Your first Crows game

As a distraction from the Sando sacking/Cameron recruiting/Clarko and Bassett on board, what is the first Crows game you attended?

I watched a couple of pre-season games on TV in 1991, excited to see the new colours, and Scotty Hodges running around. And of course round 1 v Hawthorn (on TV).

The first game I attended was at Footy Park against Footscray. Adelaide got on top with a big 3rd quarter (from memory), and the "Here we go" was pumping through the speakers after each goal. Incredible atmosphere. The crowd was so into it (seemed amazing to a 15 year old).

Attending games was more a recent thing for me, partly because of age and partly because i don't come from a football family.

I can't remember who the opposition were, but I remember Shaun Rehn kicking a set shot check side for goal from maybe the Tony hall pocket?

Adelaide Crows vs West Coast Eagles - Round 10, 1996

I was 7 years old.

Sat in the members a few rows from the fence, behind the WCE dugout.

Night game (just checked, it was actually 5:40pm on a Sunday in the middle of winter! Not a new or favourable timeslot ;))

I remember the WCE banner congratulating Jason Ball on his 50th game.

I remember wanting to wave my mates Crows flag. When he finally did let me, I waved it in the middle of play, and got told off by the people behind me.

I remember a fat WCE supporting kid sitting on top of the concrete tunnel, saying something about some guy named Metropolis

I remember David Brown and Greg Anderson, probably because of their hair.

I remember I wasn't paying attention when Ricciuto destroyed Dean Kemp just inside 50 at the golf course end. Dad said it was a good bump.

I remember we lost.

Adelaide won by 1 point -

Lots of things I remember about this game, or more specifically.. the lead up to the game..

Firstly, we won the tickets on an SAFM promotion. They had a competition where you had to correctly guess Shaun Rehn's nickname to win a double pass....

My brother rang and got through - We didn't know what his nickname was then, so my brother guessed 'Stretch' - He got it wrong, but then they told him how to pick up his tickets for the game anyway....

I was stoked, we were going to go to a Crows game..!!!..

but then Mum said to me, 'radiojake, it was only two tickets, so it'll be either me or your Dad going with your brother'

I WAS ROPABLE... He was younger than me, not nearly into footy as much as me, and WAS A GEELONG SUPPORTER...

So then I got on the phone to ring SAFM the next time they called for callers, and somehow I got through too...

My guess for the nickname was 'Rehny', but I wasn't trying hard because I gathered getting it right wasn't a key part of the competition, just getting through... and then I got two tickets too! Bang.. 4 tickets to the game..

I remember going into the SAFM station to pick up the tickets, and the receptionist thought we were very lucky that we managed to both get through and get 2 tickets each...

There is only a couple of things I remember about the game -

I remember Rodney Maynard trying to pick up a loose ball near the boundry line only to fumble it onto his foot and he kicked it out of bounds on the full... I remember the collective groan around the ground that was something like "Oh Maynard...."

I remember David Pittman hitting the post to secure the behind that would be the last score of the game... I remember hearing everyone in the crowd just going 'Siren, Siren , Siren!!' to get the one point win.. I didn't understand why they wanted the game to finish though, I just wanted it to go on for ever! Ha..

But when the siren did go it was a pretty awesome roar from the Crowd...

Were you at the right end for Modra's 3rd quarter heroics?

I had training on the night of the first game, so rushed home to watch it on tv. The whole family went along to the next home game, which was a loss against Carlton :p. Hardly missed a game since (except for living interstate or overseas).
I think that Carlton game was my first live game as well.
Jon Dorotich kicked a bag from memory.

Crows V Essendon trial game at Footy park 1991. First away game i attended Crows V St Kilda, Morrabin 1991.

ouch

I'm pretty sure that was the first game that made me cry watching on TV...

I used to cry a bit when the Crows got hammered in the early days...

Heh - just remember the Adelaide v Essendon Rd 14 1992

Paul Salmon kicked 9 and Essendon kick 10 goals to 2 in the last quarter to run away with the win...

back then we'd listen to the radio coverage.. I remember starting to cry in the last quarter and Mum was like 'that's it, if you can't listen without crying, then the radio is going off' and she turned the radio off..

I begged her to put it back on and promised I wouldn't cry .. so she puts it back on and the first thing you hear is KG going ".. and Paul Salmon has kicked another goal and Essendon extend their lead.." and I burst out cryiing straight away again...

Radio was turned off for good :D

a little embarrassing.. but I was 7

I was 15 at My first game, it was the 1991 Trial game vs Essendon at Footy Park. 45,000 PLUS for a game in early February! Don't forget back in those days apart from the SANFL Grand Final and maybe SOO vs Victoria (you'd get 50,000), you never got more than 30-35,000 at Footy Park. We won by about 3 or 4 goals too.

My first Minor Round game was Round 2 1991 vs Carlton, we lost. I went to 8 games in the first season, and from then on my Dad and I have had season tickets/memberships.

I reckon out of the 292 Home games we have played at Football Park & Adelaide Oval, I have only missed about 20-25 games.

Haha, and from that day forth, you were to be known only as radiojake?

Mine was the Fosters Cup game v Geelong in 91. Think it was a 77-78 point win or something. I wasn't sure we would win, but then never looked liked losing it, much like round 1.

Completely different time and world of AFL back then. You couldn't and didn't see GC or GWS do anything like what the Crows and Eagles had done in their first outings. Remarkably different way of recruiting for the initial lists.
