Reigning Crichton medalist Peter Wright has given Essendon Bombers fans a reason to celebrate ahead of round one, as he’s extended his commitment to the club for another four years. This new deal means the key forward will stay in the red and black until the end of 2027.
Since joining the Bombers through the 2020 trade period, the 26-year-old has had an impressive rise, with Gold Coast receiving a future fourth-round selection for the towering player. Wright’s breakout year was 2022, when he claimed the Crichton Medal as the club’s best and fairest player and the Matthew Lloyd Goal Kicking Award with 53 majors.
Standing at 203cm, Wright is a formidable challenge for opposition defenders. Last season, he scored multiple goals in 16 games, with a season-high of six goals during the Bombers’ round eight victory over Hawthorn.
Wright expressed his excitement about staying with the Bombers for another four years, acknowledging the support from his teammates, coaches, and the club’s direction under Brad.
Originally drafted from the Calder Cannons to Gold Coast with pick No. 8 in the 2014 National Draft, Wright played 63 games across six seasons with the Suns. Since arriving at The NEC Hangar, he has only missed three games in two seasons, bringing his career total to 109.
General Manager of List and Recruiting, Adrian Dodoro, praised Wright’s importance to the Bombers’ line-up, noting his strong marking, goal-kicking ability, dedication, and excellent work ethic. Dodoro believes Wright will play a key role in the young group’s progress in the coming years.
