I didn't mean best in sanfl dominant... but he should be regularly in the best players.

Has he ever been in the best players?

Surely you would be expecting more from him...
Yes I'd like to see more. I got the impression that you expected him to be dominant when you said he should be dominant.

Well, yes I expect him to be dominant in some games to make our best players list.

I can't recall any game where this has been the case, which is very disappointing.

Was passable in our 1st year where he was rushed into the AFL side, but has regressed... which is a major concern.

He's behind Butts, Frampton, Murray and sounds like even Borlase at this stage. All of which have many years of football ahead of them. From a list management perspective, you can't just hoard KPDs all of a similar age... it's not looking good for fish

How many years more do some want to give this kid? Thank god for Butts otherwise we’d be getting belted week in week out. It was an absolute cockup that we drafted this guy at pick 6, not the kids fault but the clubs fault.

Realistically, probably this year and next. This is his third year on the list, it's around the time you would expect a KPD to start to contribute at AFL level. If we get to the end of next year and he's still not demanding a starting spot, it will probably be time to throw in the towel.

Jeremy McGovern was drafted in 2011 and didn’t make his debut til 2014.

We have time, he will at the very least see out the end of his contract. That’s pretty much 2 seasons to make a call.

Well the good ones are rarely still playing in the SANFL/WAFL/VFL at 21.

Of the 1st round Tall defenders taken in Fischer McAsey's draft and since he's the only one not to have played AFL this year.
All of Josh Gibcus, Denver Grainger-Barras, Sam De Koning and Heath Chapman have.

Edit :
I might add McAsey is significantly more developed physically and heavier than the other lads also.
I'm concerned his issues are mental not physical.

I'm concerned they're physical. Doesn't have speed, doesn't have size etc. You can hit the weights all you want but you still need the underlying genetics. That's the problem with drafting 18-year-olds, you're not seeing their final physical form.
Yet he did ok in his 1st year in the AFL & has regressed. That can't be for physical reasons.

From memory he was getting smashed every week but also in a year we won the wooden spoon so...probably thrown to the wolves too early and couldn't of done anything good for his confidence...honestly we haven't seen him in almost 2 years, its pretty bad signs this kid wont make it.

We win some we lose some. That is life. We got Butts at pick 39 in the rookie draft. To get a key defender of his quality at that pick is an awesome draft steal. We got Frampton for virtually nothing (future fourth round pick). If our back six keep developing as they are showing,we got the two key talls in this mix for basically nothing. I think that can help us to keep a bit of perspective.

What got him drafted originally and as high as he was? By that i mean what about him did we really like. Whatever it was it does not just vanish..he can play but is just taking longer to translate that skillset to AFL level.

I hope we can afford to play the long game with him as he was obviously highly talented as a junior and it would be great to see him eventually make it as a quality AFL defender. I live in hope

De Koning looks a ripper

I thought he was taken in the rookie draft prior but not according to footywire

He was taken in the 2011 rookie draft, which is part of the 2010 draft. I.e. he was drafted in the 2010 calendar year

Look don’t get me wrong, I’d be ecstatic if he makes it and has a huge career with us, just as I would be for any Crows player as I want to win flags.

But I’m just not seeing it in him. Let’s hope he does prove me wrong.
Yeah I'm a fan but even I know he's miles off it. That 2nd KPD spot is open though as Murray hasn't locked it down and Frampton is still unpredictable

This is a great point.

Yes it's disappointing that we may have blown our chance at an elite relent with pick 6: but uf Butts and Frampton continue their development as our KPFs that is an absolute bonus given what we paid.

People carrying on like no other club has burned a high draft pick on a talent that didn't eventuate in AFL footy.

I’m still holding out hope for McAsey. He’s just turned 21.

If a 22 year old Chayce Jones has taught us anything, sometimes it takes a number of years to develop a body that can compete at AFL level.

The draft is and always will be a lottery. Anyone who thinks it's an exact science needs a re-think.

All clubs have history of busts and gems and this will always be the case. Nobody has a crystal ball.

I'm 45 and I still haven't gotten there yet.

It seem's silly to write off a KPD young player who had an interrupted preseason, especially considering that he's got an extra year on his contract anyway. May as-well hold the faith.

My concern with McAsey is that his weaknesses make it impossible to properly use his strengths.

He reads the ball well in flight and is a good mark, but he moves too slow to get to the drop of the ball a lot of the time and when he does get a contested mark, he often falls over preventing the quick slingshot.

He has good disposal but he struggles to get his hands on the ball to use it.

He is a good size to wrestle, but gets killed on the lead.

He was tracking as a good swing man but hasn't proven he can do either well.

He had good footy IQ, but doesn't seem as mentally switched on as when he was drafted (probably due to other external factors that people have mentioned).

I really hope he turns it around and we look back and wonder what we were worrying about, but I'm struggling to see it.
