Fogerty looks to have upside in potential. I have always posited that kids (and I know he is not a kid now) that make elite levels and are not fully developed physically (i.e. carrying a little puppy fat or higher skin folds) have a big upside if they can do the work required to improve their build. I see Fogarty as one of those types. He still appears to be physically 'off peak' and could build his frame to be anything. He is one worth exploring....

As long we don't Overpay

Why would Lewis come to us?
  • He's in a developing team like us
  • He'll be well paid
  • Probably get a good amount of years
  • Respected by the club that drafted him
Unless a KPP is at an interstate team and wants to come "home", wants a lot more money, or is in a local team that looks like being ordinary for many years, they tend to stay where they are.

Yeah it’s definitely a long shot.

He seemed to be struggling to hold his place last year so the key is to find that type that is struggling to hold his place this year and provide that opportunity.

If McKay is good enough - I think I've only watched about 3 Nth games in the last 5 years - you'd leave Murphy out for a small.

I think McKay has become a good quality KPD, especially given he has been in a backline of a team that doesn't support their defenders too much, he's turned himself into a real hard defender to play on imo. Great size, reads the play well and rarely gets beaten 1v1, playing in a back 6 consisting of Moore, Howe, Maynard, IQ and a midfield that actually pressures the opposition on their disposal i50 and I think he would improve even further. I think in terms of KPP's that are potentially on the market, he is the best of them. I don't see Mitch Lewis being available, and McKay as a defender has more appeal than McStay as a forward imho.

My main concern (aside from if he is actually available) is what would he cost? 24yo, quality KPD's don't just fall out of a tree and especially ones that were drafted in the first round. In saying that though, KPD's seem to be undervalued when it comes to player movement, unless they are "superstar" standard like a Darcy Moore, Jacob Weitering caliber, so what could North realistically ask?

I wouldnt chase a best 22 KPD. Current set up, Dean as depth. Depending on how we rate Kelly and Macmahon depends on whether we draft more kids.

I tend to agree that our backline seems to have enough of the pieces there, though like you mention it will be determined by the growth of Dean, Kelly and McMahon. If they don't develop in the way the club hope, we could be left with a serious hole in the KPD stables, which McKay would fill perfectly.

I have always been of the opinion though of not chasing a player, for the sake of chasing a player (KPP or not). If we felt that way inclined (of bolstering our KP stocks) than to me McKay is the best that could be realistically on the table, otherwise I would prefer we continue to draft quality youngsters and develop from within.

Yet to be seen. Wish him all the best, hope he becomes a great player. But depth in KP spots in essential, and competition for spots is important for growth. Another ~200cm KPD can't be bad.

Not sure you can have this discussion and exclude McMahon and Kelly. I look forward to seeing what Dean offers but we currently have these 2 building form which imho is encouraging.

Cost is an issue. We don’t really have tradable depth and North wont want future picks. I want to head to the draft this year, but if we play finals and have a pick outside the top 10, should we trade to improve the team immediately?

We’ll have a good idea of our biggest need come the end of the season. I still think it’s an inside mid short term, and obviously key position players long term. We’re a much better team than I thought, as evidenced by our form against the top 6. If we feel we have the list to have a crack at a flag, I’d love to trade for an inside mid like Hopper.

Shame we can’t have them all

He’s a free agent at the end of 2023. As is his brother. That’s when we should look to chase him and/or his brother if the players we’ve already got don’t come on as hoped.

McKay is a free agent next year

I might have missed this being addressed, but Lewis enters FA in 2024. Although the delay in him re-signing is becoming more curious as time goes by.
I wonder where Clarkson will be coaching next year?

As our pick crawls outside the top 10 by the week, lets play a hypothetical game.

EG we end up with pick 12-14... and we identify a key fwd as a list need but we don't think the one we want to draft will be available at pick 12-14.

Who around the comp is a likely trade target with our say pick 12?

I'll start:

Jamarra Ugle-Hagan?

Ben King?

Mitch Lewis?

Nick Larkey?

Todd Marshall?

Logan McDonald?

You’d have to chuck in a player as well to swing this.
And none are really likely.

Best chance would be Jamara Ugly-Bogan for pick 12 + Darcy Cameron.

We don’t need a pick to get McStay.

Not Really Sure. McLean is 1 I liked last year but doubt he leaves now
I quite like him from the snippets I've seen. He hasn't played the last month. Don't know if it's injury or having better players ahead of him. He might not want to stay if Buddy goes around again, as it'll be a really tough team for him to get back into.

I’ve been big on trying to bring Highmore across but I’m wondering at the moment if he’d be in front of Murphy. I’d still do the deal because I have doubts on Murphy from a durability perspective. But I’ve gotta say I’ve been so impressed with Murphy the last month.

A tall defender to support Moore and allow him to be more aggressive whilst also allowing Howe to play smaller and Murphy to retain that third tall role is what we need. Such a shame Dean got injured at the time as 13 games into him right now could have been handy.

I'd like to see how Murphy finishes the season. His last 3 weeks have been amazing and encouraging. The next step for him is to string some games together and show he can do it over time. Hell he'd be an inspiration to Krueger if he can do that. Very similar kamizaze injury histories. It gives me hope.

McLeans season highlights from last year didn't excite me too much. Best goal average is ~1.2 also (10 goals, 8 games). It's a brief look at highlights/stats so could well be missing something.

We should target Tim Taranto. GWS don't need him. Would cost the earth, but probably worth it, for mine.
