I hate the random switch from what is correctly singular to the plural.

So when discussing, say, the Western TM when people say none of them are any good, my blood actually boils. It should, no MUST, be none of them is any good.

I will expand.

I worked with someone whose speech caused me pain. And his halitosis but that is a separate matter.

He had no understanding of singular and plural whatsoever. He kept saying “the staff are angry”. No no no. I explained that it must be the staff is angry, or if he must have a plural then “the members of staff are angry”.

He didn’t get it at all. He said but that’s ****ing dumb. I said “you’re an inanimate object” and we pretty much left it there.

Don’t get me started on that weird thing Topkent does where he has this phase of substituting an for and. It doesn’t even annoy me now, but it makes me shake my head at the standards we permit in this day and age.
