Would Sean have had any visibility of at least some of this?
Was it back in the early to mid 2000s? If so he wasnt there and may have changed by the time he arrived? Not sure of dates these occurred.

And yet he continually managed to poach indigenous players for his club.

Different standards of behaviour towards different groups is the point here, maybe clusters on a spectrum rather than binary is a way to see it closer to how it may have been.

Leave aside Kennet-Rioli and the culture of "casual racism" (edit: which exists everywhere to some degree, not just at Hawthorn) ... those directly targeted by the most horrifying of Clarko's and Fagan's alleged behaviours were young draftees, not established players traded in. Take their noted "ruthlessness" in player development multiplied by underlying racist attitudes and suddenly you get a couple of "mostly normal" demanding assholes behaving like every day monsters towards one group.

The Burgoyne->Wingard->Impey->Amon pathway from Port seems to have been, in part, established players helping draw in other established players. Back to clusters on a spectrum rather than seeing things as two binary groups it's possible that kids put under insane pressures who left relatively quickly didn't share their full stories with others in "their group" that they felt were "more favoured" by their... alleged abusers.

Cue the ‘gee we were surprised to hear about this at our club’ standard shock horror response. Most ATSI people would not be surprised.

I would actually like it if a club actually came out and said ‘we are not surprised with what we are hearing, like everyone else we have grown up in a country where racist policies and attitudes have been practiced before our very eyes and we are not surprised we have been complicit in this towards our First Nations players’

This Hawthorn model is basically putting into practice the Matt Rendall ‘only if there is a white parent’ stuff.

Which is the cornerstone of the centuries of racist policies and violence towards ATSI people.

There will be more of this stuff - that’s Collingwood and Hawthorn now. I imagine the crows too and probably most other clubs, maybe even ours.

These attitudes are rife, they’re everywhere.

From the Hawks board on Burgoyne:

  • Burgoyne stated he did not have knowledge of what the ABC reported had transpired and added that if he did, he would have tried to help
  • Burgoyne has confirmed he has been a part of the external investigation

In some ways it’s fitting that Gill’s tenure will end with another racism scandal. He never lifted a finger to deal with Goodes, Eddie (many times) or the numerous other instances over the last decade. It’s what I will remember him for.
Who Gill? The guy who oozes privilege - has oodles of sprawling estate (I imagine which is stolen land) and connections to the monarchy?

Surely not

An emotional Burgoyne said he could barely believe some of the allegations made about his former footy club, saying he and Mitchell had no idea

It’s very confronting … I have no knowledge of those things happening,” Burgoyne said at the Rule Prostate Cancer event on Wednesday.

“I have no knowledge of this, it’s the first I’ve heard of it in the last 24 hours.”

He said he had been asked to take part in the report the club undertook, but stressed he couldn’t believe allegations and feels deeply for those affected.

There is every chance that this was a directive from the AFLPA or the AFL. Certainly at some point in time there was a widespread belief that the best way of dealing with these online racist trolls was to ignore them and not amplify them. We now know that it wasn't an effective strategy.

I don't see much point in imagining failures from the club or coming up with conspiracies.

No conspiracy. All I'm saying is that racism is rife in society and, particularly, in football. All I'm saying is that we shouldn't assume totally clean hands.

Saw the headlines and the overview and it seemed like this was blown way out of proportion.

Then actually reading the stories from those ex-players. Wow that is horrible.

They did it multiple times as well, its a pattern of behavior.

Be interesting to see what happens to the coaches. I'd be shocked if Clarkson is fired because he is who he is. But he really should be. Cant be trusted with the players wellbeing after this.

This whole league stinks. It's *en vulgar. Love how Gil tried to hide it until the ABC report.

"When AFL draft day rolls around these days, Zac notes the over-representation of privileged private school kids and wonders how he even scraped his way into the 'system'" This line says so much.

I agree with your first sentence, however let's not forget the pathways the league has created for the likes of Aliir.

And the chorus of “I had no idea this was happening“ HAS started. It’s bs.
I refuse to believe if these allegations are true, you could spend so much time in company with the mentioned protagonists and not have any suspicions regarding their alleged behaviour.

PS any change Karl changes his mind? Would be all for keeping him.

Weren't Hawthorn the last club to have an indigenous player in their team?
When drafted, Chance Bateman asked why it had taken so long for Hawthorn to return to recruiting Indigenous players, Turnbull revealed a senior club official had, early in his career at Waverley, told him:

"Just remember, don't draft anyone with skin darker than mine."

Yes bullies selected their soft targets, Shades of the Hitler youth and Nazi tactics.
I was just following Clarko orders.

Where were their mentors and natural justice?

Now I understand why Hawthorn fans became the face of the Adam Goodes booing drama.

Jesus, and we're not talking about the 1960's
It is unbelievable.

I've seen a couple of comments this afternoon from the Hawthorn CE and it is pretty much as you expected.

If this happened when Shaun was there he would of had to know. He might of been left alone because Amy is white🤷

Of course if Andrew Newbold feels the need (or is forced) to step down from the AFL Commission over this scandal, that creates an opening for....Eddie McGuire!
Naïve question here. Do AFL Commission members have to be green lit by the clubs? If so I couldn't see McGuire anywhere near the Commission.

Yet our indigenous players were (and still are) hankering to get there. What's that all about? Just money?
I would say all of the the aboriginals who have gone have had fairly stable upbringings through private schools ect. The kids that didn’t have the “traditional” upbringing it was clear it was easier for Hawthorn to try and remove them from their past rather than support them. I actually feel ill writing that about an AFL team, it’s awful.

Harry Miller was there 2005-2006
We all know Alastair Clarkson arrived in 2005.
The three players quoted have been given false names (in the story); we can guess, but it take a while for the names of the young draftees to emerge.
