You serious? Only 76,707 at MCG for a Semi Final

Finals attendances are really nothing to brag or bag about to be honest because they really fluctuate and even the smallest clubs draw massive crowds to finals at the G.

Have a look at North Melbourne in '97, how do you draw the same crowd against West Coast and a decent drawing side like Geelong?

3rd Quarter Final 1997
Geelong 2.4 5.6 6.7 9.7 (61)
Nth Melb 3.4 6.9 8.10 11.13 (79)
Crowd: 55,561 at Melbourne Cricket Ground

1st Semi Final 1997
Nth Melb 2.2 5.4 10.6 15.8 (98)
West Coast 5.1 8.6 11.8 12.13 (85)
Crowd: 55,781 at Melbourne Cricket Ground

Bad weather at the quarter final? The semi was a Series ticket?

Finals attendances dont make any sense.

The QF was Sunday Night in pouring rain, about as bad as it gets for crowds.

Carey was magic that night, too.

Collingwood V St Kilda - 76,707 (MCC - 80,000)
Hawthorn V W Bulldogs - 76,703 (MCC - 72,000)
Geelong V St Kilda - 71,653 (MCC - 84,000)
W Bulldogs V Sydney - 42,753 (MCC - 58,000)

Hawks/Dogs game aside, all MCG based finals have drawn under expectations

Maybe they better move the Hawthorn V Saints game to Telstra Dome. Might give it more atmosphere;)

consistantly stuffing up the national anthem

I thought 'Long way to the top' was our national anthem

Seriously though, it's the ticket prices more than anything else that would keep me away. As it was, my Dad and I spent $100 between us just going to the elimination final at AAMI, and we ate lunch in the car. Add another $30 for 6 beers.

The AFL might point at the lowest ticket price and call it affordable, but when only a third of the ground is on sale for that price, how can you still expect a sellout?

Laughable stuff.

Try following a Perth side and paying $3,500 to get to a final, pay for an hotel and get your tickets.

Vic fans may be becoming like Sydney people - theatregoers - not enough passion - soft.
;)
Faark your gonna have a lotta spare cash in the future :)

Funny how some of the people defending these poor Melbourne attendances are the same ones who laughed at Adelaide only a week ago...
Yeah but the Crows game drew below what the Crows membership base is, this game pretty much got all the members in, it was the lack of interest from the neutrals that kept the crowd down

The AFL were selling tickets that cost far too much, for a game that was scheduled, against protest, at a time that has already been proven throughout this season and the last, to have the lowest crowd numbers - Saturday afternoon. It's even worse when you put it up against the other family friendly event on at the time, the Show, which notched up record crow figures this year.

When money is tight, as it is with skyrocketing oil prices affecting everything from fuel to groceries these days, people are just that much more choosy about where they spend their dollars. Plus, Saturday afternoon means that significant numbers of football fans, and more importantly the country fans that make up 10% of the membership, are busy with their own amateur league and junior league finals.

The AFL could quite easily have shifted the Swans v Kangaroos game to Saturday afternoon with absolutely no effect on the crowds, and shifted the Crows v Collingwood game to the Saturday night slot where it was never going to conflict with amateur football, and unlikely to be challenged by the Adelaide Show. Instead, they decided to be pig headed (shocking thing for Vlad and Adrian to be accused of, I know) and blunder on with their obvious mistakes yet again.

The only Victorian teams that can get over 80K between them, consistantly, are Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon and Richmond. Very disappointing crowd for a final but you cannot manufacture "blockbusters". I keep saying this to no avail.

Which explains why Collingwood/Carlton (once) and ANZAC Day (every year) are the only 2 Big 4 games that have drawn 80,000+ dating back to the 2001 Carlton-Richmond Semi Final?

In that time, the 2001 Prelim (Ess V Haw) 2002 Prelim (Coll V Adel) 2006 Elimination Final (Coll V WB) 2007 round 15 and Prelim Final (Geel V Coll) and 2008 round 17 (Haw V Geel) games have all drawn 85,000+

If finals pricing was the massive issue, Geelong-Collingwood drew 98,000 to last years 1st Preliminary Final with thousands of MCC members locked outside, Geel-NM drew 78,000, Haw-NM drew 75,000 and this year Haw-WB drew 76,000. Granted all 4 games were allocated as Series Ticket games, but again finals pricing has been frozen for weeks 1 to 3 for both the 2007 and 2008 finals series, the ticket price excuse is a cop out IMO

Bizarre to suggest that 76k is disappointing, but it was down on estimates.
42k obviously well down for Bull v Swan game.

It is obvious it's a $ thing.
And for dogs it was a combination of being p'd off with their team as well.

If you are light on for cash but desperate to go a lot of people will hedge their bets, hope for a win and fork out the big bucks for week 3.

If the dogs or saints go thru to GF, you will spend, just for regular tix, about $340. If youve got a partner and kids double it and then some.

With petrol, food, rent and interest rate rises its a massive ask. Especially when you factor in parking, transport tix, food, the odd beer etc

Adelaide had the cheapest tickets of all venues for the finals

As for the Show, if thats the excuse then people must not have been able to move on the Saturday afternoon as it was packed that night as well, but to blame an event that runs for 10 days (although half the stuff was sold out by day 2 ) is a weak excuse

As for the local footy, the SANFL moved all their games, the finals affected a very small minority, if anything alot more people would be able to attend that would during the season

There were atleast 15,000 Crows members who didnt go, thats poor

Good point, perhaps we could have a whip around of cashed up West Coast fans and buy Norf?

I mean you arent worth much and we do have some spare time for a year or two before our team returns to its more traditional role of winning flags. Could try and move you to West Sydney and make a profit on the sale.

Thanks for the suggestion :thumbsu:

By the way, how did your mob go on the weekend?

These 2 games were crackers and you would be hard pressed to say you didn't get your monies worth.

Over the years so many have made the trek across the border to a real footy state, they love it :thumbsu:

No prize for second, oh wait yeah Silver :thumbsu:

We had a fairly good year with one more round and quite a few places above the West Cokes :thumbsu:

Just because the tickets were the cheapest, it doesn't make them cheap. It was still far too expensive for a family to go to the game. As an exaggerated example, everyone should be able to afford a Porsche Boxter, it's cheaper than all the other Porsches!

The show would have drawn away a small number of potential visitors, perhaps 5k. You say it's a ten day event, but that particular Saturday is the best day for kids to go (unless they get a school day off, differs from school to school) because Sunday is Fathers Day, and by the next weekend many of the animal attractions have already gone, and much is already sold out.

I said amateur league football, not the SANFL. I'm talking country league, local leagues, the kind that cannot move their games to another day, and where the participants would rather play in their own finals series than skip a big game to go to an overpriced AFL match in the big smoke. It's something that effects every Saturday afternoon game scheduled at AAMI stadium throughout the season.
