I remember someone saying they had to understand Sun Ra before they could figure out Coltrane. Their reasoning was they wanted to know where they went before they could see how they got there. It made a lot of sense to me. I also started out with the far out jazz stuff before something like A Love Supreme made any sense. I'm the same with Classical music I think, modern, contemporary stuff whether it's really minimal or mixes electronic elements is just so much easier to digest than traditional stuff.

Anyway, this Shosta guy sounds awesome. Can you recommend something from him? The more dissonance, and the more dangerous the better :)
I’ll do that.

I also agree with the someone you refer to about Robbie Coltrane. When I first heard Coltrane I didn’t get it at all. I stuck at it because he is famous and I figured all of the people who love him can’t all be wrong. Was worth going back in time to understand the influences.

This technique doesn’t always work. Maybe I had more time to make the effort back then.

Love this music: although Rieu's version is passable only.

Good pick! Gets the thing of taking a waltz tune and making it a bit sinister.

I reckon I can find something more typical and super angry and bitter. I’ll go searching.

I’ve found a good performance of Shostakovich 8th string quartet which is the best example I think of his style.

It is 25 minutes of watching and listening, but fast forward works in this piece pretty well because he sticks with one theme per movement

If there is a theme here it goes:

1st Movement - relentlessly sad, grim, very beautiful but hard to take
2nd - remember the death camps? The gun shots? That sucked balls
3rd Movement - let’s take a traditional waltz style but make it really crazy and sinister in turns
4th movement - basically a mirror of the first movement. Life comes around and goes around and it always ends up sad and shit.

Interesting fact - If you stole all the instruments on that stage and managed to sell them at RRP, you would be at least 10 million dollars (US) richer.

Other interesting fact - if you steal the cello that was played by Rostropovich, I recon RRP for that one cello would be around 20 million dollars US

Mind-boggling

Excellent, thanks for that, I've got an old guitar you can have for $25.00, free postage! Another string quartet playing Kashmir.
