Review 2024 Season Review - The Goodest, Baddest and Ugliest from the season

It will be interesting to see if West Coast has much luck. There doesn’t appear to be a heap of people interested in coaching them. They are arguably the best resources club in the league and there doesn’t appear to be much of a line up!
I havent followed too closely - and have always had Cox as favourite despite him saying he wasnt interested - but are they waiting for a coach to finish up or are there genuinely no takers?

Good -
  • The continued improvement of our young kids. Soligo, Max, Worrell, Rankine, Nank, Rachele, Dowling, Taylor all very good this year.
  • Thilthorpe looked great when he finally came back into the side. He will take his game to another level next year if he can stay fit. Will be massive for us next year.
  • Rankine looks like that elite A grade mid we have been craving for years.
  • Fog had a solid year and looks ready to take the number 1 spot next year. He still has some quiet games, but has improved his output and involvement in games.
  • Keays and Sholl both had really good years and have out performed what most expected from them.
  • Bond looked solid when he came into the side.

Bad
  • The form our our senior players - Tex, Smith, Laird have all fallen off a cliff, the end has come quickly and we now need to transition these guys out of the team quickly.
  • Luke Pedlar's year, I had so much hope for him taking that next step and he has not fired a shot in 2024.
  • Our run with injuries this year has not been great.
  • Our lack of depth, which has been exposed with our injuries.
  • Our severe lack of ruck depth. Still no developing ruck. We now need to bring in a new main ruck, a new back up and a new developing ruck.
  • The handling of Curtin. Nicks couldn't have treated this kid worse if he tried. If he isn't ready then leave him in the SANFL. If he is ready then he should be in the team. The fact that he was sub or subbed out on so many occasions is terrible for his development and his confidence.
  • The handling of Rachele's public axing and the way the club threw him under the bus. This all could have been managed in house and didn't need to be played out in the media
Ugly
  • Nicks getting extended for 2 more years
  • Murphy continuing to get selected
  • Laird publicly throwing his team mate under the bus
  • Our game style for the first 4 weeks of the season
  • Going into the draft with pick 4 and the same recruitment team

Does Shuttleworth run our media messaging still? Is he the worst media specialist in the AFL? We always seem to have things get blown up way out of proportion due to how poorly we manage our media.
This last week perfect example - Laird dumps Rankine on radio - Nicks comes out and says he is dropped for a bit of everything, then Dawson pretty much says it was just because of the Showdown comments.

Do we actually have someone organise this stuff - I could do a better job while still working my current job!

Yes with Reece Homfray under him doing a lot of the coordination

Like when Nicks said it wasn't the celebration, and then Rach comes out and apologises for the celebration and admits it's his fault...

I disagree about Tex with zero conviction but regardless Nicks said last night we haven't decided... how does someone as important as Tex not at least get a send off. The ugliest thing in this very ugly season

If he worn retire it's pretty hard to give him a send off game. The club has so far done the right thing by seeing out the season, now just need to wait for trade week and see what the list looks like after that and how we think we best use our picks.

The adelaide boys club full of old money from the Adelside club on north terrace is well and truly alive.

They have a real problem of disengagement from current members as well as the next generation!

The internal focused club has moved away from inclusiveness to be back patting and self preservationist.

Reminds me of our current government actually!

Agree with no accountability and no actual people in place to invoke change.

The board and footy departments are made up of mates of mates it stinks really bad.

People lost faith in supporting this club and don’t see succcess anytime soon! This will be mediocrity for a while now.

There will not be change due to the deep infiltration of the boys club.

The first step is to actually bring in successful professionals that are NOT linked to the current crop

Presume you're referring to federal labor, otherwise bit harsh on Pete's govt.

GOOD
Rankine on his way to being a generational mid/fwd
Backbone as a group held up and proved you don't need old players for the sake of it
TT's return

BAD
Pedlar not getting going at all
Schoey, Jones & NcHenry all hope is lost or near lost
TT and Rankine injuries
Selection on average
Reverting to Crouch

UGLY
Coach extension
Murphy
Laird
Smith
Kelly still employed

Good
Jordon Butts and Lachie Sholl both elevated themselves

Butts looked fit and moved much better.

Sholl stayed in games, covered an enormous amount of ground, didn't routinely get rag-dolled and didn't hit the wall at Round 9 like usual.

Lessons learned from the season:
  1. Extending Nicks was a mistake. He is a poor game day coach, implemented a game plan that made us worse than last year, continues to make baffling decisions on the regular, is poor at developing players and takes no responsibility for his own performances

  2. We have little to no on field leadership. Our leadership group is a joke and has been selected with a priority for off field standards instead of leading on game day

  3. The senior experience we backed in way back in 2020 are actually poor leaders and have fallen off sooner than expected, leaving us devoid of useful leadership and players that set a good standard for those we need to be developing

  4. The club has failed to adequately plan for the future, leaving us with a list that is still very inexperienced as the older players start to drop away and retire. This includes a failure to prioritize younger players, a failure to play them in positions that best develop them, and a failure to build the list into a decent position 5 years into a rebuild.

  5. The club drank its own bathwater believing we'd easily make finals after last season. Our messaging at the start of the season got ahead of ourselves and was arrogant.

  6. The club continues to lie to members and manipulate messaging, creating false narratives about our poor position, our injury list this year and state of the rebuild. The club is unwilling to take responsibility for finishing 15th seven years after last making finals.

