He's a restricted free agent. so the Giants have 3 days to decide whether or not to match the bid. Compensation will be announced when they don't.

Smith was unrestricted.
I thought they generally make the compensation known first and then the team decides whether to match. Some reporting $750K and some reporting $800K, I'm not convinced that is enough for Band 1.

I want to congratulate GWS and their supporters, esp on this forum, for their gracious and classy response to Z-Will's departure. No bitterness or recriminations at all.

Mate we wish him all the best, understand why he is going. You’ve got a great clubman there.

How do they come up with Pick 10? Is it just an arbitrary "Mid-Round" magical conclusion they come to when the team concerned doesn't have an existing 1st rounder?

I posted this on the Brad Crouch thread but just incase some here might be interested as i was today and enlightened me to how this free agency compo system works.

Whilst Barret was ranting on about the pick #7 compo pick awarded to the bombers a guy rang up who seemed to know his sh!t about how it all worked out and referenced a article in 2018 in the age about how the Band 1 compo worked for a 3 year deal and it kind of made sense what he said.

Basically what he explained was that a 3 year deal that equates to the dollar figure that triggers the band 1 requirements gets awarded the Band 1 compo
e.g 3x$850k =$2.55 mil over 3 years at the age Daniher is at. But if Daniher had got a longer deal with a lower average dollar amount over the years would not get the same Band compo. Or if he was 1 year older then the 3 year deal would need to be higher again to get the same result. MIn 3 year required to activate a FA compo bid.

The stuff about it is all here, including a link to The Age article:

I'm pretty sure Barrett knows how it works. It's his job to know, and given his position in the middle of bloody everything at this time of year, he'd have to be actively avoiding it to not to have learned about it completely by accident at this point. So if he's ignorant, it's wilful ignorance. It is more likely that he chooses to speak about it in an obtuse manner for reasons known only to himself, than for him to actually not know.

Honestly he was going on like a tool then when the guy told him he was all flustered and mumbled his way eventually for i think it was the ex pies/crows list manager that bailed him out.

Good get for Carlton.
coin is big but if they rocket up the ladder next 2 years then he’ll be a major part of that.
Missed 25 games in the past 3 years and seems to get injured in game but play on semi hobbled a lot.
For Carltons sake let’s hope he’s on the field

Fantastic pick up for Carlton if he can stay on the park. The reported coin would concern me a bit with player retention surely being made difficult in a few years time though.

Couple Williams with Saad this trade period and I think you will be a genuine top 8 contender in the next year or two.

Yep, whether it’s 3 or 5 years makes no difference to the compo.

It’s the average salary. To be top 5% of paid players you’d think that would be $800k-$900k a season. Not unreasonable to think Zachs salary sits around the middle of that band. How many years did Carlton end up giving him?

Teams need to stop overpaying players. It doesn't lead to success, and if you are going to spend this kind of money and deal, you better be getting something better than a flanker. A proven midfielder or forward are the only players that should be commanding that coin.

6 years. Wow. Good on him. Young fella from Narrandera. What a legend

He told some funny stories during a mad Monday circa 2012. The year he played the aboriginal all stars.

Still don’t get the whinging about him being overpaid. He cost zero draft capital. If clubs could buy draft picks using cap space how much do you think a top 10 would pick cost?

Totally true - not to mention new draftees (from draft picks) are the cheapest form of player you can have on your list. So if you preserve high draft picks instead of trading them (who are in theory the most talented and most likely to succeed) - you'll have several years of cheap salary cap wise players to go with your high costing free agent. Then by the time the draftees start demanding more money, if you've front loaded your contracts then you'll be able to afford them.

This of course applies with lower draft picks too but obviously with much lower success rate.
