Oppo Camp Oliver Henry (Traded to Geelong 2022)

He shouldn't take the easy way out, he should stay and fight for his position. He understands he is still developing. He just gotta chip away at his craft. Needs to be patient.

I'm not saying WHE wont get one, but probably post trade period, once we they get the priorities out of the way and see who comes in, and how mjuch $ is left. But he clearly isn't a priority at this point. Nor should be be at his age.

I agree with you that Henry should stay, fight, improve and force his way into our Best 22.

But why hasn’t he signed? Every other player of his age or thereabouts on our list has jumped at the chance to re-sign. But not Ollie.

Always have time for WHE. He reminds me, in looks, of a much smaller version of Len Thompson. Admittedly, that is currently through a set of beer goggles.

Hmmm. I’m not seeing it. Even with Thomo being lopsided. It might be more than beer.😛

I don’t disagree with you about Henry’s talent - I just doubt that he’ll willing to bide his time in the VFL to work on his tank and pressure which are not up to scratch. I think asking to be traded to Geelong to play with his brother is an easy option for him and he’d be a strong chance to replace Gary Rohan next year. I hope he stays but reckon he’d have already signed by now.

Do you think WHE won’t be offered another contract after playing every game this season other than one or two missed with covid/unavailability? I don’t. He offers great flexibility in 2023 in multiple roles incl HFF, wing, HBF or as specialist sub. He hasn’t lost his speed/endurance and is rarely out injured. On low $$$ it’s an easy decision.

If his tank and pressure aren’t up to scratch, what makes you think Geelong will want to play him in the seniors? Those are the exact issues they had with Menzel, and they delisted him, despite him being a prolific goal kicker…

It's in progress at least. Hopefully it can be agreed to fairly soon. I know he said he wanted to play the season out before doing a deal, and he opened talks a couple months ago. Which goes with the timeline. So hopefully, an agreement can be made sooner rather than later now that the VFL season is finished.
I'd hate to see him leave. And I do know, he is very happy at the club. Has good mates.

A bit disingenuous to say a medium marking forward is being kept out of the side by two small forwards playing crumbing and defensive pressure roles. He’s being kept out by WHE imo, and to a lesser extent AJ (who is also far more physically developed due to his age), but the role AJ is playing is more of a key forward role which Henry isn’t particularly well suited for anyway, being sub-190cm and relatively lean.

Once he gets his tank up to standard he’ll usurp WHE, but he’s done very well so far under the circumstances, regardless.
That’s the problem with being a medium marking forward, there aren’t many spots available for specialist one.

I can’t imagine four knee reconstructions would do much to assist building a tank.

Hang in there Ollie, WHE has been an evergreen, thou surely in the latter phases of a good career.
Can’t wait to see you take ownership of your flank in the next 5 years.
Yours for the taking, so please take 😀
(Can’t think of a more potential candidate for that position in the AFL).

I don’t get all this talk about Ollie competing with and eventually replacing WHE. They are nothing alike.

WHE is a running machine. Perhaps the best two way runner in our side, especially late in matches. His value is as a link man - an extra winger in reality - who can hit targets and also sneak forward to mark/goal from time to time. He’s also useful as gap-filler utility, much like Goldsack previously.

Henry is highly skilled no doubt. His overhead marking is exceptional. But he has three problems. One - he’s just not tall enough to play his preferred lead & mark forward role. Two - he’s not fit/fast enough to play anywhere other than inside F50. Three - he is currently poor at tackling/pressure when the ball hits the ground.

As things stand, Henry isn’t competing with WHE for a spot. He’s competing with Elliott, Johnson and Ginnivan for their spots. Obviously Elliott is miles in front, so it’s down to Ginni and Johnson who are currently more complete players than Ollie. It gets more complicated next year, with Krueger, McStay and even McInness all entering the fray. I struggle to see Henry breaking through unless he has a transformational off-season. He may decide it’s easier to seek a trade.

They had him on the list for a couple of years after his last one, so had ample time to work on his deficiencies.

I love how checkers goes about it however he's looked like a banged up tow truck this year. His style will take its toll as he ages much like it did with TCloke.

That might be part of the reason we're apparently bringing in McStay, because Checkers has been our de facto full forward for 4 years now, a role for which he is undersized.
He's been great, but could use a bit of help, so that he doesn't get so "banged up".

I agree, and to take it even further, I don't think either of Henry or WHE are in our best 22 next year when all fit, so we can't say one or the other is keeping the other out of the side...

Elliott the other one keeping him out - Elliott and AJs roles are the roles he's currently suited to - tank doesn't seem big enough yet for his likely future higher up the ground role.

If there were 4 Gary Ablett's in one team does that mean they would only fit 1 or 2 of them in a forward line, I hate that we have too many of this crap comment - if they are guns & can play they fit into a side - just like the All Australian team.

Or the fact his hand might not be 100% right for a final? Just a thought.

And/Or the fact his VFL game was not the best…and defensively needs more work.

The listed emergencies played better. My guess is Bianco or Macrae will be medical sub based upon VFL contributions. Brown was also pretty good.

Fly has been big on selection integrity.
