Autopsy Round 2, 2023: Sydney torch Hawthorn

I felt he was at his highest trade value last year. We probably would’ve got a top 10 pick for him. I hope I’m wrong but I think we have seen his ceiling already.
Disagree, I just think he has massive strengths, and massive weaknesses. We seem to play him in a role that exposes his weaknesses, and tempers his strengths.

He is not a good defender. But he is not a bad footballer.

DGB and Tyler Brockman who has not had a go for a couple of years both played well at Box Hill. With a backline having 4-5 players not playing that well, and a totally decimated forward line, as well as Ramsden/Long/Butler and others putting their hands up at Box Hill; we really need to give others a go for development.
Hawthorn hasn’t seen final action since 2015 and we need to get moving…

CJ a big worry. Was before he goes injured last year also.
Not defending well. Dropping marks and fumbling, turning it over and no real run and dash.
Needs to move up the ground or even forward. If not a run at box hill to get confidence back.

At least the effort was there today. Execution was horrible though.
Need to stay patient and look for positives and small wins.

Day, Moore, Meek, Amon, Worpel.

Even thought Greene was ok from horrible delivery and opportunities. He would normally kick 3/4 of those.

Box Hill winning is a huge positive and seeing our young players develop there is going to be a big part of the year.

Hope the confidence isn’t hit too bad and we set ourselves for next week. Need a win to straighten the ship and stay the course.

Do you think they had any coaching or plans implemented by whoever that spud coach that was sacked? Or do you think Clarko has come in and thrown away everything his predecessor put in place.

I appreciate they are ahead in terms of talent and experience. But we should be ahead in terms of our gameplan and structure, and it's absolutely glaringly obvious that we are not.
You've said a few times that you tipped North to finish above us , so you probably know why and dont need me to point out why they may be a little further progressed than a 1st year strip back rebuild.

Coaching wise we can go around in circles every game with the same discussion .
The reality is the core group of players need games together .

If we are here next season with no improvement well the coaching then becomes a viable discussion

Was to be expected. Rinse and repeat. All out attack -> turned over without scoring -> get punished on turnover. We can turn it around, just takes experience, I think we still need a new Gunston and a new McEvoy as forward targets to make it work. Reeves took some nice marks and goals before he got injured.

I will defend Mitchell.

He made the conscious decision to strip back our midfield and give the handful of top-end talent we do have the opportunity to develop together. But given the inexperience, it is very easy for structures to break down in that area.

The list decisions made by Clarkson and co from 2016 - 2020, combined with our Premiership years (wouldn't trade for anything), means we're spread thin on talent in other areas. So we're having to play some very average players.

Next year, with some additional talent and continuity in the midfield group, you'd hope to see some structural improvement. Better than what we're showing now. If we don't then some questions do need to be asked.

Don’t we have your second round pick for this up coming draft?

Yeah it was good trading on your part. Still, we got Weddle (who I rate) + we have an Academy player coming through that may have eaten through our second pick anyway.

We also have the Doggies second so a 1 spot downgrade not too bad - mind you they will finish higher.

If we finish bottom 4 next season I think our coach will be in serious trouble.

Depends on how we do it. If we're competitive most of the season and still finish bottom 4 I think he'll be fine.
Performances like these last two games for another year will put him in serious trouble.
Mind you, we haven't even played out the whole year yet. We could improve - I hope we do lol, it's hard to watch.

I agree they are ahead in their rebuild, that's not in dispute. They've had a few extra years and top picks over us. That's not the issue.

Do you believe that Clarkson is implementing anything that Rhys Shaw and David Noble had put in place from 2019 to date?

The obvious answer is no, he is not.

I understand completely that the gameplan is not going to be implemented overnight. But have you seen any semblance of a plan at all so far?

My main issue is the terrible positioning of our backline in particular. We are not playing in a grid and intercepting, nor are we marking our opponents.

Clarko has got something worked out where a first gamer, playing in an entirely new position, is being freed up and dominating, whilst not sacrificing defensively. We seem to have no plan in terms of both defending and also moving the ball out of the backline. Mitchell has had two preseasons and a full season of games to work on our defensive structure. What was our strength has become a glaring weakness.

I think we need to bring some experience in also even if it’s DFA like Simon Beaumont was for one season in 2004/05 or someone like Ricky Henderson of a few years ago also someone that has like a year or two left that could be a on field coach.

Not much to say about that but at least some effort was apparent at the start.

No system forward, falling apart in defense. Was a mess, but the Midfield battled well mostly.
I found some of these youngsters that have made it to the seniors maybe need to try a bit harder.
There is no game plan there, they kicked blindly and hoped, they couldn't hold a tackle or a mark at times,
Sydney played Box Hill it looked.

Sam has some work to do and some re arranging.

I know all the excuses about youngsters, but young fellows that get to this level have to be desperate to hold a spot , we looked unfortunately like a pack of chooks with no heads, no direction, and dare I say half heartedness.
Anyone remember a youngster named Carl Dietrich (R.I.P.) his first game he put the fear of god into his opponents, 17 years old. different era but same set up, young fellas , playing men.
Well our fellows need to gather some of that, they looked rather pathetic, I remember Clarkson keeping Zac Dawson playing the gorillas of centre half forwards or backmen never stopped trying, and there was another long skinny kid red haired got belted regularly, probably too skinny for AFL level and body weight, but inside had tons of guts.

Well kids start showing some of that lose by 200 points take risks and start following instruction , you got lost in the forest, today!
Disappointing , not the loss Sydney superior its the having a go that was missing. Its there but where, if we keep this up we will be losing every match!

Watched this on delay without sound, and haven’t read anything here or elsewhere.

My thoughts:

Backline:
Sis, Blanck and Dimma OK. Impey, CJ and Bramble not working. Thought Impey was the best of the three. CJ out of form and may need a spell.

Mids:
Best line. Finn least noticeable, but I think he played back in the second half. Meek better than Reeves. If we play one ruck / promote Rama, Reeves may get a spell.

Day was good; and Worpel and Nash showed a lot.

Forwardline:
Moore the best. CMac and Greene OK. I’d give Rama a run, play Butler again. I need to find a replay of the 2nd half of Box Hill, but Brockman maybe also in.

The Hawthorn season promotion of "BELIEVE" is getting harder and harder with massive losses and if seeing is believing then maybe we don't want to see any more. But, just like the armless and legless Mony Python Knight...maybe it is just a flesh wound ...yeah...nah!
Go hawks!
