Isn’t that the problem of using statistics? They only tell part of the story. …[SNIP] … Not to say it’s wrong to use stats. As they hold important information.

A chap I used to work with was fond of saying:

Statistics are like bikinis. What they reveal is suggestive, and what they conceal is vital.

I always like "the numbers will tell you exactly what you want to know...if you torture them long enough..."

Hoping this is the right place, after reading the pinned post in the draft thread.

How many picks do you guys believe Hawthorn is likely to take to the draft, and how many are you likely to actually use?

I'm asking because I'm wondering if the following trade might be possible.

When the Ashcroft bid is made, Brisbane trade pick 34 to Hawthorn for picks 48, 50, and 52.

The trade only really works for both parties, if Hawthorn plan to take 6 picks to the National draft, but intend to only use 4, and push the last two in to the rookie draft, or hold them over to the SSP.

You are effectively turning pick 48 in to pick 34, at the cost of two picks you weren't planning on using, and we get a nice ~230 points upgrade on pick 34.
We will take four and hold an SSP spot

So you currently only have 5 available list spots?
I think it's six but could be wrong. I assume we are going to take four but we could take five. We will leave at least one pick for SSP/MSD but likely will have two spots. Others will know more about our list dynamics at the moment and I am probably going to be corrected haha

Maximum of 9 list spots available ~

Current List ~ 29 Main list, 5 Rookies, 1 Category B Rookie.

We will upgrade 3 rookies and then take 4 players in the draft taking our Primary list to 36(the minimum), take 1-2 in the Rookie draft allowing 2 list spots for the supplementary period/ mid season draft.

I don’t think we take a dfa u til after the draft, if at all. Last on the list and might depend on who we land.
Interesting. Have we typically done that though? Thought when we nailed a DFA it was always after first list lodgment and before the draft.

Right. So that means you can take 6 picks to the National Draft, and you’ll pass on the last 2, and push them in to the rookie draft.

Fair chance we might trade with you on the night.

I suspect there isn’t much quality in dfa and we might want flexibility so we can make a call on Lawrence if he receives a bid. Or vickery too for that matter. If we rate them higher than the dfa we probably leave that list spot open.

I'm pretty certain it's 7 spaces on the playing list, plus room for 1 non-playing Cat B.

Without going into rookies or otherwise, our total on the playing list is 35, not 34, as listed above.

Would have thought this years' DFA list would be the best its ever been.

Vickery and Bennets are potentials for Cat B though right? So doesn't really impact list spots

Suppose the flexibility is just key here.

Vickery will probably go in the national draft, so we need him to fall to pick 40 or later to be able to match a bid.

Bennetts?

As someone let me know the other day, we only have one Cat B spot free with O'Hara (max of two), so only one of Bennetts and Vickery can join Fionn on that part of the list.

Can we reunite Daniel Chick with his boy Seth in Australia at the Hawks as a cat B please?

Son of Chicky! Would love to see how the kid handles a footy. Looks fit as and into his sports.

Oleg Markov cut by the Suns.

All I can remember was him being super quick and being one of many that smashed us in Darwin.

Anyone know much about why he hasn't been able to cut it at AFL level?

Where would he sit on our list, in terms of talent?

Positionally, we have so many HBFers already.

From what I've seen of him, looked ok in a strong Richmond team, but hasn't done anything of note in Gold Coast. Will be 27 next year, decent size, but a bit soft and disposal isn't elite. Can be super quick.

IF we were going for a DFA, I see much better options.

I am a bit surprised that nobody has picked up Dan Howe in the DFA period. Granted it might happen post-draft when list sizes are more solidified, but I think he would be a bloody handy player for a contending team.

Think he surely goes to North. They need some experienced bodies.
