I was in year 12 and the week leading up was the school holidays before the final exams. Back in those days there were a few BASS outlets that no one ever went to, one was the old Olympic Park offices next to the greyhound track car park. Managed to get concert tickets over the years when there were big queues at other places, so with no school on got the first train in to Richmond on Monday morning and thought “you bueaty, I’m first in line”. Started to get toey when no others showed up and I was the sole person there. A lady that showed up early for work at Olympic Park told me they weren’t doing Grand Final tickets, but assured me the BASS outlet at the Flinders Park (as it was known before Jeff renamed it Melbourne Park) was selling tickets for the game. Made it to the other end of Swan St in record time, but got a bit worried as although the queue wasn’t huge, I was going to be several people back. Around 15 minutes before tickets went on sale the BASS lady came and took everyone’s (North and Swans) memberships, went back behind the counter and at 10 seconds past 9am she announced “You’ve all been assured a seat”. Still remember the grumpy lady next to me grizzling “they better not be in the Olympic Stand, I don’t ever want to sit in the Olympic stand again” to me, expecting a sympathetic ear. I was just relived I hadn’t missed out!

Come Friday I went into the city for the parade. Still got the small paper from the next day with the front cover of Paul Kelly and Duck holding the cup up in front of the crowd, I can make myself out Where’s Wally style. The lady behind me was telling the person next to her how she had been Malcolm Blight’s date at the Brownlow on Monday and that he had picked her up in a limo – turned it around and it was Judy Francis. Even though he broke our heats 2 years later, Blighty still bleeds Blue and White.

Got to the game early on the Saturday as I knew a few of the guys running around in the Under 18 final. Loved the atmosphere of the car park on the way in with the BBQ’s and buzz. My seat ended up being the very back row of the southern stand, but I was bloody exited to be there. Sat through the seconds and joined the standing ovation Ross Smith got every time he kicked out from full back. A guy I played a bit of basketball with played for the * reserves that day as he was on their Supplementary List, said he knew they’d get smashed as North had a side as full strength as you can get in the two’s, where as * was fielding guys who made up the numbers at training due to a lot of the list being ineligible. Despite the pantsing, he said to get a kick on the G on GF day is something he’ll always treasure.

As for our game, not a lot I can add here that hasn’t already been said, although I never got really concerned when we got down early. In the 90s we had a team good enough that you felt we were never really out of it as we had so many come from behind wins. That said I was still nervous they were in it when O’Loughlin kicked a goal which still gave them a sniff, but our last few and the theme song chant bought on party time – and that last one from Flossy!

I still owe the RCH $4, I took 4 posters and in my excitement I forgot to pay for them. Only time I’ve ever shoplifted!

I remember driving from the King valley passing through Mansfield Yea and the Yarra Glen seeing a lot of dead Roos on the side of the road and thinking not a good sign . But then a particular song came on by Alanis morrisett come on the radio " ironic " . Every time I herd this song on the radio North would win 100% of the time :)

How about the memorabilia you bought after?

And somewhere are the scarves and blow up footies stuck to the seats (despite no trolleys like the tradies used being available back then)

Also found the 1999 Port with Pagan's scrawl on it. Number 3992.

Ah yes the 1996 grand final, what great memories.

The seas were rough that day my friends, as we made our way from Botany Bay. Swells as high as the tallest mountains rocked our ship as we sailed down the coast. I remember turning to the crew and pointing to clouds on the horizon forming into a big giant kangaroo, i knew then the premiership would be ours.

We finally made it into Port Phillip Bay as the seas subsided, the 140 knot winds turned into a gentle zephyr as we made our way into Port Melb. I caught the 11.30 stagecoach to Jolimont and met up with friends i was introduced to at the 94 World's Fair.

Twas a great time had by all.

Possibly Corey would have won it alone given he might have got a vote in the game he missed!

I think it says a lot about me as a teenager that I remember 98 more than 96&99 haha

Anyone who bought one of the players guernseys at the post match at Arden Street, I hate you. But PM me, we need to talk.

Another stupid memory from the day, the Whitman's Light Ship. Bring it back.

Watching the game again last night, I realised that if I could have one player in our 2017 team (aside from Carey), it would be Schwass. Hard, fast line breaker with a great left peg.
