Not really

If the NGA player is the best available and any club can land them it makes sense to take them.

In the father son scenario, even if you bid on them you can't land them. The reason they don't bid on them at pick one is because they'd want all the media and fanfare that comes with having a pick one in the draft.

Evej the player gets another $10k in their pocket.
If that was the case then Daicos/Ashcroft should drift all the way through to the rookie draft.

Clubs regularly bid on F/S's so it shouldn't matter whether the F/S is rated Pick 1 or Pick 20.

As for the kudo's of being No 1 - well it can also be argued that being picked No 1 may put undue pressure on a player so maybe clubs are better off bidding on Daicos/Ashcroft because it takes a bit of pressure of Horne-Francis and Cadman.

People may see it as an entirely futile exercise but its better than intentionally giving your opposition a leg up.

Adelaide bid on JUH because they thought he was the best player in the draft - nobody batted an eyelid.

Harley Reid looks like a superstar at this point. They'd have to be insane to trade out their future first to get into this one.
So did Max - arguably he was having games that were unheard of.

An acl later and he found his way to Moorabbin at 4 when he should have been the clear and obvious #1

No, they don't slide to the rookie draft because there isn't the same fanfare and excitement with picks taken outside one so clubs have less issue bidding on them after that.

I'd imagine not every club thinks the same as the next but I can see why a club that finishes with the wooden spoon would like some time in the media etc

Sounds like we are a huge chance of landing 1 of the players we rate higher than Cmac now.

Doubt we trade up from 9

If we rate the players that should still be available it would not be smart to trade away future picks to get lower.

interesting player Burgiel. I can’t work out who he reminds me of or what type of player he is
I reckon he could end up a pretty handy small forward that gets the 'will play midfield' line said about him every preseason but never makes the move permanently. Has the speed, very good below his knees and overall very crafty.

I'm hoping we get one of him or Keeler in the 2nd round.

Isn't it an extra 2nd Rd pick we are looking at.

Hope so, was responding re someone believing we should trade down to get a higher first round pick. To me we needed to get that only at the trade table not losing our picks that we need and in the next couple of years. Not saying an extra pick in the first round would be good - we are not Geelong who get gifted pick 7

Extra 2nd would make sense.

With all the links to Hewett - surely we’re not interested at pick 10?

Hoping we are looking at him with a later pick ala Burgiel
No it sounds like he is sliding.

Talk of landing him at 20-24

Which is why I’m keen.

An athletically gifted midfielder with proven versatility, Burgiel played across all 3 lines at various points this season, bringing his daring run and clean disposal to each role”

Somewhat flying under the radar due to the plethora of talent in all his sides, Coby Burgiel has been a consistent and reliable force through the midfield, but has shown his versatility when forced to play as a defender or forward for Vic Country at the Under 18 Championships. Burgiel’s speed and cleanliness below his knees are two traits that standout amongst other midfielders in the crop, finishing equal second in the 20m sprint at the National Combine with a stunning 2.88-second run, Burgiel has no trouble showing this speed on-field.

Doesn’t sound like a small forward 😂

I’d even consider doing our future first and our first second rounder this year.

2 of Mackenzie/Tsatas/Clark

For whatever we have next year and maybe Keeler.
Geelong will hit a cliff soon. I know it's been said for a decade but their youth are a long way back compared to their over 30s. They actually went flat out at a flag and have stopped doing the management that got them to be a consistent finalist for so long.
I would have thought also, until there trade's etc this year, they have a number of younger kids that will now come through.
That’s where the saints need to look around our growth area. Focus on what makes the bayside area great and bring back players who grew up in the area.
Look what Geelong did to lure Jack Bowes and pick 7 into their club for nothing. They identified local talent with contracts running out, talked to them and kept them close.

Fin Callaghan is coming out of contract end of 2023. Mordy boy. Get in there saints and start the convos.
Isn't it very different living in Geelong or anywhere near that area to living bayside

If we grabbed another second rounder and our draft haul was:

Phillipou
Hewitt
Keeler
Van Es
Noah Long
McLennan (rookie)

You would be popping champagne and gringo2011 would be having to take our recruiters for an apology dinner.

They've sacked most of the last lot of recruiters. This is Toce's first draft. He needs to get this right. That looks like a great haul but giving up future picks is not a great idea IMO.

stavro#4 your mate & Cal on the same page. Interesting that he put his phantom to recruiters for comment.

Gets very very good info this bloke.

So I’m feeling confident it is one of Tsatas or Phillipou we land.

Tsatas apparently was very impressive the other day infront of recruiters and that has apparently swayed the bombers.

It’s not great but we will get picks back in the way of Clark/NWM next year.

If we kill it and make top 6. Then we are laughing with the decision.
