Your greatest "new hope" that turned into a megaspud

John Georgiades owns this thread. 8 goals on debut, gone a few weeks later never to play again.

Tim Walsh is up there too - high draft pick, the "great white hope", career stats of 1 game, 1 kick, 1 goal.

There's a number of them, but the most prominent:
1. Adam Richardson-our great hope at full forward, built like a monster, killed it at SANFL level, but just couldn't make the grade. Although he was an early exponent of the sleeve tattoo, so he left some legacy.

2. Scott Hodges-Great player, just could not have been more disinterested and was way overshadowed by Modra's brilliance. Was always a Port boy, glad we sent him back there.

Strange as a Cat fan how these spud threads tend to also morph into 'Spuds that kill us'...as the names Hodges, James Cook, Cleve Hughes, Shannon Gibson attest, gawd even former Dog turned Docker then phantom in Daniel Hargreaves circa 1995!

For us, it could be argued that David Loats was meant to be some sort of rucking hope/forward in that strange early 2000's period before playing one forgettable game. Paul Chambers probably didn't carry too many hopes but he was a semi-regular before being sent to the Swans. Not sure if he was their Talisman of 2005, but he oddly 'retired' about 2/3 the way through 2005 therefore missing the Swan's biggest moment in 72 years.

Apparently with Rawlings, he was unhappy with the idea of living in Geelong and apparently rumour had it he wanted paid transport to and from his Melbourne home to play with us. Thank heavens we missed out...as we also missed out with feelers toward Ray Hall of the Tigers in that similar '03-'04 era.

Stephen Hooper Has to take the cake played 21 games for Geelong He was the number one draft pick of the 1990 draft. He made his debut on round 2 of 1991 and played a total of 21 games in the 1991 and 1993 seasons 0 Goals

Makes Jack Watts being Number 1 look like Genius

Andrejs Everitt. Shoulda hung onto that number Granty...

Adam Lange
Brent Lecras
David Trotter
David Hale
Rod Crowe
Dylan Smith
Callum Urch
Rod Tregenza

All potential superstars who did SFA. In all fairness to Hale, his one good game against Geelong allowed us to parlay him into the draft pick that landed us Kieran Harper. Thanks Hawks.

Special mention must go to Daniel McConnell who we picked up on the theory that he was being kept out of the Eagles line up by the likes of Cousins and Kerr so he must go alright. We traded him for picks 13 (Shannon Hurn) and 26 (Ben McKinley - proof that you can be f****d TWICE on the same deal).

Loved the rifleman... gave great service to the Cats.

As did Trevor Poole.

The Pres, eh, not so much

We didn't get Mark Neeld from any other club, but he was shit in a shit backline

TD, if memory serves me right, wasn't most the hype surrounding Lindner started by himself. Reckon he gave himself that nickname.

Also, what about Brian Peake - the hype around him was enormous, 3000 people were at Kardinia to see him arrive for his first training session by helicopter.

I'll throw in my 2 cents worth for possibe the number 1 hyped player that turned into a mega spud.

Rick Davies.
Superstar for Sturt in the SANFL.
Got 7 B & F's in 8 years.
One of SA's best ever.

Came to Hawthorn and spudded out 20 games.

Just before my time, my I do remember the hype and press at the time.

Went back to Sturt a couple of years later, superstar again

Will I have a fatwa issued against me if I say Lachie Hansen....