  7. We have decent younger players that have been held back through poor development, coaching and leadership. Players such as Zac Taylor and Billy Dowling debuted too late into the season. We didn't realize Dan Curtin wasn't a key defender until 3/4 of the way into the year, and when we did play him we severely and unfairly limited his time on ground. We threw Josh Rachele under the bus in the media.

  8. Despite having some decent youngsters, an almost decade long wasteland of drafting and development continues to hurt us and we lack quality in many areas on the ground.

  9. Our club is too insular and self protecting to admit we got various things wrong (including selection of coaches, list management, football staff) and make changes that will put us on a path towards a premiership. They are yet to even admit the season as a whole has been a disaster and below expectations, instead shifting the goal posts claiming we got unlucky with injuries. We have far too many key staff members that think their own ability in their position is far greater than it really is.

  10. We fail and shrink when there is expectation on the club to perform and win. This is not a good sign for the group performing in finals, if we ever make it there.

  11. Nicks seems to have not actually solved the club's cultural problems. The way the club and especially senior players threw Rachele under the bus was disgraceful and not indicative of a strong team first culture. We are continuing to set double standards between senior players and junior players, particularly around selection and performance standards on game day. Our player retention issues seem to have been solved more through dollars than turning the culture around and making us a club players want to play for.
Cannot disagree with any point.

Ugly

There is only 1 ugly. This is the ugly tree. Every other ugly is merely a branch of the ugly tree.

The ugly tree is resigning nicks for 2 more years

Despite chorus of supporters not convinced by “almost making finals” as some sort of achievement.

“Players seem to like him” is not a kpi to base a decision around, and sounds like it’s not true anyway.

If he hadn’t been resigned, would he have the job still?

Or would we be casting our net far and wide like West Coast for Cox, Buckley, Dew, anyone who would give us some hope. But instead it’s going to be more of the same expecting better results.

I sincerely hope there was this rumoured win trigger that he could not have met and we can send him on his way.
I think the Ugly tree is Roo.
Everything he touches turns into
jurassic park deal with it GIF

Curtin, Daniel3 + 4 subs19yr 5mthFor the club - F
For the player: C You were shafted and treated like dirt. With luck a new coach will know how to treat class.
Ryan, Oscar019yr 3mthNA Apologies for being drafted by a club that rated Ned McHenry above you.
Edwards, Charlie019yr 3mthNA As above

The Good:
  • Gaining pick 4 in what looks like a strong midfielders draft, is exactly what we've needed since we lost Dangerfield. By default, we may finally address this need.
  • Solid seasons from Fogarty, Soligo, Keays, Sholl, Dawson, Crouch, Michalanney, Hinge.
  • Enough seen from Rankine, Thilthorpe, Worrell and Murray to suggest this group will influence further with more game time in 2025.

The Bad:
  • Enough seen from Smith, Laird, Berry, Keane, Jones, McHenry, Murphy, O'Brien, Strachan, Himmelberg, Gollant and Burgess to bring in some trade capital or move on. We were slow in doing this in 2018/19 which brought us the pain of 2020. If we persist with this group or don't make the most of some of the value we have in terms of trade capital, we'll remain stagnant.
  • The injury to Thilthorpe just before the season proper and being hampered by the 2023 injuries to Murray and Butts.
  • The lack of emergence of Gollant, Himmelberg, Pedlar and Jones in particular.
  • The question marks still over Rachele, Curtin and to a lesser extent Thilthorpe, on the back of poor first round recruiting by our current list managers over the past decade. Or is it the coaching/development?
  • The season being over so quickly after 2023 showing promise and on the back of no finals since 2017.

The Ugly
  • Signing Nicks up for 2 years early in the season. It removed any possibility of genuinely looking for a replacement for season 2025 if the club felt that was the way to go.
  • The exposure of our list management, recruitment, football department in signing Nicks at the time they did and then the club falling in a heap by half way through the season.
  • If 2025 doesn't go well, I'm not sure we've seen the beginning of ugly. Adelaide supporters are sick of losing. We shouldn't need a decade to rebuild.

The rating points really don’t like Max, or are we just biased here.
I know he had a few ordinary games this year, but he feels just so dependable most game.
Rating points don't capture defensive ability very well, but no stat does really.

With that said my impression is that Bond is better defensively than Max already.

I think Max is doing fine for 19 years old. Mitch Hinge is 25 this year and has taken his time to develop. Luke Nankervis feels newer but is 20 this year.

Hopefully we will see Max's intercept and attacking game develop each year as that seems to be his strength to me.

Hes lower than every defender we have including butts, who I would have thought would be our lowest ranked.

Im not sure if kulak is using fantasy points, raw CD points or SuperCoach points .
I assume they are fantasy points which are basically k/m/h points.
SuperCoach points include disposal, pressure acts , interceptions , shepherds , contested marks and game scaling points
awarded higher depending on time of game they earned points . It’s is quite complex the point system that clubs request.
Can’t remember the lad think Crows v Freo . Ben Keays snapped what looked like a match winning goal with a few seconds on the clock. A lad in his first game or two got a fantastic spoil on the goal line to give Freo the win.
He got 18 points for that spoil in SC rather than none in other formats.
Max does earn SC points from his great pressure
Kick ins and subbed game points need to be removed .

He doesn’t rate in interlopers thread of ratings either. (Think these may be the same point system?)
