So last night whilst waiting at a bus stop in Doha I got talking to some Argentinian bloke who in broken English and with hand gestures was being highly complimentary about Australia’s performance against them. Was saying he is nervous against Netherlands but does not fear Brazil at all. They are scared of us he was trying to tell me. Then he broke into the Andrew Redmayne grey wiggle routine and was mocking Peru and I just cracked up. Gave him a high five. Went to the Morocco v Spain game and it was simply insane inside the stadium. Loud beyond belief. Crazy scenes all over Doha that night. Never seen such passionate fans. We ended up having dinner around midnight at a Georgian restaurant at Souq Waqif where the waiter was from Macedonia and whose wife is from Rwanda. Couldn’t make this shit up. Got Arg V Ned tonight then Eng V Fra tomorrow. Have also tix for the potential Arg V Bra semi, that is going to be mental…
I’m actually wearing a jumper today, cool and windy where I am. I witnessed a very brief shower a few days ago which was kind of an honour as it only rains for a couple of days a year here.

Some other observations,
  • you never wait more than a few minutes for a train or bus, very easy and efficient to move around
  • taxis and ubers are everywhere and cheap
  • the streets are clean and safe, security and volunteers everywhere. Been here 2 weeks and no hassles or issues.
There is a great vibe around the place, very friendly locals. A lady in a burqua approached me and my son, offered us some sweets and had a nice chat. This is very common.
  • purchased some pseudoephedrine based cold and flu tablets at the chemist, no prescription. Will have to leave them here….
  • the air conditioning is killing me. Cannot avoid it.
  • have spoken to several migrant workers. Most are here for the money, nothing else. Shit here but get paid, better at home but not get paid seems to be the common scenario.
  • not sure if it’s been picked in Australia but the “Metro, this way” catch cry is a phenomenon here. A lot of the African volunteers when you approach the metro station are making up rap ’metro this way’ songs. It’s hilarious.
  • there are plenty of places where you can have a drink and they’re pretty easy to find. 6 pints for around $70 & $30 for burger/chips/pint are super deals at the Red Lion pub.

Noticed again this morning that Argentina made up at least 90% of the crowd . I was surprised at how much they outnumbered us but thought it may have been because not many aussies would have booked accom ect thinking we would make the last 16. Why are there so many of them ?

Spent the last couple of Saturdays out at Casey Fields watching the Melbourne City womens team. Two good wins, some nice football, so club football as well tbh, but a XXXX Gold is only $5.50, it's not too far from home, take my folding chair and kick back in the sun. Sometimes life is good
