I don't think so.

A broken down Bruce would be just as likely to kick four against a team with no defenders who refuse to defend all over the ground.
Bruce barely led all game. Lobb presented constantly. Chalk and cheese.

Bruce’s games have been horrid. He’s allowed an out because of the ACL so it’s not directed at him but he simply shouldn’t be playing. The argument (that even I subscribed to) that he was important for structure is now irrelevant because teams are now putting the second defender to Jamarra.

Lobb played a great game and I think is a better player than a fully fit Bruce but we didn't lose comfortably because we were a quality tall forward short. We lost comfortably because no one defended and they walked the ball from full back to full forward with no one even attempting to get close to a man. We've seen how Lobb plays when the game isn't on Freo's terms as well.

I don’t believe the man on the mark would make one iota of difference as our system is broken. It isn’t helped by having someone either standing or not standing on a mark.

Anyway, agree to disagree. Not going to get into a non classy, insulting slinging match with emotionally charged people.
You already have. How about you move on.

The team sitting second on the ladder does it too. Works for them.
No they don’t 😂

There’s been one major change in the past 6 years to our team defence, one. Doesn’t take a flipping genius to work it out

As I mentioned in the game day thread 37 points doesn’t sound like a lot but that doesn’t take into account the times they go end to end but don’t score but then have the ball in their attacking 50 where it’s obviously easier to set up and keep it in for repeat shots on goal.

This is killing us.

Also to add to this, it’s even worse for us because we’ve traditionally played a territory game where we only score with repeat entries and shot after shot after shot on goal, which also protects our biggest weakness - our backline - by keeping the ball out of their for longer periods, but now we don’t get that because we allow the opposition to waltz down the field. Even if Collingwood did do it - which they don’t- it may work for them as they have a gun intercept defender and strong small defenders too. We don’t.

There’s more issues than this but this is the single, most pressing issue with our game and it’s a flipping easy fix

Our tall defenders have shit the bed all year and our inside 50s have been diabolical and causing us to leak goals the other way.

While Lewis Young and especially Lipinski have carved out roles for themselves for teams that will both likely play finals while we don’t.

Hurts a bit.

List management wise I want Lobb & I want Jones, not as the saviours but they straighten us up a bit and improve our list. I want to keep Dunks too but other than that I don’t think we need to make drastic changes list wise.

It’s obvious our changes need to be off field. Another year into Darcy and Jamarra, Lobb into Bruce’s spot and Jones into Gardners/Cordys spot and the team can compete. Another year into English too who was really good tonight even in parts of the game he’s traditionally struggled.

I’m happy to improve the list and hit the draft - this list can compete next year. But **** me we can’t if we don’t drastically rebuild our style of play.

You could bring in Steven May, Harry McKay and Sean Darcy to this list and we would still miss finals with this shit gameplan. Tbh though I think we will struggle to attract any talent if they know they'll be coached by the likes of Matthew Spangher.

They’ve both got weaknesses in their games sure but they’ve found themselves clubs who appreciate their strengths and try to play them in roles which suit and hide their weaknesses. Whereas we can’t do that because we only value players who provide a bit of run & pressure as a strength and if you don’t do that you have to be able to play every position on the ground perfectly. Such a flawed concept whilst every team is going towards finding specialist roles for niche players we’ve gone the opposite way in building a list of nothing players who do everything okay but nothing great

I really really want to keep Dunkley and get Lobb.
Swap Bruce for Lobb and we just about win that. A forward who actually leads.

0 change in results. We need to recruit Selection integrity, 2 way running, a plan b, etc before worrying about Lobb or Dunkley.

Completely agree, as I said our changes need to be off field and that’s drastic. But actual list management wise I’m happy to improve the side cheaply (which Lobb & Jones do) without doing anything drastic, but like you said it won’t even make a difference if we don’t rebuild the way we play - I don’t think it’ll take 5 years, I think we can pivot this list in a year or two like Melbourne has, if we made the right decisions but tbf it just probably won’t happen

Delist Toby because he isn’t in the top 10 players any more....

Umm what.

At least we won’t have a bottom 6 at AFL level anymore considering 75% of the list would be disposed of.

Overreactions are the worst things clubs can do after a GF loss. Our defensive structures for starters and at a more extreme level Adelaide training camps.

Getting rid of 8 players isn't an overreaction (which is what the previous poster suggested), the AFL average is 7 changes to the list. We got rid of 6 players last year, so we would be on the average over the last 2 years.

We got rid of 11 players in 2014 and we got 6 premiership players plus Dale in that year.
We got rid of 12 players in 2020 and made a grand final in 2021. We even re listed Cavarra and Hayes that year who did nothing.

Making some decent changes to the list isn't the worst thing.

Are we sure Bailey Smith is good? One of the worst kicks in the league and offers nothing defensively. Dunks any day of the week over him.

Bruce isn't a ruckman. After half time, he played forward only, had 3 shots at goal, competed, threw his weight around, nowhere near his 2021 form but at least he played his role. 11 Disposals, 6 Marks, 1 goal 1, not too bad for a bloke a number don't want ever to play again. Weightman aside, nobody on the forward line scrapped for it nor applied pressure on defenders waltzing out and spotting up Mundy and his ilk on the wing with more real estate around them than a Qld cattle station. Generally, the forwards gathered at the top of the square waving their arms in the air, easy picking for intercept defenders. Naughton won't take marks leading away from the ball.. Darcy earned his spot for next week.
