1. Will Ashcroft

I watched about ten minutes of the Vic Metro v Country game a few weeks back and Ashcroft must have touched it 15 times. He's good inside, he's good outside, he has a terrific head of hair, he's already excelled playing against men for Brisbane in the VFL and he fills a genuine need for Brisbane in that they need more generational talents if available, but the main reason I'm matching the bid at pick 1 is Keys is forcing me to.

I'll keep this very brief as I've got a few things happening at the moment.
* Write ups and reasoning to follow to shortly.

I was going to try and get cute with pick swaps but have decided to plow forward just to keep it moving.

3. North Melbourne - George Wardlaw

4. North Melbourne - Harry Sheezel

Schtinker - You're up mate!

“He’s great at football and we love that. I’m picking him because he plays football so well. I do love the football. Football.”

Alright I’m going to do the most Gold Coast thing ever, and reach for a player that won’t go home.

Oliver Hollands.

Brief write up to come.

Until they sign him on an inflated contracted extension, and are forced to trade him due to salary cap pressure 2 years later.

Hollands wouldn't have been my first choice here, I have a balanced mid as best available, but just as Bowes would have struggled for midfield time, had he remained at Gold Coast, so to would any inside mid drafted here as well.

In the end it came down to a choice of two players, and the other player I was considering isn't quite the right fit for what Gold Coast actually need in that area of the ground.

Hollands is my prototypical type of winger. Very good runner, both for endurance and speed, strong contested game for the position, good vision to move the ball inside, or to lower his eyes and hit a short target. The main knock is that he isn't an elite kick by position.

He already has strong ties to Gold Coast, through his brother, so much so, that during 2020 he got out of Victoria before lockdown, and trained with Gold Coast's academy for a fair chunk on the year.

Hollands won't walk in to the team straight away, he'll be competing with the home sick Jeremy Sharp (who might be about to find himself in Stewie Dew's dog house), which probably puts him in pole position to finish the season as GC's prefered fat side winger.

Pick 8. Geelong: Jedd Busslinger. 197 cm 85 kg. KPD East Perth.

This is one of those times when the best available happens to also be a real need.
When you are the reigning Premiers then it's a safe bet to assume that the Clubs list is in good shape.

Of Course it also helps if the AFL preside over an incompetent system, in which cellar dweller and perennial shit show, GC out of the goodness of their heart, hand over pick 7 to the Cats for a "mind boggling" future third round pick plus a handy midfielder, as they also also take on a salary dump.

Back on topic- its no secret that the Cats have an ageing and highly experienced list, however there is a real need to start the restock of younger players in all positions.

KPD is probably the Cats thinest position in the depth chart stakes.

Bussling in the best KPD in this daft cohort and has been touted as a top 10 pick for over 18 months, so it should be no surprise that the Cats pounce with pick 8.
This decision was made easier with the favourite local lad Clark, having been taken off the board just prior to this selection.

Busslingers footballing virtues are well documented but in short he excels at reading the play in general and the ball in the air in particular, so no surprise that his intercept making is a feature of his game.
What does elevate him from other KPD is that his foot skills, both on the run and stationary are elite for a big fella.

I have mentioned several times these past 12 months that I consider Busslinger as one of the few, "bust proof players", in this cohort.
With confidence I can see Busslinger being a 200 game player, as his style and skill set are the prototype for the modern tall defender.

In one of those obtuse and quirky crossings of paths Bussling and Geelong already have a strong connection.

As a nipper Busslinger was, as an auskicker, awarded a NAB award that happened to be presented to him by none other than Mr Geelong himself Joel Selwood.

Since that award Selwood has kept in touch with Busslinger and has mentored him along his journey from Auskick to Draft cohort.

If he does get to be drafted by Geelong in the real deal I would not be at all surprised if Joel didn't hand the # 14 jumper over to Busslinger.

In summary I am pretty happy with this pick being a pretty good union for both player and Club.

However it still shit me off big time, that the BDE are able to snaffle such a terrific prospect ...essentially for free....so much for the AFL equalisation policy.
