I'd be ropeable if the 3 main sponsors of my club were a heavy polluting mining and steel making company, a manufacturing company that not only produces millions of air polluting cars but is owned by a State that partakes in censorship, coercion and massive human rights violations, and finally a company that murders millions of inhumanely caged battery hens every day. Ropeable!
What-aboutism when it’s an argument to do nothing is the worst and flimsiest argument.

Like I could possibly accept this as an argument (and I mean accept as in recognise it not necessarily agree or disagree with it) if your argument was why those companies should also be dumped.

It’s also not an argument for why gina and her sponsorship should be beyond reproach as someone else made here

At best it could be said to be pointing out inconsistencies, except Gina’s sponsorship wasn’t questioned on being bad for the environment, if those sponsors you listed had come out and said something like kill the Jews you might have a point.

Also, are you (and don’t take offense as I think you’re proud of this - the biggest right winger bootlicking corpo backing bloke on here) aware you’re making an argument for why unfettered capitalism is bad?

Yeah, funnily if you put most companies under a microscope they’re going to look bad, that’s capitalism. It puts money first and everything else a distant 12th at best.

That doesn’t mean you just ignore drawing a line somewhere and say since nothing is unimpeachable it all must be acceptable

You've gone so far right you've actually made it left

Yes in a shitty capitalist society if you follow the money it all leads back to greedy, unsustainable, inhumane shit

My super has only risen by $1300 from 2021 to now in a time I’ve paid into it many many times more than that.

Is my superfund just performing incredibly badly or have others experienced the same thing?

It’s pretty disappointing for me because I’ve moved across the country and have been working 50-70 hour weeks for much of the last 3 years to set myself up and my super has gone nowhere so wondering if my fund is ****ed to move or whether that’s just the market and all funds have been this poor.

Sounds about right. I haven't checked recently but this year to last year it was only my contributions that kept it from going backwards.

Edit: actually that's probably performing pretty bad. I only paid the mandatory contributions in and I think it still went up by about 3k over 2021-2022. Which sucks, but is not as bad was what you're describing

I have no idea what your super mix is but for context the ASX200 is down 12% year to date and our market has performed well in global terms because commodity prices are high so our mining companies (in particular oil, gas and coal) have outperformed. In the US - where your super is probably heavily invested - the S&P500 is down 21% and the Nasdaq is down 31%.

I wouldn't want to be taking my super out now but long term volatility is the price you pay for strong returns.

The Chinese Communist Party, the 'State' that owns MG, just 'elected' a life dictator. They are accused of committing genocide. So yes, MG could be accused of not just saying things like that, but actually putting them into practice.

There is a very high chance that the paragraph you typed was on a device solely or substantially manufactured in China. Or drive a car that has key components made in China. What you wear and what you use to cook your food is most likely wholly or substantially made in China. A large proportion of our country's wealth is made on the back of exports to China - helping to build the roads, hospitals and other infrastructure we all use every day.

So are we all aiding and abetting the Chinese dictator commit genocide?

Sounds ludicrous doesn't it? I agree.

Don't fall for the simplistic 'whataboutism' schtick that others are trying to use in a pathetic attempt to take the focus off the real issue here.

Which is that Gina Rinehart is Australia's richest citizen and ranked #70 in Forbes Richest individuals in the world with an estimated US$27 billion net worth. Revenue for her company grew by 61% to $17 billion last year, generating an annual net profit after tax of $7.3 billion. Good for her!

But if you’re that wealthy and your main motivation for sponsoring a team is to progress the sport and support the athletes, surely you wouldn’t really care about insisting having your father's name on their uniform knowing the history of that name and the grief it causes to those wearing the uniform?

I agree that none of us are responsible for what our parents say; but if you famously inherited billions from a father who advocated for genocide and eugenics of Indigenous Australians... it would be a fairly prudent endeavour to, at the very least, condemn those statements and articulate why they were wrong?

Best to check your supers performance over a longer period, min of say 5 yrs and look at time averaged performance, returns should be at around 6 percent for a slightly aggressive portfolio , also check your admin fees against other funds.
Last yr was bad with most funds being in the negative.

Let's focus on the real issue here rather than supporting nonsensical comparisons with foreign leaders and fried chicken companies.
Your argument makes no sense and skirts the issue entirely.

