Sometimes they get it wrong, in that final, he couldn't jump and could only run at half pace. Was that his fault?
I do agree that he does have some poor games and can bad but overall, he would be top 5 in the AFL for kf and relief ruck

On SM-G930F using BigFooty.com mobile app

He's not top 5 for FWD/Ruc. He's not top 20, he's not anywhere

He can't ruck at all. He's not in the group in the first place. He is a truly terrible, witches hat level ruckman

He's a straight forward in which way you cut it.

I'd like him to be more of a power forward but he's still effective playing as a really tall, stretch small forward

Yep, as soon as I accepted that his role had no ruck in it ... I was less angry about his performances. FFS a very raw Dear looked a better ruck option than JJ.

Look at our probable forward setup:

McGovern - Walker - Lynch
Betts - Jenkins - Menzel
With Cameron sliding in from the mid / wing.

Pretty strong setup, with a good mix of player types. Our full-forward is more mobile than most ... but tell me a full-forward who is good in the ruck? Roughy probably the only one I can think of that can play both of those positions at an elite level, and he is more of a midfielder than a ruck, he is also a freak. Tippett is more ruck-forward nowadays but he would be next cab off the rank ...

Look at the other full-forwards, tell me the ruckman of note amongst these:

ADE - Jenkins
BRI - Schache
CAR - Casboult
COL - Moore
ESS - Daniher
FRE - McCarthy
GEE - Hawkins
GCS - Lynch
GWS - Patton
MEL - Hogan
NTH - Brown / Daw / Waite
POR - Dixon
RIC - Riewoldt
StK - McCartin
SYD - Franklin
WCE - Kennedy
WB - Crameri

I wouldn't care if Jenkins was a non-entity at the ruck contests if he gave us something at ground level and around the ground when he's in there but he gives absolute donuts
I reckon McGovern would be a better 2R option!

It's a pity there's no room for Dear in the set up as he's a good option in the ruck but our other tall forwards are way too good to consider leaving out and a Jenkins, Dear, Walker, Lynch, McGovern combo wayyyyyyy too top heavy.

I'd be happy with Jenkins the Ruckman from his first season here. Was quite a bit better than he is now. Has got worse every season, like Tippett did in the ruck when he was here.

There's no reason Jenkins shouldn't be decent - height, leap, frame. Plus should be able to burn off his opponent with ease around the ground.

Just need to somehow un-Clarke him to get him back on track.

So, two games into the pre-season, we are starting to see who is shaping as filling the void in the midfield, and how muchhe side is starting to shape up.

Couple of observations thus far;

1. We are building some quality depth on each line. Not superstar quality, but enough gg to ensure someone can come in and do a job.
2. Hampton is best 22 and has the qualities to become an A Grade midfielder, with time and exposure.
3. Rat looks to be heading to another level and has superstar written all over him. What a bargain at 81. Without the sanctions, would have we taken the punt?
4. Greenwood not at the level yet
5. M Crouch will be a gun inside mid for years to come. His disposal looks better and his vision in traffic is elite already just needs to make sure he doesn't bite off too much
6. Cameron could explode this year
7. I'm still on the Menzel bandwagon, but needs a big JLT3 to press his claims
8. Riley Knight has some work to do to be starting 22 based on yesterday's game.
7. Gooch looks OK, but I'm still not sold yet
8. Poholke looks like there is something to work with. A year in SANFL bashing and crashing with the big bodies will be invaluable.
9. Wigg looks to have something. Will get a chance at some stage this year I reckon. Just needs to compose himself as has the footskills to succeed
10. When we move the ball quickly we will be hard to stop. We will be quicker this year with added speed.
Mackay/Douglas - living on the edge. Might see a couple zoom past them this year

It's almost as if we have some sort of ruck-coach deficiency.

6. Midfield time

10. Agree. Living on the edge indeed.

Haha - that will teach me to compose a post whilst at lunch, on my phone, and being distracted by scantily clad women walking past!

I dunno if this is the right equation seeing half of them don't ruck.

This would have been better if it was a 20 hit outs/20 goal thing.

I do reckon you'd find Jenkins in the top 5 of kpf/rucks but that's more there really aren't many good ones going around.

But that is the point ... he isn't a ruckman, so compare him to the other full forwards. Stop using "ruck" and "Josh Jenkins" in the same sentence, unless you also include "isn't" in there somewhere..

Isn't Josh Jenkins our 2nd ruckman?

Isn't Josh Jenkins our 2nd ruckman?
He is not a ruckman in any sense of the word, that is the point. Having him stand in the ruck is not productive, in any way.

Unless there is some magical transformation on the horizon that we haven't seen an inkling of yet, JJ is a mobile forward ... and a good one at that.

We have one ruckman. End of story.

My guess is the latter
Surely it's NEO?

That makes sense though #81 is ironic, gives a sense of getting one over every other club (even if we were forced to do something like that).

Was just about to break out the Matrix movies to check... :)

He is a ruckman due to the fact he is playing a 2nd ruck role, and needs to be compared as such. Doesn't matter how highly you rate him as a ruck, he is playing it in our set up.

All comparing a Jenkins with someone like Kennedy is doing is wasting your time.

#81 would be a good nickname.

He only fell to 81 because of perceived "issues"...

Atkins, who before his draft year had even been considered a future first-round pick, had to wait until selection 81 to hear his name called. Only one other player was taken as a non-elevated rookie after him — key defender Sean Gregory by Essendon at No. 88. Before Atkins even had time to pack his bags to head to Adelaide, which instantly felt it had pulled off a draft day steal, the conspiracy theories started. Why had such a talented player fallen so far down the draft pecking order? Word had spread that Atkins, who had lost his spot at the AIS-AFL Academy the previous year, had lacked the professionalism of some of his fellow draftees. Even Crows national recruiting manager Hamish Ogilvie — the man who was as shocked as anyone to secure such a good talent so deep in the draft — questioned Atkins’ professionalism and attitude. His talent and love for football were never question marks,’’ said Ogilvie, whose club had only days before the draft lost its first and second-round draft picks as part of AFL sanctions over the Kurt Tippett salary cap affair. “But he was one of those typically talented kids who perhaps hadn’t learnt to work as hard as he could have. “We certainly had him ranked a lot higher and were really surprised that we were able to get him at 81. “It was a really good draft so someone was always going to slide out and it was really good value for us because apart from Rory’s talent he had some personality, character and spunk — they were all things we liked’’

I thought Jenkins's ruck improved greatly last year, in previous years when sauce went to the bench the opposition would start peppering the goals until he came back on, but last year I felt like JJ at least broke even against most ruckmen and that's about as much as you can ask for from a part timer. It's probably too much to expect your backup guy to be winning contests, if he is making it so the opposition don't get easy wins then he is doing his job.
