Nicholas Nation and Brett Thompson.

Upwey Tecoma (D1) 14.14.98 defeated Gembrook Cockatoo (D1) 6.8.44. A slow start to this game with both teams on 2.7 at half time. Upwey got going in the 3rd with a great 8 goal to 1 quarter to put the game beyond doubt. It was 3 goals a piece in the final term which gave Upwey a convincing 54 point win. Upwey’s best: Jackson Lucas, Kris O’Brien and Dillon Devers. Gembrook’s best: Mitchell Thompson, Damian Rozenboom and Liam Loveday.

Healesville (D1) 11.13.79 defeated Woori Yallock (D1) 4.8.32. Healesville never looked in trouble even though they were held goalless in the third term. Woori only managed 1 goal in that quarter and still found themselves 25 points down at the last change. Healesville booted 3.6 to 2 behinds to record a comfortable win. Healesville’s best: James Tweddle, Trent Krikas and David Hickey. Woori Yallock’s best: Jake Matthews, Nicholas Korosa and Daniel Robinson.

Monbulk (D1) 10.14.74 defeated Powelltown (D2) 5.5.35. Monbulk always looked the better side and possibly should have won by a bigger margin but for some poor kicking. Powelltown did battle the day out and did outscore Monbulk in the last term by 3 points. Monbulk’s best: Sam Whittington, Thomas Latimer and Lachlan Henwood. Powelltown’s best: Steven Sanders, Winston Shefford and Nathan Moody.

Olinda Ferny Creek (D2) 26.13.169 defeated Yarra Junction (D2) 6.9.45. Olinda was in complete control as they crushed Yarra Junction. Olinda’s 2nd quarter was outstanding as they added 10.4 to their 5.6 quarter time score. Olinda continued their good form in the 2nd half adding another 10.3 to Junctions 4.6 to win by a whopping 124 points. Olinda’s best: Owen Raszkiewicz, Tom Dawson and Callum Beattie. Yarra Junction’s best: Jamie Collins, Devon Collins and Toby Hawkins.

Mount Evelyn (D1) 11.7.73 defeated Seville (D2) 11.5.71. What a game this one turned out to be. Mount Evelyn got off to the better start kicking with the breeze and taking a 21 point lead into the first break. Seville then booted 6 goals to 2 behinds to take a 15 point lead at half time. Mount Evelyn then kicked 4 goals to 1 to take a 3 point lead going into the last quarter. Mount Evelyn was superb in the last quarter kicking 3 goals straight against a stiff breeze. Seville did outscore Mount Evelyn in the last but it was by just the 1 behind which wasn’t enough to secure them victory. Mount Evelyn’s best: Gary Carolan, Ryan Caccamo and Shannon McIlrath. Seville’s best: Christopher Pahi, Michael Garvic and Kevin Tormey.

Netball Wrap, 15th August
DIVISION ONE:

As the end of the season is approaching fast, the results for all games this week were influential. For some teams, each game is a needed win, when others have a bit more room to breathe. However no matter what position on the ladder the teams are, they all give their best. Alexandra played against Warburton Millgrove this week, at Alexandra. Alexandra played well, however Millgrove took the win, 49 goals to 29 goals. Adele Collard shot 26 goals this week, and Melanie Hancock shot 23. The Alexandra defenders let their defence slip a little bit this week, and that worked in the favour of the opposition. For Alexandra, Skye McDonald shot an impressive 19 goals, and Emma Kidd shot 10 goals.

Mount Evelyn had yet another win, against one of their top competition, Wandin. Defeating their opposition by 21 goals, (Mount Evelyn 43, Wandin 22) they seem to be on a great run. Wandin swapped shooters a little bit, with Courtney McDonald shooting 12 goals, Sharmini Jane Philp shot 6 goals, and Katie Upton shot 4 goals. The girls played well in the ring, using the available space to their advantage. For Mount Evelyn, Kate Youlton shot 28 goals, and Sarah Hogan shot 15 goals.

Healesville hosted Woori Yallock this week, at Badger Creek. Healesville haven’t had a great season this year, and this round was no different. Woori Yallock shot 45 goals, against Healesville’s 28 goals. Woori Yallock are showing some fine form, and this was especially noted today. Alison Oldfield shot 35 goals, Rhonda Schrieber shot 7, and Jordan Kennedy shot 3 goals. For Healesville, Louise Farrow shot 21 goals, Corrine Tesselaar shot 5 goals, and Elizabeth Kay shot 2 goals.

DIVISION TWO:

This week was the last round of the season for the fixed round competition. The ladder finishes with Powelltown on top, suffering only one loss, with a fantastic season. Emerald followed with only two losses, and a great threat if there ever was one to Powelltown. Emerald have shown great improvement, and remained consistent and strong all season. Yea finished third, with three losses, and a good season all up and Thornton Eildon finished fourth, with seven losses, to complete the top four. When stats are compared, it looks like a significant difference separates Thornton from Yea, however Thornton have really come together in the second half of this season, growing as a team to show what they are capable of.

Closely behind Thornton was Yarra Junction, also having had seven losses, however a considerable percentage difference. Junction has also had a bit of an up and down season, with some great wins, alongside some embarrassing losses. Olinda finished sixth, showing incredible improvement this season, with 4 great wins. The coach is very proud of Olinda this year, and they have worked hard to show a difference. Seville followed, with three wins, getting used to this competition, as well as Kinglake, however Seville resided over Kinglake due to a minor percentage difference. Kinglake have, naturally, had quite an upsetting season, however they did really well to manage to get and keep together a team, and should be commended on their effort. Yarra Glen brought up the rear of the competition ladder, showing quite a difference to the predictions from the start of the season.

Kinglake played against Thornton Eildon this week, in an unruly fashion, with both teams having tempers flaring. The overall score read 30 – 43, in favour of Thornton. Nikki Davison shot 28 goals this round, with Sarah Debono also shooting well. For Kinglake, Claire McMahon shot 23 goals, and Sally Nott shot 7 goals.

Powelltown dominated over Yea, 52 – 35. For Powelltown, Samantha Hansen shot 39 goals, and Stephanie Broadway shot 13 goals. For Yea, Amanda Akers shot 18 goals, Cindy Hayes shot 17 goals, and Rhiannon Aldous shot 13 goals.

Olinda had a fantastic game this week, really showing all of the skills they have obtained over the last season. Losing to Yarra Junction by merely two goals, both teams were on edge. For Yarra Junction, Leiarna Kasso shot 25 goals, and Georgia Stanke shot 11 goals. For Olinda, Lucy Allman shot 23 goals, and Natalie Sloan shot 11 goals.

Seville defeated Yarra Glen this week, 35 – 19. Played at Seville, Zoe Abruzzese finished her season in style, with 20 goals. Melanie Allen also shot 15 goals, as she worked well within the ring. Yarra Glen had Tanya Moate, who shot 10 goals, Meaghan Carter; who shot 7 goals, and Renae Turner who shot 2 goals, to make up their total.

This week will have the Elimination Finals begin, with Ladder position number 4 verse 5, that being Thornton against Yarra Junction, at Olinda. Whoever loses, will be out of the competition. Ladder position 2 will play against 3, that being Emerald verse Yea, also at Olinda.

Good luck to all teams that are playing, and a very sincere thank you to all coaches who wrote to me details of the games week by week, it is much appreciated!