The issue isn't around what device I'm using or where the parts are sourced. The argument is squarely on where a sporting club or organisation takes sponsorship money from. And it is perfectly fair to compare taking money from Hancock to taking money from MG and it is a reasonable assessment to say that taking money from MG is in fact worse than Hancock.

The implication is that if you take money from someone you support them and that is the heart of the issue. We are not discussing the ethics of using Chinese products or Hancock minerals.

I deleted my post because I realised wading into this mess is pointless, but I still stand by the comment. Every action or decision one makes in life is a calculus of how much good is created vs. how much bad. There is a real possibility Netball Australia doesn't survive this. People lose their jobs, clubs cease to exist, funding for junior and community level sport goes away. I don't care what happens to elite Netball because I don't care for the sport, but if you were involved in the sport it would be completely valid to ask if this has been worth it.

If what has occurred here actually has a net benefit on society.

That bastion of Social progressiveness Sweeden practiced Eugenics up until 1974.

I must admit the results have been exceptional ...

Yep. They lose $15 mill of badly needed sponsorship dollars, for a Sport that has pretty much been the pinnacle of women's ream sport in this country for 100 years (now being usurped by massively substandard versions of traditionally male sports being enormously subsidised by huge men's leagues to steal sportswomen away from the likes of netball) because a fringe player is uncomfortable with what some racist old man said 25 years before she was born.
Netball Australia are not selling their soul to the devil by having Hancock sponsor them. Betting Companies are destroying lives on a daily basis. Now. Today. No worries. All good.

I hope those players don't feel bad when they're unable to be paid.

They'll still get paid. Netball Australia will just get some other sponsor and then get the government to make up the shortfall. Gina will continue to make billions and won't lose any sleep over it. And the world will keep going only with another few million added to the never ending line of taxpayer debt.

And people like Popo will continue whining about the government subsidising women’s sport and weirdly failing to whine about the government not collecting any meaningful tax revenue from people like… Gina Rinehart.

In the 2021-22 FY most super funds reported what they euphemistically call "negative growth", or what you and I would call a "loss". This was on the back of both the Dow and the All Ordinaries falling by more than 10% in this period. The only advice I can really offer is not to panic by taking your money out of the super system. Over the long term Super is far more tax-effective and performance will bounce back.

If you are able to change funds then you can always look out for those with better returns (sites like Canstar keep track of this), but of course that's no guarantee that that fund will do better in the future. You can always look at the mix of your investments in your current fund too - you should be able to tweak these to favour more conservative investments if you prefer. I'd only do this though if you are close to retirement and feel that the market may not bounce back in the short term.

PS I must stress I am not a financial advisor and have no qualifications in this field. If you're concerned about the viability of your investment, I'd recommend seeing a qualified, certified advisor who is not an employee of a company selling investment products.

From the Australian playing group's side, three options are believed to have been put forward at the meetings between the playing group and Hancock Mining Group:

  • That an apology be made or at least some distance be put between Lang Hancock's genocide comments and the values of the current leadership of Hancock Prospecting, led by Gina Rinehart
  • That a pause be put on all discussions until the current international series against New Zealand and England was complete
  • That Wallam be granted an exemption from wearing the logo for personal reasons
These options seem reasonable to me and the dispute was close to being resolved on Friday night before Rinehart issued her statement withdrawing the funding offer and stating that players were 'virtue signalling' and claims that her company never insisted that the Hancock name be on the playing uniform.

In what seems as a bit of a tantrum move Rinehart controlled Roy Hill Mining then also withdrew their sponsorship funding from the West Coast Fever and Netball WA who weren't even a party to the Netball Australia dispute.

Bizarre.

The Company Tax rate in 20/21 was 26%. In 2021 Hancock paid $2.7 Billion in tax on a $10.5 billion profit. What precisely are they not paying? This doesn't take into account State Government Royalties.

Simple Maths and Tax law not your strong suit RaMan?

Comprehension not yours?

At no point did I suggest Hancock hadn’t paid what it was legally required to pay.

Lol again with the what about-ism.

Who exactly is pro-betting company sponsorship?

Do you think the people that have issues with Gina’s fathers comments / this sponsorship debacle are fully behind gambling sponsorship in our sports?

In the past couple of hours you’ve presented some pretty compelling arguments about the negatives of unfettered capitalism without a hint of irony as what about isms as if some gotcha to.. we’ll I’m not sure who?
