Autopsy Round 2, 2023: Sydney torch Hawthorn

The most telling thing for me, that nobody has mentioned, is that we are carrying our senior players.

Frost and Impey should be playing at BH, but can't due to being promoted as leaders.

Breust has been bog average.

Sicily and Hardwick have lowered their colours.

CJ is down on confidence.

The kids can't lift to pick up the slack.
Hence the beltings will come thick and fast, until the senior guys pull their finger out and show some form and some *ing leadership!!

It looks as though only Dylan Moore has realised this is HIS club now. He doesn't just get to play for Hawthorn, he is the reason we are Hawthorn. Mitch Lewis likewise, but he isn't out there at the moment.

We desperately need Jiath, Hardwick, Scrimshaw and all the players within that 22-26 year age demographic to take full ownership of the Brown and Gold.

A lot of truth in this.
Last 2 weeks when everything is falling a part, Moore is the player letting the younger players (he's young hinself) know what is going wrong, how to improve etc.

Only a small sample size, but feel that Moore may have been a better captaincy choice. Sicily is being exposed because he has to try and lead when he needs to be playing his role.

If this was the NFL, Moore would be the captain (generally the QB but not always), whilst Sicily would be the defensive captain

Have to say that one positive on a pretty dirty day was the continued good form of Jimmy Worpel.

Looks to be in a much better headspace this year and seems to be enjoying his footy again.

I reckon this is what we can/should expect from Worps from now on. Mid twenties disposals, some grunt at the contest as well as a couple of clangers.

So never one of the truelly top midfielders of the league but still a very handy player and valuable member of the team and I am totally cool with that outcome.

Where has all our structure / system gone in one off season? Completely dysfunctional. Losing a few players shouldn’t cause this.

Our midfield stats look okay but we’re smashed on transition or when they get ball in space - can’t be all the forwards fault. I expect our defence looks so bad as our new midfield is a shambles defensively - and our senior defenders are getting frustrated (although some horrible errors).

A big challenge for Mitchell and senior players to get some sort of system and confidence back. We’re still likely a bottom 4 club but need to be somewhat competitive.

Tough watch especially at 5am. Backline which was our strength doesn’t feel that way anymore. Would only have hardwick (who needs to be settled) and Sicily as locks, despite both being poor today. Blanck I think will be ok, CJ and bramble can’t defend so can’t have both there and one needs to go elsewhere, impey looked great pre season but now not sure, frost poor 2 weeks in a row. Time for DGB and maybe not yet but keen to see Tank and Seamus get games before mid season. Midfield happy enough feel like newk Ward frenchy worpel nash day is a solid and young 6. Amon and Morrison decent wings. Forward line is an absolute need again only see Lewis and Moore as locks. A fan of CMac as well. Rucks we solved our depth problem but seem to have 3 average rucks and ramsden who I am quietly bullish on. We need to find a way to become more competitive - not just for the players mental well being (ours too), but no free agent except for those prioritising cash would come to us performing like this.

I don’t think in 47 years of supporting the Hawks have i ever seen a more uncompetitive team, not in the Crawshay years or the first years of Clarkson. We are being let down badly by our senior players with so many unforced errors, lack of intensity, broken tackles, dropped marks and undiscipline.
We will have our lowest ever finish and most probably finish last with a percentage barely over 50%.
All great teams are built on defence not on some notion that all out attack, especially when you skill level is so poor, will lead us to the promised land.
I recall being pantsed by Gold Coast in2017, with a team that didn’t even have the excuse of youth

The frost and impey ones feel the worst to me, the same thing at selection each week for the last four years wears pretty thin.

Frost is looking quite bad this year from a one on one perspective, isn’t moving the same

“Mitchell is a good coach “

That is yet to be determined
I reckon he has 30 games to prove it.
Remember, these beltings were there last year, 2 straight after the bye, just like the start to this season.

If sponsors and crowds drop off, he can kiss his career aspirations goodbye.

Tomorrow morning his message should be as simple as "E is for Effort"
That's all he wants, that's all we want.

I was hoping for some improvement but there was nothing there. It was almost a replica of our first game except that the opposition was better and Mackenzie struggled. Frost is in no man's land. He can't match the bigger players or keep up with the smalls. When you add in his disposal problems, it adds up to a mess. Sicily does not look like a captain. He just does his own thing, which is fine as far as it goes but it is not what captains do. Moore and Nash look to me like they are up to the role. Butler was a disappointment when he came on. The fumbling and dropped marks were awful - especially from our more experienced players. Kosi still can't kick straight, even on those rare occasions when he gets an opportunity.

I am presuming that Mitchell is working on our offensive game and the defensive side is stage two. We have further to go than I imagined.

We were completely dismantled by a quality side today. Our skills and connection are poor, so while we won more of it today, we had no ability to stand up to quality pressure. Then no ability to stop them on turnover. The effort was better but so was the opposition.

I’m going to reserve judgment until we have a bigger sample over the next month, against some probable bottom 4-6 teams in north, Gws and Adelaide.

Not good signs though. I’d argue almost every premiership team of the last 15+ years has had a defence first mentality. Our backs should be a strength but our inability / lack of system to slow the ball movement from up the ground is worrying. That’s effort and coaching a system.

I also reckon we aren’t tough enough or competitive enough across the board. Pretty soft actually, which is effort, attitude and personnel.

But let’s see what happens over the next month. Very small sample size so far and the swans were way too good.

Losing sucks, so I completely understand any passionate supporter being deflated by today's result. But we are very early into a rebuild which will take time to reap the rewards.

Cast your mind back to Round 13, 2005. An inexperienced Hawks team travelled to Adelaide to play against the reigning Premiers, Port Adelaide. That game turned into a serious Bully Beatdown. In the end we lost by 117 points, despite fielding 12 future premiership players.

There's a fair amount of young talent on our list, they will need to gain experience and develop synergy over time. Things are never as gloomy as they seem. Be patient.

S Bourgogne also played that game!

Best comment I've read so far.

I can’t agree with those saying there was no effort this week. Our midfield work was probably the least of our issues as we won centre breaks and tackles but our cohesion is just non existent at present

It’s the misfit ends of the footy field that were our major problem today. Simple basic skill errors that caused turnovers and subsequent goals

Field kicking and decision making very poor today. Sydney were well drilled and played to a plan. Hawks still seem to be working it out as they go. Sorry, Kosi is not doing enough to hold his spot, and not sure he ever will get there. Granted inside 50's is a massive concern because the ball comes straight back out, and there is not a lot of readymade replacements for Key positions. Bombing kicks, selfish play (I'm looking at you Chad even though didn't play today) and a lack of genuine effort from many. Not all doom and gloom (although can see plenty of beltings this year) Day, Worpel were ok, Meek is showing some good signs early. Lots of talk about O'Meara, Mitchell and Gunston. No matter what you do Coach will be roasted. Keep the oldies, 'you kept them too long and didn't allow the young players to develop'. Get rid of them/trade them and 'you've cut too much too quickly, and will have no upside'. Either way, what every HAwks supporter wants to see is genuine effort and early glimpses of a game plan that can win a lot of games.
