Part of me wonders if we should be having a look at Adam Tomlinson as part of the deal should Grundy go to Melbourne?

I'd be ok getting Weideman, Tomlinson and a pick in the deal. Both add valuable depth (at minimum) at both ends and Tomlinson has even shown he can have a run in the middle as a big bodied mid in spurts.
Why are we dumping Grundy in the first place?

To clear cap space.

If we are clearing cap space why are we going to take on a Melbourne player to take up cap space?

We don't need any more middle age list cloggers....so taking players just for the sake of it never ends well.

Any deal for Grundy is primarily around a salary dump. What we get back will depend on what we're willing to chip in.

I'd favour take next years picks over this years as we're not going to take too much to the draft this year.
we already have plenty of <21 and don't need more.
We need to invest in these players rather than bring in middle age guys that:
  • are not best 22
  • Don't fill a glaring need

Likewise, we're not taking anyone over 28 either. We have plenty of leaders nearing the end.
No need to add more.
Our age demographic is still stuffed, despite what happened on field this year.
Our best players are coming to and end and that's a real problem.

So take players on a real needs basis only and back our development in for next year.
Offload Grundy to set us back on the right path coin wise.

Trade our thirds for next years picks to strengthen our hand and
Take 2 picks to the draft and use our last to upgrade Noble.

See whats around in the SSP and pick up some cheap depth if we think its viable,
Otherwise leave the list spot open for MSD / Cap space.

Hrmm, not sure that's a good idea. While he's not proven just yet that he'll be a mainstay 22 for his whole career - Ginnivan could still be incredible. Think about the media attention and now umpiring s**t he's copping in his second year of footy. 100% that's had an impact.

He's the perfect example of a player that has a real chance to shine after a pre season that likely won't be interfered with by the media - as they will have no reason to talk about him when he's not playing.

Retain as depth. I think we lack a pressure forward with leg speed and good goal sense.

Perhaps try out some form of merger-cloning. We take Ginnivan and McReery and somehow find a way to fuse their souls together literally creating the most unstoppable small forward of all time.

Nailed it.

If you believe the rumors, Jackson is staying with Melbourne. Does that mean that we keeping Grundy? or we are still looking to trade him off the books?

off the books.

If nothing eventuates this year.....we'll just try again next year.... and the year after.....

Massive red flag over our list management direction if we were to bring in Mitchell. That's aside from his qualities as a player, which I'm not exactly sold on either. Any confidence I have in GW would be gone at that point.

What's wrong with him? Off field stuff?

The Mitchell recruitment is only relevant if we plan to contend next year. I think with Pendles, Adams, Sidey & Howe entering their twilight years we’ll be pushing towards a premiership next year.

I think Macrae, Draper and another young mid can still get midfield minutes next year.

You can't make such a teasing comment and not give us more, otherwise it just sounds like crap

Rumour has it Mitchell is also linked to the Saints, suspect Mitchell has a connection with Ratten as Rat's was at the Hawks IIRC.
Would think if the Saints are genuinely interested then Ratten holds no immediate concerns over Mitchell

I think he's is the perfect signing because we have those guys.

We don't know how much Tay's body has left - especially if we rely on him at stoppage. De Goey needs a seasoned partner in there and Titch may be absolutely perfect. We are screaming for another extractor, not just an inside mid - specifically a specialist extractor with the hands; as our quality on the outside stacks up nicely in a rotation of Pendles, Steele, Lipinski, Naicos, Jaicos, Crisp & at times Elliot.

I don't think he's anywhere near done, and I can see him being a Luke Ball level signing for dirt cheap. He'd be invaluable to the growth of a Macrae too IMO. As it provides another seasoned professional to help Macrae do what he does at VFL level, at the big boy table.

Mitchell wants to play for us next year, so his management is only dealing with us at this stage. We are weighing up whether to go down this road or not.....

Agree we're into him, but has Mitchell made it clear that it is the Pies only, his manager is not speaking to any other clubs and the Hawks are totally on board with a trade in principle?

No doubt Fly would be calling up Vossy and asking about Stocker. If you never hear another about Stocks, then you know there's a reason we steered clear.
Trading Grundy may be a mistake, Cameron is capable but still raw.
Cox will be 32 next year and his best is rarely seen, after that, no-one is next in line. Begg is too small then nothing even close. McStay could pinch hit, but I really think we're wasting money with him, ala QLynch, J White.
If Grundy wants to go, all fine by me, but we may be literally selling ourselves short.

For a 3rd rounder IMO not getting Mitchell would be negligence on our part.
Agreed. For a 3rd round and without a massive salary it's pretty much a free hit. I think the player's overhyped a fair bit, however there's no doubt he'd definitely add something to our side

I'm guessing he'll want a 3 year deal from this year, since the Hawks are offering 1 year at the end of his 2023 season, which takes him to around 32 years of age.

● Ranked 8th in Contested Possessions Per Game ● Ranked 19th in Effective Disposals Per Game
● Ranked 18th in Stoppage Clearances Per Game

And that's in a down year for him. If a deal can be made for a fair price, we've got to go for it

Hope where the Darcy Parish smoke is there's a little fire. Better than Mitchell and much younger. He's everything we need in an inside midfielder

Actual Moneyball as opposed to Cheapball which gets called moneyball?

Exactly. The example falls over if the reports of McStay's contract value and length are accurate. The whole idea of Moneyball was finding these gems on comparatively cheap deals. That McStay deal is at (if we're being kind) or over market value. Moneyball is also tough in an AFL context because there are far fewer players to analyse and a much different trade system.
