Personally feel that if you want to salary dump and package a first rounder you should only be able to have the pick of the clubs below you and maybe 2 above at most.

The problem becomes that you start to penalise the dumpor too heavily because you lose the ability to ship quality. Maybe Bowes is not prepared to leave and he was really only going to Geelong the whole time, but did the responsible thing and heard us and Hawthorn out.

What would it cost them to ship McPherson?

While clubs that are irresponsible / incompetent enough to need to engage in these salary dumps don't deserve sympathy restricting this will cause more problems.

The playing field is level. You can't legislate against incompetence as an equalisation measure.

Just look at us. Can't even convince Bowes he has a spot in our team. That's not hard to believe is it? The same idiot who put the team together is responsible for fixing it.

A far less complicated fix would be to get rid of the provision to ‘stretch’ the money out. The Cats wouldn’t be in the Bowes fight if they had to match 850k for the first two years straight up and not stretch it out.

Protects the sanctity of the dump for the true dumpees and rewards the clubs with cap space.

I like this best

But the other option would be for us to become a well run, successful destination club with quality veterans who play for unders so that we can punish the weak clubs for their crapness.

The solution I think is pretty simple
Option 1
'Salary' not re-structured = no restriction on trading on picks

Option 2
'Dumped' Salary restructured = Trade involving picks must result in pick value on both sides of trade being within 200 points.

Definition of dumped Salary= a proposed trade where both the player and highest pick involved in the deal are on the same side of the trade (ie Bowes and Pick 7 for F2)

look at them lining up for that sanctity - Al knows

im not too bothered he's going to geelong. felt inevitable.
also that they'll get 7 for their efforts too. But to get both for a pick in the 30s doesn't sit right. AFL should block the trade with the pick unless the cats stump up better. it should be 18 or F1 at absolute minimum.
i think adding the pick as bait is fine, the AFL should enforce a rule that a contract is a contract in terms of the salary cap. In simple terms if he's being paid $850k for the next two years he gets paid $850k for two years, the cats(in this case) can extended it all they want but the existing contract is what they need to commit to. This would help clubs manage back ended(and the reverse) contracts and player agent behaviour better.

AFL trade period 2022: GWS Giants could move for North Melbourne pick 1 after Jason Horne-Francis deal

JON RALPH

NEWS CORP AUSTRALIA SPORTS NEWSROOM

06 OCTOBER 2022

North Melbourne’s three-way deal that would hand the Roos the top two picks in the national draft could see it considering trading the No. 1 overall pick in this November’s national draft.

The Roos are open to offers on the No. 1 overall pick and with the Giants keen on key position players 194cm marking forward Aaron Cadman shapes as their ideal target.

The Giants are known to be keen to secure Vic Country’s Cadman given their determination to boost their key position stocks, with the rangy forward compared to a young Jeremy Cameron by many recruiters.

Some recruiters believe the Giants are keen to ensure they have access to Cadman even if it requires GWS to hand over multiple picks, with GWS currently holding picks three, 12, 15 and 19.

Such a deal could see the Roos falling back from picks one and two to No. 2 and No. 3 but also securing pick 12 or 15 from GWS.

North Melbourne has the option of considering options all the way up to November’s draft as it assesses its own draft order through that period.

But securing the first pair of selections would give it undoubted bargaining power, especially if it did not have Cadman as its No. 1 player on the draft board.

Players like explosive centre square mid George Wardlaw and Sandringham Dragons mid-forward Harry Sheezel would still be on the board if it allowed GWS to secure Cadman.

North Melbourne premiership player David King said on Fox Footy the Roos had to take a tall-small combo if they secured in the first two picks after overlooking Logan McDonald for Will Phillips two years ago.

First the Roos must clinch the deal to secure West Coast’s No. 2 selection as part of a three-way trade with the Power and Eagles.

Port Adelaide quickly swatted away Eagles interest in contracted star Dan Houston on Thursday, but all parties believe there is enough goodwill ahead of talks this weekend to broker a deal.

North Melbourne would secure West Coast’s No. 2 overall pick, Port Adelaide would hand over pick 8 and its future first-rounder to the Eagles and the Power would get Jason Horne-Francis.

At this stage neither club is happy with the finer details of the deal and Port Adelaide would clearly have to sacrifice extra picks including No. 33 to throw Eagle Willie Rioli into the deal.

But West Coast has players later in the top 10 of the draft including WA locals Elijah Hewett and Reuben Ginbey that it could select before taking another local player next year with the Port Adelaide future first-round pick.

I'd be getting in with WCE and spoiling the party!
Some how make a deal Ess Pick 5 for WCE Pick 3.

Never know might be able to leverage 3 on draft night or later in the period to get multiplie picks before Davey bid.

we are getting stuck into dunkley hard here

any truth too;

900k first 2 years
700k last 3 years

We will satisfy WB trade request.

I’d only take him if he was available in the PSD. Dogs will ask too much.

No reason we dont sit on the sidelines and see what happens and hope it all falls through and we nab him in the PSD. Actually is Dunkley playing 4D Chess? Declares Brisbane his team of choice knowing they have no pick depth because of the 2 kids in the draft. Then deal falls through late and Norf, WCE, GWS have no cap space to manoeuvre and EFC comes to the rescue in the PSD and he gets paid a mega deal and keeps Essendon draft hand intact thus helping him and the team achieve success.

Pretty sure North have the cap space to grab him before us

Flies in the face or what Scott said.

We're not going to spend the draft capital on him.

I believe the Dogs may well spite the Lions and that the PSD could be an option. We would be well within our rights.

WCE and GWS can be priced out of the equation easily enough. Query whether North can though I reckon they're probably a bit shy about recruiting a guy that doesn't want to be there.

the capital probably isn't too bad

4 -> 11
22 -> 39 (Davey pick)
And we get Dunkley

I'd let one of the top 5 slide and go a later pick (Ginbey, Hollands, Szybkowski, George, Jefferson) if it meant Dunkley in
Or even factor in a 2023 bounce and keep 4 and offer F1. If we're garbage, there's still a good chance we a top 5 comp pick from Parish anyway
its a gamble given nature of the draft shaping up next year. but you do get a known quantity in Dunkley

I was trying to read some word salad yesterday by Edmund which indicated the Dogs had knocked a better deal than that.

might have been before Brisbane traded 15 out.
All this talk of Power being a shrewd operator...he's got himself into a corner if Dunkley goes PSD now.

Essendon this trade period
