STRENGTHS:

  • Acceleration
  • Clean hands
  • Ground balls
  • Inside game
  • Scoreboard impact
  • Work rate

IMPROVEMENTS:

  • Endurance
  • Outside game

Long has adapted well to what the year has thrown at him to still take positives out of it, having had his progress halted by injury early on. His transformation from a more pure inside midfielder, to one who can hold his own in the forward half has been impressive to watch.

Given he sees himself primarily as an onballer, a natural place to start would be what he does so well there. Though small in stature (178cm), he fares well at stoppages with his smarts and clean hands, which help him win first possession before jetting off with a sharp turn of speed. There a few more effective ground level players than Long.

The added element to his game has been that scoreboard impact as a forward. Though his work rate fits the bill of a high half-forward, Long has fared equally well inside attacking 50, finding the goals with regularity. He booted five majors throughout the National Championships and one per his final three NAB League outings, not to mention his consistent output in that regard for Geelong Grammar.

An unselfish teammate, Long's vision and decision making also shone as he got creative close to goal. He averaged over five score involvements for both Bendigo and Vic Country, bringing teammates into the game with clever decisions when looking inboard or towards the big sticks.

His kicking and finishing generally held up when stationed forward of the ball, though Long could benefit from a touch more polish and composure when blazing away out of stoppages. His 54 per cent kick efficiency this year somewhat attests to it. That, and rebuilding his running capacity post-injury will help his outside game - both of which have been areas Long himself said can yield improvement.
Interestingly same height as Steely Green. Consolation prize for the Pieman?

Really happy with Burgiel.

But really disappointed we overlooked Clarke for Barnett.
What does everyone think we're going to do once Nic is gone? It staggers me that people wouldn't be thrilled with taking the draft's best ruckman, and give him 2 years to find his feet before he takes Nic's spot. I think it's a sensational pick

Is he more a mid or a forward mate? (AFL projection)
Probably a forward at the next level mostly, but his bottom aged performances playing essentially exclusively as an inside mid was really promising. Only moved forward this year due to losing fitness from injury, but has probably rounded out his game very well

Thanks mate...If he had a AFL comparable playing style, who would you say he's most like?

West Coast have a need for speed - and draftee Coby Burgiel cannot wait provide it on the wide open spaces of Optus Stadium. The Eagles drafted Burgiel with their fourth pick at no.29 overall, with club impressed with the livewire who had excellent campaigns for Gippsland Power and Vic Country in the NAB League and National Under-18s.

Still, after multiple meetings with West Coast, the 18-year-old had a sleepless night before trying to distract himself with a game of golf and a swim with friends on Tuesday as he waited for the second night of the draft.

“I’ve been at boarding school (Wesley College) for the last three years, so I’m used to living away from home,” he said. “I am so grateful for the opportunity they (West Coast) have given me and they’ve obviously been a successful club over the past decade. “I think they’re young now, lost a couple of their veterans, but it should be good. A couple of young boys of a similar age, I should get along well with them, hopefully, build a good connection and have good chemistry.”

“I am happy to play anywhere but I feel like I play my best footy as a half-back or a midfielder,” he said. “Speed has been my weapon. My skills and my decision-making... those three are my best attributes. “I love the big grounds because I feel like I can show my speed a lot more with the space and create more for my teammates.”

Very West Coast recruiters to rate junior year performance.
